I work in a fused glass studio. The Shimmering stuff is called irid. And be careful putting glue on top as it can leave a residue especially on certain colors

Just wanted to say I've watched a couple of videos today about fusing glass, but just browsed over them as they didn't catch my interest. However, i watched yours all the way through. Mostly because ur voice is soothing but also i appreciate the way u explain the process simply yet thoroughly, so thank you for that. This is actually the first time I've ever seen glass fusion. It's also the first I've seen someone using a microwave as a heat source for a kiln. I've used kilns for pottery but this is pretty wild tbh😂

The shimmery stuff is dichroic glass. You can buy it in a lot of different colors. I would recommend to use a glass cutter to cut of a piece of the dichroic. The there is less glass flying around

Hey Matt, for the timing on your microwave you don't have to do 6min then 2mins separately. Just press the top left button that says "time cook", then you can manually put in 8:00 minutes. You should also look into glass fuse molds that you can use inside the microwave kilns that come in different shapes and Amazon also carries little glass chips to put into these molds. If you have a glass scoring tool, that might help with making the shapes of glass you want, other then just breaking it with those chipping pliers.

I was researching into the microwave molds myself and had a very hard time finding ones that were for the microwave. Do you know a specific brand name by chance?

@@ronniebos6520 check out Yvonne Williams channel on KZfaq. She has a few tutorials on glass work in molds and puts them in a kiln. Most molds are made of plaster or ceramic so it should be safe to use in a microwave, plus it goes inside the kiln then inside the microwave.

What a great just in time video! I got one of those kilns on clearance, box was open... can you pls answer a few questions? Do you use a separate microwave, heard you cannot use in your food prep one after heating glass. Can you tell me wear to find pads, what they are called? Do you use heat protective gloves? I bought alot of clearance glass pkgs from Hobby Lobby and want to try this! Thanks again for sharing all your great videos!

I don't use glass anymore if I don't know its CEO. I use 90 just because that's what I started with. 90 and 96 are most common for glass fusing. You can fuse unknown glass if you only fuse it to pieces of the same glass, not to other glass from another source. I don't use gloves or anything. It takes my very weak microwave (700 watts) 8 minutes to fuse glass. Other microwaves you have to test it, starting at 5 1/2 minutes and then moving up to 6, 6 1/2 until it fuses the way you want. You should let it cool for 2 hours after each.fuse, even if it didn't fuse all the way. After 1 hr it's cool enough to move the kiln out of the microwave to a table top. After the 2nd hour it's safe to remove the piece but touch it first and make sure it's not too hot to the touch. Use kiln paper. The residue washes off in the sink.

Hi Nancy, there are lots of different instructions. The instructions that came with my kiln said that as long as you clean the microwave afterward you can use it for food, which is what I do. Also my instructions said to let cool in the kiln for 30 minutes outside of the microwave then take the top off, and place the top of the kiln to cool upside down on a heat resistance surface. And, also if you use dichroic glass (the fancy stuff) in a longer fuse there should be a piece of clear on top. This has worked well for me.

Can you fuse quartz?
@MattsCrazyArt
@MattsCrazyArt 3 жыл бұрын
I don't know the melting temperature of quartz but I imagine it is much higher than glass and I don't know how it would fuse - easily or with new crystal formation. So, not sure you could do it safely or effectively in a microwave kiln. But I'd imagine it's possible with the right tools.
