I install the Tram Browning 1191 Amateur Dual Band Glass Mount Antenna UHF 440-450 MHz and VHF 144-148 MHz PL-259 for Icom HYT Vertex Mobiles two way radio antenna
VHF 144-148 MHz 2.5 dBd gain
UHF 440-450 MHz 4.5 dBd gain
Max power 50 Watts
VSWR less than 1.5:1
28 1/2" Height
Easy installation. I chose this for my vehicle has glass. I used it in the "out of the box" condition and experienced poor performance. To properly use this antenna you will have to sweep it to check SWR. I used a MFJ-226 and was able to see the SWR change in real time as I adjusted the small screw. I was able to get the antenna down to 1.24, but when I added the clip for a ground plane it dropped all the way down to 1.19. Again simple to trim if you have the proper tools. The SWR at 144.100mhz was 1.45 and at 148.000mhz it was 1.50. It fell to 1.19 at 146.675mhz. I had a hard time trying to figure out the way to use the ground plane. I found it to be effective if you tighten the fitting on the hook to keep it in place. Look at the pictures. When you use the ground clip, be sure it is perpendicular to your whip.

Thanks for the video. I just installed my antenna "same model" today. It installed with no problem and used RTV silicone sealer as well. I used a Nano VNA to tune the antenna and got the SWR down to 1.23:1 on 2mtr and 1.3:1 on 440. Not bad at all! My car is made of a lot of plastic and glass top for sun roof so I did not have many antennas to choose from but this glass mount "same model" worked great and fit my needs. I am going to put on some ferrite beads at the antenna end of the coax. If I move the coax a lot then the SWR will change. Installing some beads should cure that problem. Thanks WB9KQF

For many years I used the Larsen dual band glass antenna - I had about 4 or 5 of them over the years. That is a great antenna - low SWR and performed just as well as conventional dual band antennas. My most memorable QSO with the Larsen glass antenna, was driving on a highway in South Africa, and working an American astronaut on one of the space shuttles in the mid 1990's. We had a long QSO which lasted for their entire pass overhead. EDIT: Oh, only downside, was at a certain speed the antenna would whistle. To rectify that I put a really small weight on the tip of the antenna to stop it from vibrating and resonating at an audible frequency

Good video I guess. It would have been helpful to talk a little bit more about what you were “turning” when trying to tune the antenna. Hints and tricks to how/what you were doing. Were you turning a knob, the entire box? If it was the box, what steps did you take to make sure it wasn’t stuck fast to the window as you were making your adjustments? What EXACTLY were you doing? Be careful about making assumptions when creating content like this. I got some info I was looking for, but came away with additional questions. -73 KG5YMD

the best antenna Ive used for 2m-70cm was a larson nmo(short 19" tall version) on the roof of my crew cab truck. It was scary drilling a hole through the roof, I cant bring myself to do it on my new vehicle so use a mag mount....I dont use vhf-uhf enough to justify a permanent vehicle install ......if I were to do another semi permanent install it would be a front fender, about the same location you would expect to see the car radio antenna installed at

I am just curious as to why you mounted it in the center of that window?
@hamradiocq
@hamradiocq 3 жыл бұрын
Good question. That window is pretty useless anyway, it's tiny hard to see out of. I am going to put the battery in the back passenger side floor board. So all the cables will be right there. I have no idea how to get to the firewall to the car battery and I don't wanna mess with it, so I'll have an onboard battery for now. There is a child seat there anyway so there'll be no feet in the back.

Get the tyt th 9800. It's a quad band radio and you can listen in on CB with it. So all you will need is one radio for everything

So, forgive a stupid question; but what's the purpose of the bar? A counterpoise of sorts, like a rat-tail? I might try this on my S-10 truck.
@hamradiocq
@hamradiocq 3 жыл бұрын
I would guess a counterpoise. Actually a good question. Read the comments on here, some people said it's a bad antenna?

To remove the residue from 100% silicone, try rubbing alcohol next time. Much quicker and easier clean up. For acrylic caulk, water works fine, though.

Hey bud, heard you on the EARS repeater a few minutes ago. I'm in Edmond west of 35 near the K5EOK repeater. I'm having the same problem of having to find a way through the firewall on my '15 Honda Pilot. Hope to QSO sometime. 73 KG5JZQ

Hey Rob that's awesome that you heard me. I'm going to be publishing that video within 2 hours, it's building now. Find a grommet opening and put a big screwdriver thru it...or next time your car is in the shop ask them to get the wire thru. It's a tough problem.

What would be a problem to look out for?
@KX4UL
@KX4UL 3 жыл бұрын
@@hamradiocq - The problem is that the signal is desensitized passing through the glass. So, really there is nothing you can look out for other than making sure that the inside and outside mounts are aligned and square. Most agree that these type of antennas are a last resort to not drill holes in your automobile or run coax through the door seals or firewall. If they perform well enough for your needs then no worries.

I have no idea how to get thru the firewall of that car. It's been my nemesis for my whole life. I think I'll just bring in a battery and sit it in the floorboard behind the passenger seat. Maybe I'll find a mechanic someday to help me get there.

GMRS is a fun start, but look at also getting your Ham ticket, very easy with minimal study, for lots more mobile capability and beyond. My Tram thru (on) glass antenna has held up and performed well for several years, although a mag mount whip is much better for challenging terrain and distances. Agreed on the tidy install, although I'm glad I put mine on the driver side for easy checking that the antenna remains tight.
