I like that he's canonically bad at clue and among us. It's refreshing to see a brilliant detective be bad at things rather than the typical sherlock who is amazing at everything. It makes him feel more like a real person than someone the filmmakers write in.

Craig had already proved himself as a diverse character actor pre-Bond ('The Jacket,' 'Some Voices,' 'Road to Perdition,' 'Munich') and also as a leading man ('Enduring Love,' 'Layer Cake,' 'Sylvia') but I do enjoy watching him as Benoit Blanc fresh off his run as Bond, it's definitely one of his best characters and it helps that he has some great material to work with - looking forward to the 3rd movie in 2024!

I feel the reason Knives Out (and seemingly Glass Onion too) hit different to the new Poirot movies is that not only are they completely original, but they are also very modern. Both in the time they are set in and the style. Lots of snappy dialogue, lots of jokes but still managing to keep the tension. Rian Johnson doesn't just bring back the murder mystery, he modernises it while staying true to its escence.

Poirot have that amazing series with David Suchet that is incredible and one of the best detective series and adaptations of a book of all time. Ironic because Ryan seemed to think he was on to something profound in this movie. The message and the themes were so heavy handed it kneecapped the story. Instead of characters we’re given 2 dimensional cutouts (billionaire tech mogul, misogynistic podcaster, ditsy fashion designer) no more deep than “Colonel Mustard.” None of these references to modern culture elevated the genre. And Craig’s southern accent is distractingly unnatural. I enjoyed the first Knives Out but I don’t understand the praise being heaped on this movie. No one I watched this with enjoyed it either. Makes me feel like I’m living in an alternate reality
@kylebookout1789
@kylebookout1789 Жыл бұрын
@@jabrokneetoeknee6448 I understand those criticisms. There's definitely a certain level of fantasy to it all. The whole thing requires a lot of willful suspension of disbelief to work. It's not meant to be realistic but entertaining clever fun. The clear and sometimes very obvious points of reference or allusions to real world stereotypes or people is just icing on the cake. I see it as likely intentional that everyone is so simple and outwardly unlikeable. Benoit Blanc pretty much said so. It seems deep and layered but it's not. That seems to be an inherent flaw in a lot of meta narratives. Is commenting on the trope or outright subverting it as good as actually doing something new? It is even possible to make something completely original? I wish the movie worked more for you. I don't think your living in an alternate reality you just didn't like it. Which is totally fine. Great even. It makes discussions about the film better!

In a way I disagree, I feel like see how they run was so bad, that we’re almost going to have an over saturation of murder mystery films, if we’re not already there. It’s likely not going to go the way of the vampire film or certainly not the superhero film, but I do think it would be far more satisfying to have one great murder mystery franchise, like knives out, than to have like 3 a year come out and hopefully one of them them is decent.

I cant believe people don't see through this Glass Onion bs; It's just another corporate Netflix movie that profits off of a better property. It's hard to believe Glass Onion was made by the same person as Knives Out. Knives Out was so well written, acted, and filmed. Why does every shot in Glass Onion look flat, bland, and/or overexposed, and lack the gorgeous lighting of Knives Out? Why does Edward Norton's house look like an ugly jumbled mess, unlike the beautiful home in the original? Are we supposed to believe that these characters are old friends and colleagues? Where is their chemistry? A lot of the scenes between Ed Norton, Blanc and the rest of the cast feel so awkward, almost like they're improvised, and its definitely not intentional because they're trying to be funny. Why are there so many cringeworthy jokes that try to be current or covid-related? Detective Blanc is introduced while playing Among Us in a bath tub with Kareem Abdul Jabbar, and for some reason that isn't the only dumb celebrity athlete cameo in this film. Ugh. I hated everything with the Dave Bautista Andrew Tate character, the politician character, and the Kate Hudson as the whiny screeching neolib. Jesus christ they were so annoying and pointless. I consider myself pretty leftist but all of the "woke" commentary in Glass Onion was so hamfisted, unfunny, and cringy, yuck! I did not feel "inferior" while watching this, Chris 3:35. No, this sucked and ruined my day, I felt hopeless. Let's raise our standards guys. Other dumb things in Glass Onion include: -The unfunny hourly gong joke -The incredibly stupid Mona Lisa through-line -Blanc's striped bathing suit -The renewable energy macguffin (sigh) -Every single time they cut back to old dialogue because they think the audience is too dumb to remember

I love mysteries and who-dun-its. The first movie was terrific. Such a breath of fresh air. I think the reason I loved it so much is because it had a giant cast of big name actors...and it actually worked! It feels like many times when there's such a large list of prominent actors there are some that are forgotten about because there's only so much screen time to go around and finding balance is hard. There are plenty of times when it works in animated movies where they're voice overs, but live action is more difficult. 'Knives Out' absolutely blew it out of the water with how everyone was. Every character was essential and played their part. It was one of the most enjoyable movies I've seen in the last few years. I'm thrilled that 'Glass Onion' seems to go the same route because I already know I'm going to love it. A great ensemble, great setting, and great/clever story telling is always a winning combination in my book. Sadly I'll have to wait to see it on Netflix because the next few weeks that it'll be at my theater happens to be extremely busy for me, but I hope it makes a ton of money at the box office. I did not like what Rian Johnson did with Star Wars -- at all -- but I also think if he was able to do the entire trilogy from start to finish then it would have been better too.

After The Last Jedi it proves that Johnson needs to stay away from Star Wars. When it comes to original films and Knives Out he can do good though. I enjoyed this murder mystery which is as entertaining as the first. This movie was awful imo. It thinks it is smarter than it is. I don’t understand why people think it’s great. It wasn’t clever. It wasn’t smart. It actually was very stupid. It was a “detective” movie that tells you everything and gives you nothing to figure out as if you are a child. It thinks it’s audience is dumb. And then she holds up the piece of evidence, the napkin, that the villain needs right in front of him and he is somehow able to completely light the evidence on fire before she reacts. Just completely stupid. Waste of time. And I loved the first movie.

I’m in the minority here, but I really didn’t like this film. I felt that it went way too long and the payoff felt really cheap. Spoilers: When it is revealed that she is the twin sister, I felt that the rehashing of previously seen scenes was really boring. Chris says that it would be better on rewatch, but I argue it would be worse. If you watch the film knowing she is a twin, then the extremely long rehash would get really boring really quick. Again, I know I’m in the minority but I really didn’t like it. Other critiques: when the killer was revealed, I thought there was going to be another twist because I felt it was so obvious throughout the film. Also, I found that destroying the Mona Lisa as the big payoff was really predictable, but also it was kinda dumd to “stick it” to the rich man by destroying the most famous painting ever. (Also, France would never publicly admit that the Mona Lisa was destroyed, so I don’t even know if the payoff worked)

Just watched it, and I agree with you. Also, having the other characters change their mind about testifying against Edward Norton just by smashing things felt very contrived, and doesn't change the fact that they still don't have any material evidence against him. As revenge it's crap, because he can just buy replacements for everything except the Mona Lisa, which destroying it is also just a crime against art in general, and not "the rich". Also, the whole "business plan on a napkin thing" is such a nonsense literal regurgitation of a cliche. You can't outline a business on a napkin. That's never happened. It's just a hack silicon valley myth.

Did we watch the same movie? I thought it was boring and a total waste of such an amazing cast. Was there some deeper meaning that moved the Cosmos and somehow I missed it? Even the brilliant actor, Edward Norton, could not fix this stinker. There were a couple good laughs, early on, and one belly laugh when a certain someone opens the door for a cameo appearance. (No spoiler here) Those few funny bits could lure you in, for a moment, and then it went into a black hole from there.

I know you said you don't want to do negative reviews anymore because you're in filmmaking, but over praising a film doesn't help anything. There is no way on this planet this movie is better than, or even on the same level, as the original. The first one was a true whodunnit with characters we could get invested in. Unpopular opinion; I kinda thought this movie was so bad, realized by the mid point that ***Spoilers ahead I guess*** Nortons character whatever his name was the killer, it clearly shown he changes the glasses, takes the gun from Drax and takes the cellphone and you can see it in his pocket? Idk like maybe I’m being to nitpicky or I was really watching, but it was so tedious and cheesy at the end, don’t get me wrong, I really liked Knives Out, but in this one, like all the characters are mid at best, a TWIN SISTER plot?! Yikes. Jen Henwicks character (Peg) the movie without her pans out exactly the same, but I thought that was stoner beach guys character. I don’t hate Rian Johnson (liked SW TLJ, liked Looper) but this one felt really weird for me, I’m not trying to hate, but since everyone seems to be praising this movie just seeing if anyone else had that same feeling about this move I did watching it, dragging and boring and I just wanted it to end but it just kept going and then the explosion and the car at the end please tell me I’m not alone someone out there

Another dumb thing, why accepting to receive Benoît Blanc at all, if he plan to murder Duke. Or why Benoît Blanc though there were no evidence to look for after the towel got burned. Why not looking for the gun used to attempt murdering Helen? He can be convicted for about 3 murder, Helen's included. By the way why keeping the towel, and not just destroy it? You must have a very different definition of immaculate than everyone else if you thought the writing in that movie was immaculate… Like, forget about all the Star Wars stuff- the lore and all that- and just focus on what the middle part of a trilogy should accomplish and how it should function in the overarching story. The middle, at the very least, should set up the final part. It should expand on what was setup in the first part and then introduce the big conflict that propels the audience into the final act. With The Last Jedi, however, Rian Johnson made the bizarre decision to literally _and_ figuratively throw away 98% of what was set up by The Force Awakens while not introducing any new conflicts and then pretty much ends the movie as if it was the end of the trilogy. It’s one of the greatest examples of bad writing.

I can’t wait to see this one. The trailer reminds me of one of my old favorites: The Last of Sheila. Rian Johnson said it was his inspiration for Glass Onion. It is a puzzle of a mystery written by Stephen Sondheim and Anthony Perkins with an all-star cast. A group of Hollywood folks are invited for a weekend on the yacht of a famous director to play murder mystery games. Clues are everywhere, hidden in plain sight. Even the title has multiple layers. If you haven’t seen it, it is well worth a look.

I saw this at the SCAD film festival, and adored it. The location really benefited from the big screen. Also, Benoit Blanc is a larger than life character who needs to be seen larger than life.😁
