Glassy-Water Seaplane Landing Surprises Passenger

Landing a seaplane on extremely smooth water--"glassy-water"--is risky because it's almost impossible to tell how high you are. Look down and see the sky!
The standard procedure is to descend at about 100 feet per minute and continue flying until you see spray. The worst thing you can do is to think you can flare and land. That's almost certain to send you swimming.
This glassy-water landing was in a SeaRey flying boat amphibious seaplane.
For an example of how not to do a glassy-water landing, watch this video made during the shooting of a movie: • Floatplane accident
The floatplane accident is discussed in this Wikipedia entry: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mother_L...)

I am so thankful to have spent my childhood around seaplanes. Houma Louisiana 1960- 69. It was wonderful flying with my Dad. I remember him saying how much he enjoyed making landings so smooth you have to look out the window to see if you've landed.

Houma, home of Corkey Fournof and his Bearcat. I may have misspelled his last name.

In according with the flight instruction, the pilot of the AN-2 (in the amphibian version) had to carry 8-10 dry birch brooms for use with glassy-water))) very cheap and practical

Maybe make a test approach, kick the passenger out the door to create some ripples then go around and do it the easy way! ;-)

Nice! Landing a little closer to a shoreline (if you can) on your left (or less ideally, your right) helps with altitude perception too.

You could if you were sure it was set to indicate the air pressure exactly--and if you knew the elevation of the water. Or if you had landed on that water and had set the altimeter to read zero there, you could then take off and rely on it to tell you within a few feet when you were close to the water again. You'd be doing an instrument landing. Even then, the last few feet would be guesswork. So I think you'd be better off doing a standard glassy-water approach and landing.

Do not hunt for surface. Needs a bit more power just crossing over shore. NEVER hunt, never hunt, never hunt. If you run out of lake in small places go around.

Quick question. .. should we hunt for surface?

With that much shoreline what is the problem, just get below the tree line and slow descent until it touches. As for the title you don't know how high you are except you are below the tree line. I have done hundreds of these not a big deal.

That is the gear system - don't want to land with the gear down on the water.

It's the ACI Searey Gear Alert system, making me check the position of the landing gear and then double-checking my response. It makes an even better check about 45 seconds after takeoff and reminds me to raise the landing gear if I haven't done so already. That's probably its best feature, because you can't land on water with the wheels down when they're up. (You can land a Searey safely on land with the wheels up. On grass there's no damage; on pavement you'll probably have to patch the hull, but can still put the wheels down and fly away.)

Pilots are so technically proficient and yet can't figure out how to make the audio come out left and right channels.. ugh

Oh, I know! The problem always has been getting both the intercom audio and the ambient sounds into the GoPro, which doesn't really like to be treated that way. And it's all the more complicated when the audio source is monaural or when there's more than one audio track or the audio and the video are from different sources. Or when there are two mono tracks, one on each stereo "'side." It's a little better in the more recent videos--but this one might give you an idea of the difficulties: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jqpifL2DzsfFmJs.html
