This tutorial demonstration video covers the basics of glazing through pouring, dipping, and brushing. For bulb syring slip trailing use, see my other videos on "Glazing the Slab Plates", and "Glazing the Slab Platters".
I was in a hurry to get the video completed one afternoon and posted by the next morning for my students to view for a snowday assignment, that's why I don't show the finished glaze results. I will attempt to show finished results in another future video.
Follow my Amazon Influencer Storefront for my recommendations of tools, and ceramic studio supplies! www.amazon.com/shop/karanspot...
The glazes in this video are Coyote brand glazes- cone 6, although I have many other glazes in the classroom.
For samples of some finished glazed pieces, see this video link: • Finished Fired Glaze S...
Sorry, I couldn't provide finished examples within this video, as I was making it one day after school, and had to have it posted by midnight that night for my students to watch for a snow day activity the next day!
I am a high school ceramics teacher and potter. I have been working in clay for over 30 years, and I have been teaching for over 28 years, the past 20 have been specifically teaching high school ceramics. I love what I do! I have my own studio in my home basement, where I work on my personal pottery for my Etsy site; www.etsy.com/shop/KaransPotsA...
I started my KZfaq channel a few years ago, to make videos to help my students if they are absent and miss a demo, or if they would like to explore more advanced techniques independently. I have been amazed to reach such a wider audience than my own students!

Hi Jared- sorry for the delay- I just saw this message! I only have pinholing occasionally on a few glazes. Rootbeer, peacock, and a few of the other celadons may have this tenancy more than others. I try to fire slowly, and I hold the final temperature in a 25 min hold to help prevent it. If it does happen, I just put a complimentary glaze over it and refire! :)

@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass 8 жыл бұрын
+omfato ana No, you must fire glaze in a kiln, as it has to reach about 2000 degrees F. An oven couldn't get hot enough to melt glaze. And, the reason for glaze, is that it seals the surface of the claybody, making it water proof and food safe! :-)

Hi am try to know every thing of ceramic why always not glaze the down edg of cup???
@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass 8 жыл бұрын
+omfato ana Good question, Omfato! Glaze will melt and liquefy during a glaze firing. It will also fuse to whatever it touches during the firing. If we glazed the bottom edge of any pot, the glaze would fuse (glue itself) to the kiln shelf! We usually just sponge away glaze, but you can also use wax resist if you are dipping in a glaze to help wipe it off more easily! I hope that helps! :-)

Thanks. After you fire a glazed piece can you re-glaze and fire?
@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is possible to fire again- I normally will slow down an additional firing however, since the clay is already vitrified, it is good to take it slowly to reduce stresses! :). Luster firings are a third firing on top of fired glazes.

@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass 5 жыл бұрын
Many people do once Fire pottery. I prefer to bisque fire first so I get less pinholing and more gassing off of the clay during bisque. Plus I prefer the dryness and durability of bisque when I glaze. It’s really a personal preference.

It’s possible to do a once fire technique without bisque firing- on some glazes- as long as the piece is bone dry before firing. You’d need to test your glazes to determine if they’re suitable for that!

When you cover your walls with some material... it called paint and it can buy paint at Home centers etc..., when you cover your pottery, what do you call that material? Glaze or what? Where can you get them? About five gallons sized, wonder how much it cost? Thank you for your kindly respond.
@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is glaze! If you look in the video description, I provide some links to some of my favorite products you can check out. Glazes will vary in price due to kind of glaze. A gallon can cost anywhere between $30 and $100 depending on the type. Some dry materials are much more expensive than others to use to manufacture glazes.

this is useful information, but if you dip your pot more than once (to cover the handle), the consistency may be altered depending on the glaze.

I thought Wax was used to keep glaze off an area where it's been painted on..
@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass 10 жыл бұрын
Hi Kendra- Wax is typically used on bare clay on a foot or base to keep glaze off an area when dipping. The foot/base area will need to be sponged after the glaze is dipped, to make sure any residue of glaze is removed. Wax can be placed on top of a glaze as well, if for instance, you want to brush a contrasting color over a waxed shape on a base color... the base color can then show through in the waxed shape- much like the batik approach on fabric. I hope that might make sense to you... just let me know if I didn't address your comment enough! :-)

Stilts are wonderful and work well in many applications! Unfortunately, I am firing projects for 175+ students on a regular basis! I just don't have the quantity of stilts nor the time needed to securely stilt all of them! So, that is why I teach my students the methods in the video of cleaning the bottoms! :-) On average, I fire probably 2000- 2500 pieces every semester! :-) (TWICE! Bisque and Glaze!)

Don't walk around with the glaze dripping?
@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass 10 жыл бұрын
Hi Vince- If you are wondering why I told my kids not to walk around with the glaze dripping- it is because if I don't caution them to just hold it over the bucket for a few seconds, they just immediately start walking around the room, dripping glaze all over. It is easier to tell them to stay put then to constantly mop it!
