I need a good use for mushrooms that grow in the yard. I'm not confident enough to eat them, so I'd like to use them in artistic way. This was my first try and the results were underwhelming.

Love these experiments even if they don’t give any concrete results.

Keep the ideas coming. You will surely invent something spectacular if you work at it long enough.

I just love these experiments! I would definitely do them if I had a kiln, but now I don’t need to! 😅

I see people experimenting with all kinds of stuff for raku firings, but it seems like a lot of stuff would just burn off and leave almost no trace?

Its an edible mushroom btw, but Chlorophyllum rhacodes does have a toxic look-a-like called The Vomiter.. Chlorophyllum molybdites that will stain greenish instead of brown.

Pour over liquid nitrogen and freeze it hard quickly, then use it as a stamp. Or maybe try and make a mold of it... I don't know.

I'm surprised it didn't completely vaporize. Keep experimenting!

I'm sure glad you weren't going to eat it, because I don't think it's an edible one. Bummer about the experiment, but it was fun to try.

Try dipping the mushroom in a glaze and stamping the glaze on the bowl.

Hmm maybe the play here would be to make a spore print on the ceramic

I think the problem with mushrooms is that they are as much as 92% water which doesn't leave much left when it all evaporates. If you had a way to freeze dry the mushroom you might be able to keep the shape of the mushroom, but I would think that it would crumble instantly under any pressure if you were to use it as a stamp, but it shouldn't shrink anymore in the kiln. If there's any way at all possible to use a freeze dried mushroom and fill the gills with your pigments, place the bowl on top of the mushroom and invert them together so that the gills are in direct contact with the bowl, you might have a shot. That doesn't seem like an easy feat though

I wish I had Chlorophyllum rhacodes growing in my garden.

Hey Justin, I have a request. I've seen people bisque firing certain rocks, turning it into powder and using it to make glazes. Would you be able to run an experiment like this?
@JustinsMakery2 жыл бұрын
I've heard of that too. John Britt had a couple like that. I'll add it to my list! Thanks for the suggestion.
