I know Glee isn’t accurate but what kind of teachers/casting directors sit there and laugh through an actor’s audition like that?? And Rachel was super unprofessional too -_- I know I’m being nitpicky but as a drama student this really pisses me off because no teachers would be allowed to do that, and no actors would be allowed to be unprofessional like Rachel was. To add, Kurt fucking nailed Shakespeare - it’s not easy to memorise entire passages of Shakespeare, let alone knock it out of the park like he did!

@@kristie9582 I definitely blame Beiste, Emma, and Artie for Rachel breaking character and laughing when Kurt was going in for the kiss. She was getting a bit nervous while they kept laughing (very inappropriately) and some people can’t help but laugh when a bunch of other people are laughing. Rachel might just be one of those people. But the three directors were being really annoying laughing at this *teenager* trying to obviously work something out internally on stage to present himself differently on the outside. Very rude, immature and inappropriate. They all know what Kurt goes through there at that high school everyday. I agree with you though! I think he did great with R & J. Male actors back then were a bit more delicate and refined ❤️ he crushed it and actually so did Rachel ☺️☺️

I maybe agree that Kurt isn’t the PERFECT Tony, but when he shows them such an amazing performance, laughing like that is a rude thing and not matured. I maybe excepted Artie for more, cuz although he’s a teen I always found him more mature (apparently not, and it probably means he isn’t mature enough to direct a play), but come on, Coach Beiste and Emma? What an example does she give to the kids? Frankly, I never really understood why she was the school’s counselor. It always seemed like she didn’t have anything to do in her life and wasn’t good and confident enough to be anything else, so she became this. Also she married Mr Shue so that's gotta say something about her judgemental skills. Never liked her

The show's treatment of the adult characters was the same than that of the younger characters. Will being extremely close to his students (e.g. asking them to perform at his wedding and helping him proposing to the guidance counselor) never disturbs anyone (appart from Sue, who was definitely right on this one). No surprise Beiste and Emma laugh at a 17 year-old when they're treated like 17 year-olds.
@sarahlelys9268
@sarahlelys9268 3 жыл бұрын
The one that shocked me most (besides Artie) was Coach Beiste. She knows what it's like. (At that point of the series, it was not canon that the character was actually a man named Sheldon Beiste -- so in the mind of the writers and of the actress, Beiste was a woman.) Coach Beiste knew what it is to be gender non-conforming. She knows what it is to suffer because you're a woman and people think you're a man and make fun of you for it and only see your masculinity and don't take you seriously (in a sport, for example). It was exactly the same with Kurt except that the gender were reversed. How is that different for Beiste to be laughed at because she's a masculine-looking woman, and for Kurt because to be laughed at because he's effeminate and tries to conform to a traditional vision of masculinity? How is that different from Coach Beiste wanting to be accepted as both a woman and a sports coach? Coach Beiste knows exactly what it's like. In this scene, she is the one who was out-of-character for laughing.

One thing I didn't get was...why not just cast Kurt as Baby John? He's in more scenes than Officer Krupke, he has more speaking lines than Officer Krupke, and Kurt would be perfect for the role - a young baby-faced boy always trying to act like a big tough man while really being scared and vulnerable, desperately trying to fit in with the gang. Kurt would break hearts if he were Baby John, and like I said, I think he'd like the role better because this way he'd have more lines and more scenes.....

@@sweetcheeses I know that, I wasn't questioning his audition, I was questioning the casting of him as Krupke (both in the show and by the show writers). I mean - Krupke is in four scenes, and he only has speaking lines in two of them (after the opening fight, and before Gee Officer Krupke - his non-speaking lines are at the dance and in the final scene when everyone's on stage).
@agenttheater5
@agenttheater5 5 ай бұрын
@@mistressofthewicket I know, I don't get why the people who wrote this episode missed out on a golden opportunity of seeing Kurt play a role that was perfect for him and would've won Ove rate hearts of the audience in spite of not getting the lead. If nothing else, then I don't get why Blaine would say that "your officer krupke brought down he house" unless he was trying to be nice and just messed it up - Krupke isn't supposed to bring down the house, plus in the four scenes he's in he has only a few speaking lines in two of them, Krupke's superior Lieutenant Shrank has more speaking lines. Besides - there's a whole song dedicated to mocking Officer Krupke (ok not really, Gee Officer Krupke is basically a song about buckpassing but still), is it really fair to have the footballers who bully him mock him in another way? Not that we even got that song in this show though (the only musical Glee covered that didn't have it's own album, in fact they may have used the fewest songs from the musical in all their musical covers (7 out of 11, not including dance numbers, gotta say it was a little disappointing)).

If the Tony you saw looked and sounded like Kurt during his performance, then he was miscast. An effeminate man will always be wrong for Tony, who is supposed to be masculine and the co-founder of a violent gang. The guy in the 1961 classic film was miscast, as well. Here's hoping that Ansel Elgort will finally do the role justice in the upcoming Spielberg remake.

Gotta say I am questioning the costumes since this was supposed to be after Romeo and Juliet's wedding night, but I know it's a high school so there'd be rules about what they'd wear - though apparently not for mr Shue and Sam when they as good as shamed Marley for not wanting to wear a costume she wasn't comfortable in, and accused her (when she was still basically in recovery from an eating disorder) of putting herself ahead of the team - but they should've been able to find something that looked like they'd both come from bed and fit in with dress requirements, ie a nightgown and a shirt and pants, without the hat and the hair-do.

Lea Michele is surprisingly good here, playing two characters in one, and with her final lines to Kurt before and after he runs off. It's a good, nuanced performance. (Chris Colfer is always great of course.) The audition panel are amazingly dumb. I'd have expected better from Artie at least.

@@thekitkatlizard8661 Fair point. :-D But I thought, the teachers on Glee are often remarkably juvenile, so that someone like Artie can look like the adult in the room. And Artie should at least have some empathy with otherness and alternative ways of seeing/doing things.

I feel bad for Kurt because he was always way too feminine for roles like Tony but it must suck being laughed at when you're trying your best especially by your teachers of all people.

Of all the roles, why would you chose Romeo to prove you can play a manly man? The tights alone hurt the point you're trying to make.

@@bellaknightR597 Umm yeah, I know that. That still doesn't explain why he chose Romeo to portray manliness. After all, he had already auditioned for the part. This audtiion was specifically meant to showcase he could portray a masculine man. For which, I insist, Romeo is a terrible choice.
@bellaknightR597
@bellaknightR597 Жыл бұрын
@@tbbcch1039 really, Romeo fought with swords and killed a man, I'll admit the outfit wasn't the best choice, but being Romeo is way better then trying to be some sort stereotype of masculinity where you (apparently) don't have feelings because that isn't Tony either, both he and Rome have more in common than you think, they can both be tough and sensitive depending on the situation
@tbbcch1039
@tbbcch1039 Жыл бұрын
@@bellaknightR597 Romeo fighitng with swords and killing is completely irrelevant when he does neither in the scene Kurt chose. " but being Romeo is way better then trying to be some sort stereotype of masculinity ..." Maybe? But who said those were the only two choices? "Romeo have more in common than you think" I literally didn't say ANYTHING about them not having stuff in common. Literally all that I said was that, if you're trying to change the minds of people who already think you can't play a masculine role, then Romeo is a bad choice. That's all. I didn't say Romeo has zero masculinity nor that Tony has no sensitivity nor that auditioning as Romeo for Tony can't be a smart choice in another context.
