From February 1988, Glen Campbell sings "I Remember You". This was Glen's last appearance on the Carson show. Leno was filling in for Carson, who had a very bad cold & fever. "I Remember You" is on Glen's 1987 album "Still Within the Sound of My Voice", available at finer retailers everywhere!

Glen was my hero. Saw him in concert just before he retired. He was signing autographs in the hall and he tried to hand me a pen he thought was mine and I just stood there and stared at him. I was frozen. I learned the "Nashville" style of guitar picking from watching him on TV. Even after he was mentally declining, he could still play great!

He was one of the most talented entertainers of the past 100 years. He was an elite guitarist, excellent vocalist, naturally funny. He could have focused on acting and been one of the best leading men. But his strength was as a musician. I was a big fan from the time I was a kid and he had his TV show and along with multiple hit records he was one of the biggest names in Show Business. I didn't know anything about all of his work with the Wrecking Crew or his stint as a Beach Boy prior to his personal mega success. No one outside of show business knew any of that until the 1990's. I was at one of his last concerts in Manistee, MI. He was having some trouble but not while he was singing and playing. It was like his God Given Talent was bypassing his physical limitations. RIP Glen.

Having never seen this I was really quite surprised by everything: the song choice, the straightforward arrangement and rendition and the Telecaster. I’ve always had a soft spot for the song, which years ago I sang in (what else?) a wedding band. But I never even came close to yodeling.

+gritsnsand Finally, I'm not the only one who catches lyric discrepancies! In spite of flubbing the lyrics, I do enjoy Glen's performance of this wonderful song. Loved the insertion of the guitar and piano solos. Here's one lyric discrepancy that really bothered me. I was sitting there completely mesmerized by his performance and then BAM! He got the lyrics wrong. As I view the vid, it almost seems to me that he realized it right when it happened and had the presence of mind to recover. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qranmbOHuZi4qYE.html

@@Squee_Dow I’m going to go out on a limb and say that Glen didn’t screw up the lyrics. The way you described it, “lyric discrepancies,” says it well, in my opinion. Or simply, Glen just made it his own. If you listen to his other performances of this song, you’ll see that he sings the lyrics this same way every time. There are several live performances of it, and it’s also on the album “Still Within the Sound of My Voice.” I think that he must have liked the way it sounded when he tweaked the lyrics and made those little changes. So I really think this way was “on purpose,” and not a matter of forgetting the lyrics. I’ve seen you comment on Glen’s videos before, so I know you’re a great fan of Glen. Me too! I can watch his performances over and over and never get tired of them. Another note about this song: in the documentary I’ll Be Me about his life, there was a scene in the doctor’s office as he was receiving a treatment, or maybe just after. I only saw the film once so I don’t remember it perfectly, but he started either singing or speaking the lyrics to this song, the part in the middle where it goes “I remember too a distant bell and stars that fell like the rain out of the blue.” He had trouble recalling some of it and Kim helped him with the words. A sweet moment. I wasn’t at all familiar with the song before that, and the line felt odd to me since the rhyme came early in the line (bell, fell), and it didn’t rhyme at the end of the line. I could see why it was tricky to get it it right. It was around that time that I started watching every performance of his that I could find, and became familiar with several of his versions of this song. Sorry this is so long!

So sad what Alzheimer's takes from people. Glen's family was very courageous to let the world know about him having the disease. I lost my mom to it as well. So hearing him singing about remembering is so bittersweet. I'm just grateful that the person who has the disease has no recollection of things they did or said when it was so severe that they had no idea what they were doing or saying. My mom would have been mortified at things she did.

My guitar virtuoso hero, Glen Campbell copied to a 'T' Frank Ifield's million-selling rendition - knowing how it introduced my 'boomer' generation to I REMEMBER YOU: The same walking tempo, as well as the single-note yodels (upward sliding major 5ths) on each “YOU.” Glen Campbell -- entertainer that he was - knew how evocative this arrangement was, for millions of viewers who were watching 'The Tonight Show' that February night in 1988; Glen is introduced by a very young Jay Leno, guest-hosting for Johnny who was out with a “bad cold”). I remember watching this appearance, and loving the artless virtuoso picking - by one of the greatest 'sessions' musicians who ever lived. This night he played a cream-colored Telecaster (Leo Fender's very first electric guitar model from the late 1940s). Yes, to millions who were raised at some distance from the 'Great American Songbook' this was exactly like the ONLY version they'd ever heard! To judge from comments below the video, Glen Campbell's performance endeared this song to a new sub-generation of TV viewers. Thanks for sharing, BreauTube.
