Economist and public intellectual Glenn Loury joined Tyler to discuss the soundtrack of Glenn’s life, Glenn's early career in theoretical economics, his favorite Thomas Schelling story, the best place to raise a family in the US, the seeming worsening mental health issues among undergraduates, what he learned about himself while writing his memoir, what his right-wing fans most misunderstand about race, the key difference he has with John McWhorter, his evolving relationship with Christianity, the lasting influence of his late wife, his favorite novels and movies, how well he thinks he will face death, and more.

Bravo TC for not injecting his own opinions, and for allowing us to learn about GL's views. Most interviewers try to impress the person they are interviewing about how smart they are and consequently we don't get to learn all the thoughts of the interviewed.

Good questions. I wish Tyler asked follow-up questions more often, instead of just reading questions from his list, which anyone can do.

Glenn spends so much time talking to non economists that it's fun to watch him talk inside baseball this way.

So much Soul Food in this dialogue! A man who states unabashedly “I don’t know” as many times as Glen did here wins my respect and admiration many times over. It takes courage and humility to admit ignorance.

There is a violent reaction by young Blacks when they feel that their honor has been disrespected. There needs to be a sense of 'yes you can', a sense that honor is earned by doing the right thing and not something that can be demanded. Those on the right and left that treat young Blacks as inferior and incapable of honorable behavior are the problem. There is almost a sense on the right that honorable Blacks that they know are exceptions to the norm and on the left that those Blacks do not represent real Blacks unless they agree that Blacks are not at fault for their dishonorable behaviors and their failures. The extraordinary of any race must be celebrated by those of all races regardless of race, that honor must be given to anyone that earns it and that all must be able to earn it.
