You want oil between the spindle and bearings. The viscosity of the oil keeps the bearings from spinning rapidly on the spindle and destroying it . If you put it together dry it will take time for oil to work its way in there.

Thanks for the video. You did a great job keeping the camera where it needs to be while explaining this. I’ve got the same rear end in my ‘01 2500 (manual tran trucks got the 80 rear too) I’d suggest cutting a groove out of the old race, filing off any leftover burrs, and just push it in with the old one. The groove let’s it compress a little and keeps it from getting stuck.

your old timer was wrong buddy. You want .01-.09" of end play according to specs, its not enough to feel play by hand, but its just enough to allow oil to get between the bearing and the race. Thats also the spec on most oil bath bearings in heavy trucks too.

If the rear end bearing is bad or noisy the bearing and race MUST both be replaced ..I'm not sure you are right about rear ends .. A couple months ago I sold my 2001 Dodge 3500 dually the rear end in it was a dana 80 hybrid .. I have 2 Dodge 2500 12 valves (1998 and 1997) they have dana 70 rear ends .. I have the build sheets for all 3 of these trucks ..

The hub assembly is different for 1994 and 2001 3500 dodge. The hub neck is longer. Also your drum brakes will be different.

Great video I subscibed. My 2002 3500 rear end locked up going down the road. I was able to put it in reverse 4 low and free it up then it drove home. What do you think would be wrong with it?

Do you need to greese those or no grease

You do not need to grease, but I put some oil that I use in the rear end on them just to give them a head start. When the wheels start turning they will get oiled.

Great video Glenn. I had an issue with a Seized bearing that required me to cut my hub off. (Not good) It looks like I have the same diff. I can't find the identification markings on my diff. Any other way to tell what year? I need to find another hub and the right bearings. Thanks- Joel

Dodge puts the rear end information in the glove box. But if it is like mine It is not the first rear and I did not replace the rear with the one it came with. If you can get all the information you can find (numbers off the other bearing) You can go to "torqueking.com/category/1994-2002-dodge-dana-60-identification/" they are very helpful.

You are right, I just read the Dana Service Manual, free on the Internet, says to lube the bearing with rear axle oil prior to install and fill the hub cavity between inner and outer bearing races with oil too, see oage 70 of Sept 2013 manual

Thanks, but I would have liked a little more showing and less explanation, as I have done limited bearing work, and it would have been easier to see than imagine. I am a visual person. My imagination is lacking. 😃
