**Update** Make sure to read my pinned first comment on what happened with the FAA as a result of this video. How random is this: I was showing my glider on the ramp at a large car/air show in Spanish Fork, Utah when they asked me if I could do a glider demo flight for the crowd...Why not? What could I do in the ASW27 that would be interesting and wouldn't likely kill me? I do loops all the time and I have been known to do a few low passes so why not put them together and show everyone how much energy and potential a glider has with just a few thousand feet to work with! I towed to 3k' above the ground and the video shows the rest. What a random and interesting experience! FYI - the owner's manual for the 27 has a page specifically on how to do proper loops. My entry speed was at 115 knots indicated and I was pulling 3.5 g's. I think I pulled them off well enough. The wings didn't come off. While that was fun and all, I think I will be leaving the airshow stuff to the guys who know what they are doing. Last 2 things: I sure wish the helicopter ride business would have just waited so I could finish the routine without having to worry about hitting them taking off or landing while I was swooping. And yes, I saw the segmented circle and flew over it. Did you even notice it? That would have been super bad hitting its pole at 185 mph! Thanks for watching! Bruno - B4

Update 10 months later: I uploaded this video and 4 days later had over 200k views. The video got reported and the FAA had serious concerns with this performance/flight. Lesson learned: Don't fly any kind of performance for any group or crowd (even if asked by the airshow management and cleared through the airboss) if you are NOT an approved airshow performer (have something called a SAC card)!!! The FAA will surely come after you with violations. The end result for me: $$ thousands spent on legal fees and I will soon be taking a forced 7 month break from flying. :( I was told I was very luck to not lose my license permanently over this. Yikes! Why am I sharing all this? I only had good intentions of showing what a glider is capable of doing, but I am not a trained airshow performer and I didn't know the rules for airshow performances. If in doubt - don't do it! I hope this will help other pilots to not have to go through what I have over the last 10 months. Cheers and stay safe! Bruno - B4

Besides the licence issue: There are old pilots and there are bold pilots, but very few old bold pilots. Bruno, I love your videos, as I used to fly gliders in my younger days (and years). As a student I attended the glider more than any lessons at the university. As I see it, you are giving your guardian angel too many jobs to do. Maybe it is just a matter of the angle of the camera, but I see you too often too low too risky. Regards from Germany.

When I first watched this video months ago, I knew this was bad. Aerobatics over a crowd requires all sorts of rules and paper work. Bruno enjoyed flying and wanted to share his interests, but he needed a friend that day, standing at his side, and tell him to slow down and stop before flying over a crowd. I would have done my best to stop him, if I was there.

Here is what I don't get. The airshow management/airboss should have known that there were a bunch of rules and procedures that need to be observed before aerobatics over a crowd. Why did they ask you to do this? Not nice. I am a simple SEL pilot, lacking currency, and I know not to do this.
@carlorff1965
@carlorff1965 3 жыл бұрын
@@michaelmcfeely6588 Michael, I just checked the ASW 27 manual in German language. It does not encourage the pilot to do acrobatics at all. Acrobatics are limited to loopings and some manoeuvres that are more or less standards, such as turn, lazy eight and alike. Acrobatics must be flown without water ballast and with a single flap position of 10 degrees. Obviously in the US a special licence for acrobatis seems to be required, as it does in Germany. Anyway, I wish Bruno many happy landings, flying without any accident and that I can enjoy his videos still in future.

@@michaelmcfeely6588 Thanks for the support Michael. What is strange here is I thought I would be ok due to flying over the field and not the crowd. I never flew directly over the crowd. I'm smarter than that - a little bit. My lowest loop was 1900' AGL and it was 1900' horizontally from the crowd. I guess that was not enough...

Well sure but like the FAA said *it was just so insanely dangerous* - The airliners rerouted, the Helos making emergency put downs, an entire carrier taskforce requiring re-routing, the birds frightened, the cars on the highway colliding, the roof being sucked from the Hanger, the UFOs attracted to the area AND the cows stopping milking. *In the FAA's mind clearly these must have ALL been highly probable scenarios* . As a pilot - I understand you are expected to hold a display licence - *I defy the FAA to point to any dangerous flying*

I took a ride in a glider when I was 4 years old with my mom and dad while we were on vacation. My mom was scared and didn't want to go. My dad told my mom that the pilot said that he needed three passengers or none of us could go. I got upset and my mom relented and agreed to go. While we were in the air, my mom mentioned the 'three-passenger requirement' and the pilot was like: "What three passenger requirement?!?". I think my dad slept on the floor that night. :-)

I was surprised when I learned that too, but of course they need to be able to go around if there's a problem, the same as any other plane. So it's a manoeuvre that they practice. Of course, unlike a powered plane, you only really get one go around, unless you can pick up some more energy from a thermal.
@Mike546378
@Mike546378 2 ай бұрын
@@PartanBree fyi this is only really an aerobatics manoeuvre (and a somewhat risky one at that), the concept of a go around being an option isn't actually something that most glider pilots will practice. Instead, the vast majority of training and practice is around altering the circuit and approach in order to ensure that, by the time you reach the runway, you are able to land safely - can turn onto final early if you are too low, extend downwind, widen the circuit or sideslip if you are too high etc. Generally if you are trying to land and somehow have an excess of energy as show in the vid then something has gone seriously wrong somewhere in the circuit and you're better off overshooting the runway or turning slightly and landing in a field assuming one is nearby 🙂

If there had been an FAA in 1900, the Wright brothers would have never left the ground. Update edit: apparently this comment rubs a lot of people wrong. First - of course I know the Wright brothers flew in 1903 and not 1900, my point was that if the FAA had been established befor they tried to fly they would have never made it through the certification process. Second - yes, the FAA keeps air travel very safe, but there is a point of diminishing returns, and the level of "safety" we think we're achieving comes at the expenses of much common sense and money. Case in point, I was a project engineer at a major airline seat supplier to Boeing. I had a DAR halt final cabin inspection of a plane because 6 first class seats had flotation cushions with the little red straps at the bottom but the placards on the cushion weren't for flotation. No big deal though since the plane did not require flotation cushions, besides, the cushions are the exact same, we just sew on the red straps to the ones that need flotation cushions. Tell the customer they got a few flotation cushions for the price of regular cushions - NOPE, my company had to fly me from Texas to Seattle to cut 12 red straps off the bottom of 6 cushions so the FAA would deem that aircraft safe to fly. An aircraft was held 3 days on final inspection, incurring all of the financial penalties that come with that, so that I and only I could spend 60 seconds cutting a few straps off with a pair of scissors in the presence of this holy priest of the FAA so that the "cushion configuration would match the placard."

Unplanned low-level aerobatics are asking for trouble. At large shows pilots will report their altitude to the airboss before entering a loop, and then get permission to do so. If the reported altitude is below a pre-briefed minimum, the airboss will tell you not to do a loop. Everything goes perfectly until it doesn't.

Gliders can be insanely high performance aircraft...they even have some with little hobby grade turbine engines that extend the fun or go even faster. Why should large corporations be held to the same standards as individuals, when they stand to make so much more money from playing fast and loose with the rules? It simply wouldn't be fair to them to let pesky regulations and oversight stand in the way of those fat revenue streams. And what's one life mildly disrupted, next to the hundreds who died and still didn't have the FAA convinced to ground the MAX until the rest of the world left us no choice? @sjorsschoenmakers3629
@sjorsschoenmakers3629 4 жыл бұрын
@@MikeBrown-ex9nh The Variometer is an instrument that tells you weather you're climbing or sinking, and also compensating for your speed. That means, if you're changing speed by pulling up or diving down, it wil compensate for that. This way the glider pilot has a good reading of what the air around him is doing or in other words, if you're gaining energy or losing energy. The goal with flying a glider is often to gain altitude in a thermal (bubble of rising air), so if that's the case, the vario will indicate a climb rate. When in sinking air it will indicate how fast you're descending. Very important when flying: LOOK OUTSIDE! If you're staring at the vario constantly, that would be a bad thing. Therefore the there is beside the visual indication also the audible indication. When you're losing energy the sound goes to a lower pitch. When climbing, the pitch wil get higher and also interrupted. About the little string: It indicates side slip. When the nose is not pointing exactly in the direction you're flying, you have more drag than normal. The string is an easy indicator of slip and it is right in your view so you don't have to look at the instrument panel. Bonus info: The vario is actually during most of this flight on sollfahrt, or speed to fly. It indicates if your optimum speed is slower or faster than the indicated airspeed. The idea is that you want to stay in rising air as long as possible, and fly quickly trough sinking air. When you fly too fast, it will give a high pitch, when going too slow a low pitch sound. If your speed is close to the optimal speed, it will be silent. Glider pilots often switch to this mode when cruising to the next thermal, and switching back to "normal" vario mode when in a thermal, so they know their climb rate, and hear if they are centered on the thermal.

I had an unforgettable experience back in 1976 when, after returning from a cross country, I decided to do a low pass over the airstrip. At 120 knots and about 10 feet, I saw each individual blade of grass! On pulling back up to circuit height I noticed the climb rate was increasing. I did a few turns and was soon back up to 2000 feet! Your airshow performance brought that memory flooding back. John.

About 40 years ago I was perched in mediitation just under the ridge of a deep box canyon between a couuple of the Flatirons on west side of Boulder. Suddely I hear this erwowlerrowl erwowlerowl nois quickly decreasing in pitch. A glider goes flying past me just 150 away from his wingtip, and at my eye level, and I was 150 feet below the ridge. The headwall of the canyon just 500 feet further. I thought for sure this guy is dead. He slowed down to a near stop pitched up steeply rising about 100 feet (but still below the headwall) did a 180 pedal turn, pivoting in one spot for a second and sucessfully picked up speed with wind pitch rising now and flew out. The width of the canyon was only about 200 feet. To this day I wonder if he crapped his pants, or was just the most expert pilot there is. TRUE STORY. Another TS. A few years later I was living near Eldora ski area. Heard a bunch of continuing Huey activity, so drove up to check out. They setting ski lift towers. And near done. So landed on a small plateau at top of bunny slope. It was a Bell 214B Heavy lift ship with the 36" chord barn door blades. They guys let me check out the cockpit. Then they had to go. I offered em 100 buck for a quick joy ride. They turned it down for insurance reasons, but pointed out a spot for me to go stand about 100 feet away. They took off and headed east and when about 500 feet away pitched it up and also did a 180 pedal turn. Then buzzed me 50 feet over my head. WHOP WHOP WHOP WHOP WHOP. The raw power gave me instant wood! Only time ever that experience without a lady as stimulus.

@@anonnona8099 I did the same when I was at school. End of the week of intense training I flew the glider solo in a simple box circuit after a winch launch. Used the air brakes to lose height after clearing the electricity pylons. All at RAF Sealand.

@old man strength these things have a great glide ratio at low airspeeds. So when they pitch down to dive towards the ground they are adding kinetic energy to the wings. As long as that speed is high they can pull up and gain lots of altitude until the excess airspeed bleeds off and they level out. Add any type of thermal activity and headwinds and the climb rate multiplies. It's all about watching airspeed and leveling off before the glider stalls.

As said above, it's ultimately teh employee who is responsible for his actions. I honestly don't think the show manager should have asked for the performance. He should have known better. He should have gotten a warning or something similar from the FAA, but not much more.
