I've been searching for a perfect bottle for a while... I wanted it to purify, be lightweight, preferably ranger green/olive, and weirdly wanting it to be 500ml only... Grayl somehow knew what to do. I am so thankful I have found your channel via a Becker Harpoon knife review. You have helped me out countless times while planning my new hiking setup.

So glad this exists now. My issue with the previous ultralight lid was that my lips might touch the outside dirty water side of the bottle, or dirty water could drip down the side and contaminate the lip of the bottle. This is going to be a much safer and more useful option.

The lack of a cap retainer leash is a deal breaker in my opinion. Seems like a strange design choice. Great real-world, no-nonsense review as always. Thanks.

A purifier is quite different to a filter. Most sawyer, katadyn and platypus are filters that take care of bacteria and protozoa but not viruses. It’d need another process to take care of viruses like steripen, boiling or a chemical treatment. Grayl takes care of bacteria, protozoa AND viruses without needing further treatment. That’s huge in my book. Some people only see the price tag and the filter lifespan and not what it actually does.

Hey that’s where I was born and raised. That’s super sweet you all ended up down there. One of the coolest places on the earth in my opinion. It will ALWAYS be home to me. We’re in San Antonio now which is a cool place too. You all definitely picked the right time to be down that way! Enjoy and say hi to that beautiful lake for me!! The other comment regarding Havasupai, yes, you definitely have to check that out sometime. Enjoy and y’all be safe!

I love my geopress so much. I wud never buy the ultrapress for one reason. The drink cap is not attached. That wud be sooo easy to loose and that piece is crucial for it to work well anf protect a vital resource like water. It cud bobble right out of ur fingers so easily on trail or if ur tired or if u misplace it etc. Why not use a gram up and just keep the cap attached like the geopress. No one is gonna worry about the weight of an attachment silicone piece. Every product that gets made always has one thing so obviously needed but left out. How do u not think oh maybe we shud keel it easy so no one looses the cap. Etc etc. But great review!!!!

When you go on your tips you should take little bottles with you, catch water from sources you filter from and then test them for stuff when you arrive home. Just to see if it actually did need filtering in the first place, and if so, how bad? :)

I got one in tan. The only thing I wish was different is not having a lid toggle. However I'll just have to not loose it. Grayl are great filters.

I wish they had a place on the top of the lid that the screw cap could screw on when you take it off to drink. Just a couple threads to hold it.

Just hiked 35 miles on the Lone Star Hiking Trail in the Sam Houston National Forest. There were water sources on the trail but they were of very poor quality. Received reports of a couple of hikers who were sickened with Norovirus even after filtering their water while on the LSHT. Looks like a Grayl water filter addition to my hiking kit is in the future.

I got one of these and hated it. No matter how I pressed, more water would squeeze out of the top than would actually get filtered. I just thought that’s how it was. If I pressed REALLY fast it would filter about half the water before squirting the rest out. However i got a new one and it’s WAY better. Literally not a drop of water comes out, it all gets filtered and into the clean reservoir. I got a bad one the first time and didn’t know it because I didn’t have anything to compare it to. These things are great, when they work.

I may get one for all of the times that I hike on other continents or backpack near heavy metal waste areas. The rest of the time, I'll use my Squeeze with a 2 liter bag since I've never really had a problem with water sources backpacking for three decades.

There is a big difference...like life and death difference between water filters and water purifiers. Those two terms are NOT synonymous. You want the best method for purifying water? BOIL IT. The biggest problem with lazy hikers is they don't understand the importance of pre-filtering your dirty water. Then complain the filters are clogged. DIRT will clog up a .02 micron filter in seconds. I recommend for those of you who are not lazy hikers to be smart and buy a MILLBANK bag and pre-filter your water first.

G'day Aaron, another fantastic option from Grayl, a definite improvement over the little fella. Like the swivel handle in particular, would have been nice to have had that on the big boy too + keeping the cap retainer. Anyway thanks for showing it mate, if I ever go for another this will probably be the one. Cheers Duke.

Unfortunately i refuse to get this even though it’s great for the simple reason that 150 liters (40 gallons) is such a limited use that it’ll need continual changing, but I’ll never remember or know when that should be. (Maybe you will, but I won’t- it’s impractical and what if you lend it out?). And if the filter is past it’s limited window, then the whole product is useless. These companies with limited use products need to find a way to show when the product is expired especially when there are health issues if the filter is no longer working. This is definitely a better product than the Sawyer, but the Sawyer at 100k gallons - I never have to replace it. This only filters about 40 gallons which mean it will need consistent replacing and you have to guess when it stops working. Because health is at stake, I’ll be a customer only when they find a way to have the product monitor when those 40 gallons expire instead of making the consumer guess if this product is working any more or not. If you guess wrong - you could get sick

Another deal breaker that drove me away from ever considering them is when people claimed "it'll filter out soda and make it as clear as water" yeah that was a major lie infact it actually would compromise the filter entirely but hey people would trust them after that dubious marketing.

Have you been to Havasupai? It is like a fairy tale world..... So beautiful. I don't understand the press type of filters.....I own a MSR microworks....and several Sawyers.... But I don't see the point of doing a press.....not much fluid capacity....and you have to stay near the source..... versus filling up a nalgene or smart water bottle and squeezing as you go. Can anyone tell me the why of the press filters?

I recently purchased the grayl geo press and was really let down to see that with the zero water tester tested tap water tested exactly the same straight from the tap as it did after putting it through the geopress... Then with the ionizer test where you put 2 electrodes in the water it didn't do any better than the tap water... The zero water filter by contrast did very well. I searched the KZfaq for similar test and apparently no one is doing this.
