Is this the worst idea we've ever had? We wanted to find out just how fast you can tow a 700kg caravan by bike. Thankfully ultra endurance cycling legend Mark Beaumont was on hand to attempt the world record for us.

Some tips for the next attempt: - Use fat tires at lower pressure, to increase grip and get better leverage. - Swap the front wheel for one with a smaller radius, like 24", to increase weight on the front . - Change the caravan's tires for the skinnier ones you can get, and inflate them at their highest pressure possible. - Use a thru-axle, steel-frame bike. Another option would be to use a Hase Kettwiesel delta trike. With a solid attachment to the frame, a differential for two wheel drive, and a Schlumpf Mountain Drive, you will have no problems spinning the pedals to move that caravan.

As any heavy boat owner will tell you, comfortably driving down the road at good speed requires just the right amount of tongue weight. If you are going to go faster, you need a new mount that will deliver the load to the bottom bracket so both bike wheels are being loaded by the caravan. Then you move the caravan axle forward and backwards until you get just the right tongue weight, which you find by experimenting. Something like 5-10 lbs would probably be about right for the speeds you want, but be careful: falling and getting run over by a caravan at 25 MPH would be dangerous.

Impressive. But the average speed (of trials in each direction) was calculated incorrectly. True, it’s the average of the two numbers, but not your rate over the total of the 50 m “raced”. Rate = distance / time. Distance in each direction was obviously the same, but time was not. At d=25, I get time for the 11.093 run to be 2.476964233 seconds. The other direction was 2.535239834sec. (Actually should use their timing numbers, which presumably are not that precise.) So, the average speed would be 2*50/(t1+t2) = 9.977 km/hr. ( rounded). Still, pretty impressive. So the distinction of the average of the two speeds needs to be made with the average speed. I’m wondering if there are more established speed records where the accepted protocol is to make a timed run over a stretch in both directions and establish the average of the two speeds, and not the average overall speed, as the basis for the record. Anyone know?

Finally, Mark is GCN Staff(!). Strikes me that a few sandbags behind the rear axle of the trailer (either inside, as far back as possible, or back on the bumper), and a sandbag (or, better, lead-shot filled bag) over the handlebars, would balance the hitch-weight out nicely enough that you wouldn't need - and wouldn't be hindered by - the little wheel up at the trailer tongue. Surely there isn't a rule of making the trailer, and bike, a tiny amount heavier? Extra weight may seem counter-intuitive, but it's mass that, once you get it going, will be beneficial to the balance of the tractor and trailer. Tiny cars pulling too big of caravans have proven this out over the decades - they generally can get the caravans up to speed on the flats, but their clutches or transmissions normally fail early.

weighing in with experience at building and towing weird loads on a bike: I built a trailer using a Burley 2-seat and about 100kg of steel plate, what I found while moving a house on its ten foot long deck was to balance the load over the axle to the point where a five year old could lift the front and turn the whole assembly on his own. This way, the standing load on the bike was neutrally balanced on both wheels, and the moving load moved backward on the trailer but FORWARD on the bike (see-saw effect with the ball joint as the pivot). This effect would be mitigated at the front by the rider loading the back wheel maintaining traction and reducing the snake motion. which is caused by loss of traction on the back wheel of the bike and misbalanced load on the trailer. There would be no mitigation at the back of the trailer which would increase the rolling resistance of its wheels by the moving load trying to pull the front up. This is actually an advantage when it comes to stopping. You only use the rear brake on the bike and lean forward to keep the front wheel down since the sudden deceleration pushed the front of the trailer down forcing the front of the bike up, hence total loss of traction. The front wheel is thus basically only for steering as long as you're moving. And yes, 25mph is not beyond the realms of possibility, it is just unbelievably dangerous with a 1500lb static load.

You can tell none of the people at Guinness are cyclists if they thought 25mph was a good minimum! That said I'm pretty sure I could do better, mostly by modifying the caravan (so it has it's own brakes and balances about the rear axle).

As an engineering tidbit, it may be easier to tow, if you set up an arrangement where the axle of the trailer's jockey-wheel is the attachment point for the bike-to-trailer towing arm, so that the jockey-wheel and the rear wheel of the bike are constantly pointing the same direction, preventing the trailer "tail" from wagging the bicycle "dog", and the weight of the trailer can be more completely decoupled from the tow-arm and bicycle...

As soon as I saw him mount that hitch to a quick release skewer I knew that would snap it. I can't even pull a 70kg trailer with a QR skewer lol. I had to fit a solid bolt on axle to make it work. And you can pull that heavy trailer all the way to the first hill is how far you can pull one. You should of used a mountain bike or a hybrid to do this with. They keep their front wheel on the ground better and when you're pulling serious weight you get more leverage with your shoulders and go faster than you would using drop bars. Wider tires give better traction and stability allowing you to put more power to the ground. Your right about being a big heavy strong guy because you need the additional mass to control the heavy load. If you had my rig you would of done much better perhaps 10 or 11 mph but 25 mph under human power with that kind of load is an impossible feat. Pulling heavy trailers is a world of counterintuity lol.

I was bored, so decided to do the math. Even if we ignore every source of friction, he'd still have needed to hold a constant 300W for 2 minutes 40 just to reach that speed in the allocated distance. But that means I ignored drivetrain loss, rolling resistance of the tires, rolling resistance of the axles and drag, which would need to be added back. It also assumes he can begin applying this power from the start.

Here is a genuine tip for the next attempt: Use a mtb or even a fat bike, as the thicker tyres will provide far more grip. Also put panniers over the front wheel with say 20kg of weight. This will help deal to keep the front tyre gripping. Also set the caravan jockey wheel on something like a pull spring or something akin to suspension so that it doesn't lift the back wheel of the bike.

Love the idea and great effort from Mark, the shaky handheld video genuinely made me feel sick though, not quite GCN's usual exceptional standard.

Lol - this is the kind of thing that Clarkson and Co. used to get up to back in the day! What's the worst that could happen.........apart from the caravan flipping over? Option 1: you forget you're towing a caravan and head onto a small path leading off a road.....with bollards at the start of it Option 2: you forget you're towing a caravan and decide you're going to 'bomb it' down a fairly steep hill......you then brake hard at the bottom of it Option 3: you remember you're towing a caravan and park up near some cliffs...........you turn round so that you are facing away from the cliffs, and uncouple the caravan .....there's a bit of a slope down to the cliffs, and you forget to put the caravan brake on. You take a swig from your bottle, then look round your shoulder only to see the caravan disappearing over the cliffs. You get off your bike, rush down to the cliff edge and see the caravan in pieces on the rocks below. Whoops. Good thing there was no one in it - phew........but all your camping kit was.

I was a pedicab driver for 12 years and pulled that much weight more than a few times. If you use a tricycle instead of a bicycle you will have more stability which can allow you to use more power into moving forward.

Nice. You can try with an Mtb e-bike. You can put extra battery in the caravan, with wires to the motor. And of course, solar panels on the roof 😝

An easy calculation gives the answer to what is required for 25mph for that caravan. Just use a dynamometer behind a car to measure the total resistance for the caravan on flat road in 25mph. The strongest track cyclists can put out around 2000w in a short burst. This means ~181N. Ok, assume he could put out fully 3 hp, which is 2200: this will be 200N in 25mph. I guess the total resistance of that caravan is at least twice than that at 25mph. However; I would like to see Robert Forstemann on a trike with wide driving wheels for this task!

I had this issue of snaking at high speed when I made a bike trailer from a bike. The trailer needs to support some, but not all, of its weight, and you will mainly be drawbar power, but you do need some load on the rear wheel. Having the jockey wheel (no option for me) down unloads the rear wheel, which is good for steering, but as you found, is bad for acceleration.

Seriously though I think a hardtail or full rigid mountain bike, maybe even a fat bike or a tandem would make more sense. Looked like you would need a lot more wheel base and weight to control that beast. That said, 25mph seems outrageous.

Great experiment very interesting but you guys went about it the wrong way instead of using the front support wheel of the caravan you should have used something like a gun carriage to support the shackle of the caravan to the bike
