Great to see Oulu ("ol" as in "old", "u" like the "oo" in "tool") finally get a mention on your show. I cycle here every day of the year. I've been meaning to suggest you guys visit for ages. Here we're building a big network of segregated bike-only paths (we already have over 800km of segregated paths for bikes and pedestrians), we have strict rules about regularly ploughing the snow from and gritting the main cycle paths, and we have "cycling agents" i.e. cyclists that give feedback on the main bike path conditions in winter & in return can receive LBS vouchers, lights etc. I'd be happy to show you round and act as an interpreter where required. We're a coastal city affected by the Gulf Stream so not usually as cold as inland Canada it's true, but we did have a week of max -31 degrees Celsius in January. And yes Si will need his lights, we get about 4 hours of light during the heart of winter. Depending on the conditions he might want to borrow some spiked tyres too.

It won't be as cold pre-Christmas (Dec 23's avg temp was -8 compared with Jan '24 avg of -13). As another viewer commented, you should definitely get in contact with Pekka Tahkola - kzfaq.info - he's the guru on winter cycling in Oulu as he works as the city's Cycling Coordinator

The city centre pretty much covers it all. The red cycle paths are of course under snow for 6 months so in addition to the usual signs in certain places cycle path symbols are projected onto the snow. Some of the main paths also have electronic signs displaying a live tally of the daily number of cyclists and pedestrians. @@gcn

In my opinion, TT is like the F1 of cycling. There should be rules of course, but keep the TT stuff in TT. let them go crazy for TT. But don't let it bleed in without reason to overall "road bike" races

Thanks @griffithd05 for your reply. I agree. I also agree that it was good that the UCI stepped in to keep the bike frames looking like we are accustomed but helmets, pedals, handlebars, etc are all free game and especially in the TT! Let them cut through the air as best the can and go as fast as they can.

I’ve always thought aero ridiculous for the average rider, including deep section wheels and aero bars. They look fine to me in time trials though because those are all about speed. Maybe this is a controversial view, but I think it should be all or nothing: either anything goes (the more aero the better) or just ride conventional bikes and wear road cyclist gear. Time trial bikes are dangerously unstable and hard to control and I don’t see why we couldn’t just use normal bikes with aero tubing and have riders ride in the drops with normal helmets and glasses instead of visors.

@JoeBond2077 disc brakes got people training all year on aero wheels because they're not wearing down brake tracks anymore. As for TT bikes, I ride mine all the time. Not for most of my mileage but still over 100miles most weeks. They're not unstable messes that are hard to control. You just don't wanna crit race them.

I, for one, would wear that helmet, but after shouting "BANANA" like a minion, i'd take it off again. Sinclair Zike, from 1992; 100 watts, 3 position throttle, regenerative charging, 15mph max when self-propelled. People are currently trying to find a solution to a problem they created by changing the rules, and forgetting what the old ones were. The C5 was 250 watts, also had a throttle switch.

I'm not sure that running the rear derailleur off the main battery on the Grizl On is a good idea. The GCN video about the bike said that range anxiety wasn't anything to worry about as it's just a normal bike when the battery runs out. On this bike, if that happens, you can't change gear.

Forget the "Spirit of Gravel" are you saying that the helmets are against the "Spirit of Road"? As long as the helmet does its job and protects the rider, I don't see any reason to ban it. If the helmet is dangerous, ban it.

I visited Oulu in 1980 as a 15 year old for a hockey tournament (yup I’m Canadian and can compare and contrast the winters). Oulu is above the artic circle and I still distinctly remember the many many people riding bikes in Oulu then. We even took a drive to the soviet (now Russian) border on the Helsinki to (then named) Leningrad road. Upon arriving … in addition to the thirty Russians who emerged from the woods with automatic weapons to greet us, we were also greeted by a guard on a bicycle! I could even send you the photo (if you like).

It seems controversial to say this but I don't think TT should be a fashion show. If you beat the world record, that's more cred than "The guy in 299th place's helmet looks slightly less uncool". But from what I read over the years, many road cyclists are obsessed with looks to an astonishing degree. It's fair to say "I don't like that design" but I take issue with "I don't like that design so it needs to be banned".

It’s not THAT bad! I mean, come on, since when have new bike helmets ever looked ‘normal’. I remember riding around in one of the early polystyrene and Lycra horrors, years later I thought a Catlike looked normal! And those of us wearing the early aero head fairings for time trials had to put up with some serious ridicule!

Yeah, I was chatting to a mate of mine earlier. We both remember the outcry when hardshell helmets were introduced. Huge Brancale model used by Bugno etc was an eye opener, but we move on!

Now that all races started I really miss GCN+. Current streaming platforms (in my case Eurosport) don't provide as much races and also they do not stream whole races as GCN+ did. Not to mention all the great documentaries that shortened the time on the trainer and motivated me even more.

My first thought was: if it's faster, then why not. Sport must evolve. Later I saw that helmet. This kind of development is rather a mutation that can't survive... I hope ;)

The idea of a helmet is to protect your head if it hits the ground. If you make it bigger, you have a much greater chance of hitting your head, and if the helmet catches on the ground you're potentially in for some rotational brain damage. Great idea.

It is (partly) a fashion show. The manufacturers of all parts and accessories exist to sell them and part of that is if people think they look good.

This is ridiculous. If the goal is to be more aerodynamic, which is simply what this helmet is about. Then why haven't the UCI set limits for how low a person can go on the bike......like "the upper body must be above parallel". And why didn't they ban other aero helmets, or other ways to get more aero? Why not just put out a rule that says "all riders must be an upright position at all times, the back must be at 45 degrees, legs must not be shaven, and aero clothing is not allowed, and all bikes must have round tubing" Utterly ridiculous to even consider banning it.

With respect to winter cycling in Finland, there was a KZfaq video three years ago about this, pointing out the wimpiness of we Canadians. In fact, the city of Oulu (pronounced O-lu, apparently) is an outlier compared to even other Finnish settlements simply because the city authorities there have authorized the clearing of snow from not only roads but also bikepaths, thus allowing people to use them all year around. Here in Ottawa (the other city Dan couldn't pronounce) bikepaths in winter are simply buried under snow and unusable most years.

I like it. It is a pretty ingenious way of closing the gap between hands and head when in tt position. Looks like it has a good field of vision, too.

The UCI has made rules to preserve the aesthetics of the classic bicycle but they dropped the ball by allowing these head cones. It's a fairing for their head.

To me, that helmet is a helmet with a fairing. The UCI could define what is required for protection, consider any additional expansions outward as fairings.

I get why people make fun of the odd-looking helmets, I am not partial to them either. But it's a sport and if we draw an analogy from Formula 1, formula cars also look ridiculous compared to a classic car (think Porsche 911 for example, or anything else you'd consider a classic). But it's a pinnacle of technology in that particular sport, just as these helmets might currently be the pinnacle of aero tech development in cycling.

I wish I had 2 of those new Giro Aero helmets. One to shit in and the other one to cover it up. Oh, and judging by the results, it wasn't the fastest helmet on Stage 1 of T-A, so Jumbo looked like asses to not win.
