I've watched your playthrough a few months back and it's what inspired me to purchase the game. And now with this review I can just say your content is really amazing. It has to take a ton of time to film these videos and they are clearly well thought out and well articulated. Subscribed, and hope to see more of your content in the future!

You are the very best of explaining a deep, complicated game like Gloomhaven. You know what details are unnecessary to highlight in a basic review, and you explain and show very clearly an overview of the game. Nice work!

I'm with you. I think this game is SO smart in its mechanisms and gameplay -- but the time commitment is rough.... For myself I've just decided that I likely will not ever finish the campaign, but by bringing it out 2 or 3 times a month can still have an extremely great time while at it. Also, I invested in the Broken Token insert -- and I really like it -- but I LOVE that blank CD sleeve idea even more than the deck boxes that the BT insert has..... I wonder if I can find some kind of way to use those sleeves with this insert.... hmmmm....

Great review and played a big part in me getting the game- and I haven’t been disappointed! I’m maybe 50% the way through the campaign now and totally get your critique in that the progression is slow, but everything else is so great. Also; I much prefer the health/xp trackers on the character boards from 1st edition- the dials take up much needed table space for me 😂

With the movement of monsters, my party just simplified it to "Moves to the closest player character and if the distance is the same, move to the character with the highest initiative that turn. If already engaged with a character, they continue to fight that character." Makes it super simple and also seems balanced. I am the Tinkerer and tend to go early in initiative order, which makes me a target often but I can also plan to move away and heal if needed. It just adds to the fun of planning our turns. I'd rather spend my thinking time planning my card plays than moving monsters around...

Positive #4 is so true. We've won every scenario so far, but MANY have come down to the absolute last turn where if we did not get that +2 damage, we would have lost.

We use timers for choosing your cards each round and for your turn. 5 and 2 minutes respectively. This helps to keep the overall time each scenario takes down. It's really easy, especially for indecisive people, to get stuck with analysis paralysis and take 20 minutes to choose two cards lol

Hi Jon. Thanks for the great informative video. I just finished breaking down my components into a cheaper solution than the $60+ inserts you can buy online. My question is, can you link the BGG quiz you took for enemy movement? I'd like to take it after my first scenario or two. Edit - Thanks!

One great way to cut down scenario time is to use an app to help deal with bookkeeping and enemies. Have only played about 10 scenarioes but each takes my group about an hour at this point. Makes it alot easier to keep track of everything so the party can focus on their own characters. Also means you dont have to deal with the enemies modifier and ability decks, finding their stat cards, tracking their hp and status, room infusions etc. Can recommend Gloomhaven Helper or Gloomhaven DM.

I've played the game at a friend and really enjoyed it. That said, the 2 main negative points (fiddly/housekeeping & 'too big') came across there as well. I wonder if the game would have been better off split in 2; instead of ~70 scenario's to finish a campaign, could have been ~35 (with 50 available in the box or something). Leave out some enemies, cut some classes... and make it into an expansion. It would also keep the cost down of the (main) box, be better storable etc.

I 110% agree with you on the difficulty factor. My group has played over 50 times and lost a small number of times. Sometimes due to stupidity on our part. But in many scenarios it comes down to a single card draw or two people being exhausted and the other two barely scraping by.
@klinktastic

Yeah, its because winning the scenario is somewhat easy. Winning while getting most of the loot and getting good experience, that is much harder.

On your comment about "book-keeping", I'll say that my gaming group has been using a third-party companion app that is available on Steam and it works like a dream. There are also other apps available on Android and iOS, although I haven't tested them. They even eliminate the use of monster modifier cards, they do turn tracking and dole out the monster actions. I've felt like this game NEEDS an insert and a companion app. Maybe there will be a third edition incorporating those, because it's so much better with them that it feels like it should be played with them.
@JonGetsGames
@JonGetsGames 4 жыл бұрын
We messed around with a web based companion app at one point but ultimately decided we didn't mind the clutter and just went with the cards as it came in the box. I can totally see why others would use them though.

Agreed, game is really good. If you like dungeon crawls with some really great mechanics/variability, with a legacy world-building aspect that drives the campaign--then this is a must-buy. I've enjoyed it quite a bit.

Hi! Is it possible to play campaign two different group of people with only one box. I mean one group playing one week and other group - other week?
@JonGetsGames
@JonGetsGames 6 жыл бұрын
Hmm, it's possible but honestly it'd get pretty complicated if you have more than 2 people in each group. This is because the game only comes with 4 attack modifier decks so if more than 4 characters are active at any one point in time then you will have to swap these around and considering each character customizes the deck this could be difficult. There is also an issue of item limits, the actual items in the store seem to have enough for up to 4 characters at once and if you have more then that active then some of the good basic items simply won't be available since they are already all bought.

There are official rules included for playing with more than one party. Officially, both parties play in the same world, but have their own histories, own set of characters, and own item supply. So, rules as written, you'd need to create a second character for the second party. Attack modifier decks would have to be rebuilt whenever you switch parties to allow for the changes, and may also need to switch items back and forth if the two parties between them have more than the total (per-party) supply of a given item. Officially, each scenario can only be completed by one party, and there are some scenarios that require an earlier scenario to have been completed by that party in order to attempt them - in particular, Scenario 2 requires the party to have completed Scenario 1 - so, particularly early in the campaign before things open up more, the second party will be limited to "casual mode" (which, officially, keeps them from doing Road/City Events and donating to the Sanctuary). Opening up random side scenarios and getting to a point where the main plot starts branching will let two parties both explore different things. I suspect the general idea behind the additional-party rules is that someone who's already played a number of scenarios, maybe retired some characters, can start playing the game with a new group without having to reset everything, and without being massively over-leveled (though player experience also counts and there's not a lot to be done about that) - a level 5 character escorting a bunch of level 2s (new characters get free levels based on Gloomhaven's prosperity) isn't going to be much fun for either side - the level 2s will have trouble with the higher-level monsters, while the level 5 has trouble finding anything worth unleashing their stronger attacks on... The other options, particularly if you have more than one player in both groups (so at most 6 players total) are: - to just have a single large party - the repeat players play the same character each week, while the other characters swap in and out depending on who's there. That can leave the recurring characters getting runaway experience, and does mean that the item supply is going to be stretched thin, but does mean you can mix-and-match players between groups so long as you never have more than 4 for a given scenario. - to have a single regular party but have some characters controlled by more than one player - so the Spellweaver gets played by Frank in odd weeks and Beth in even weeks - and they get together from time to time to agree about character progression (which card to add to their pool and which perk to take when leveling, and which item(s) to buy/save up for when shopping).

Played Gloomhaven for the first time a couple of days ago. A couple of things virtually killed the group's interest. The first is the loot-ninja element of the game. The person who taught us made it clear that characters were incapable of sharing. This led to a lot of situations where one player would pop a monster, and then another would run in and steal the loot. Some characters are much better at looting than others, so some characters came out with much more money. So, it's like Cutthroat Caverns, but we're all supposed to keep playing together rather than go our separate ways. The other issue was that some characters had too many of those "X" cards that are only one-shot abilities. Gets to a point where characters have to rest every other turn. And apparently, players don't get more cards to play with, ever.
@JonGetsGames
@JonGetsGames 6 жыл бұрын
When it comes to money, people really need to talk about who is interested in which money to try and make everyone happy with the outcome. It is a cooperative game at the end of the day, though I'd be lying if I said we havn't had times where a friend grabbed money I'd said I was going to get... this was always so that they could satisfy a battle goal though. Regarding the X cards, in general they are more complicated and do have those powerful one time use abilities. The rules I believe suggest not using any of them for your first play and I think your experience is why.
@JTNugget
@JTNugget 6 жыл бұрын
Getting coin tokens isn't the main goal of the game, nor is it one of the main components that makes it fun. Which characters are you talking about? I've played or played with 6 different characters at this point and none of them have had too many lost action cards. Even if you're forced to have 3 or 4 of them in your hand, there is still a way you're more or less meant to be playing. The best strategy is never going to be to play your lost action cards unless it's absolutely a must before your first rest because it creates an exponential like effect on how many future turns you lose out on. And another thing, you do know that you can do short rests too, right? You don't have to lose a turn at all by resting with a short rest. I only take long rests if all the enemies in the room are dead or if my companions can take care of what is left and I need to regain health and refresh an item. It took a couple games to fully adjust to, but I almost never end a scenario with less than 4 or 5 cards in my hand and discard pile unless that scenario was a very tough one on the group.

Neutral #3 is a negative for me. I normally setup every game I buy and play a few rounds (3-player if possible), just to get the feel of the game and facilitate rules explanation. I don't believe I'll play this game solo at all, just because of having to do the bookkeeping on my own. It is enough a problem that it keeps you from staying immersed in the game. On the other hand, I will be playing this 2 or 3 player, most of the time with no rush to end the campaign, so I don't believe game time will be an issue. It's a great game. It is amazing in it's design. Still, it's a dungeon crawler with a different twist. It won't be my favorite game.

I really respect the rule that you can't discuss numbers when choosing cards. Even in video games, I find you can get bogged down in number crunching, so I like how they're just saying 'No, that's not the point. Don't do that!' It's also cool to think that, eventually, you may be familiar with your allies' abilities, and with good memory you don't even have to talk much. At that point, you'd be experienced mercenaries that are in tune with each-other's abilities. Rather badass, right? Edit: Yo, Jon, I like to edit my comments a lot, and I think I ended up removing your heart on my comment when I added an apostrophe. I appreciate it, though!

A game like this should be PC game instead. No offence. Why you HAVE to play it on a table? It just seem extreme fiddly. Or, why don't play an RPG game with a gamemaster instead? A RPG game becomes no.1 strategy game, due to the faulty ratingsystem at BGG. Weird, just freaking weird.
