Gloucester & Sharpness Canal versus the River Severn

The Gloucester & Sharpness Canal was opened in 1827 to bypass the treacherous part of the River Severn below Gloucester. At Purton barges were placed between the canal and river to prevent erosion, now known as the Purton Hulks.

Thank you Chris. Lovely to see the old photographs of Sharpness. Also wonderful to see the drone footage of Sharpness today with vessels in the docks. Went to the Perton hulks as a little kid, had a fantastic time. Did some work at Awre when I was younger (worked on a farm), first time I really got to see how fast the tide was there. Thank you again. A wonderful and informative film

Many thanks for your comments. I am new to flying the drone, some days it is easy, some days I lose it up in the sky! Apparently I am not the only one to do this.

Used to play on the barges as a kid get coins and stuff from the blower go fishing in yhe timber ponds and at taits point and I have been in every one of those cottages there's a secret cottage ruins in the undergrowth and some beaches hidden

I have heard about the dangerous things children got up to there, including swimming in the Severn!

@@ChrisWitts never swam I the Severn a few people got in trouble trying to cross the river not knowing the path

@@ChrisWitts we used to swim in the canal down on the beaches by the old railway crossing bridge on the far side not the tow path side
