Glow Plug Replacement for OM617 Engine on a 1983 Mercedes W123 300D

Diesel glow plugs are a fundamental heating element that provides incoming fuel and the air required for combustion with heat to ensure efficient fuel combustion in your diesel engine. On cold days without a good glow plug you may not be able to get your car started.
In this video I show how to perform maintenance replacement of the glow plugs for an OM617 Engine on my 1983 Mercedes 300D. There are different style of glow plugs throughout the W123 series, so I will not post a link to the Bosch plugs I used as you should make sure the ones you order are the ones needed for your vehicle. You can remove the hard fuel lines and make it a lot easier to access the glow plugs. I just didn’t want to have to reprime the fuel lines but I think I just put to much thought into that and spent a lot more effort working around them. I’ve had all the fuel lines off before and it really wasn’t that bad. In any case if you don’t want to do the work yourself this is a job any good diesel mechanic can knock out for you. I got one glow plug out and cleaned that nastiness and cleaned the main contact on the glow plug relay and this thing already starts much better. Waiting on a swivel socket extension to get the other 4 glow plugs. Thank you for sharing your journey with us. Aloha

At the time I hadn’t removed them before and didn’t realize how easy that would have made it. Great suggestion and I wish I would have shown that instead of worked around them.

I think if you take the hard lines off it makes the job faster. But that's how I do it.

how do I get the hood vertical??

There are latches on the W123 near the springs that you pull out and then the hood will go into service position. I will see if I can find a video for you.
