In this video, I demonstrate how straightforward it can actually be to use the built-in, proof-grade settings on non-proofgrade materials, bought from a different supplier.
The information in this video was captured upon request by some of the members of my Glowforge UK Facebook Group that I started earlier in the year with the goal of sharing the information I had collated for prospective UK Glowforge owners to learn about how to purchase a Glowforge 3D laser printer, how to get started, where to get materials, plus tips and tricks and lots more.
The group is not a place to sell files although I do allow one promotional post per day if you wish - it is a place to learn and grow as a new Glowforge owner, or if so wished, to reach out and help to grow the UK Glowforge community as an experienced Glowforge user - if you can contribute, you're welcome, if you need help choosing which machine to buy, you're welcome!
If you want to spam everyone with your files and products, you're not welcome!

Neat. What tape did you use to cover the wood?

Hi, thanks for watching. The tape I used was a medium tack wide roll masking tape bought from GM Crafts UK. They do a large range of low, medium and high tack tape at varying lengths. Other suppliers are of course available too.

@@artistrobfuller Just received some of the tape you recommended this morning and have done a cut using it. It's so much better than the masking tape I was using before. Thanks for the great recommendation.

There could be a number of causes so here are some things to consider: 1. Did you mask the material? 2. Is the crumb tray cleaned regularly? - a build up of residue, burnt glue, charring etc can mark the material when you make your cuts via the flashback which can be reduced by cleaning it regularly and using masking tape. 3. Are your power settings too high for the material you’re using? - reducing the power slightly and/or increasing the speed can reduce the amount of scorching. 4. I use a couple of little 3mm offcut circles as risers to make cuts where I want to avoid too much scorching from the flashback eg when cutting acrylic. Just take into consideration the height differential and use the manual ‘set focus’ option each time you cut using this method. 5. It’s most likely that the non pg material, if it’s plywood or mdf, contains more glue in the construction process and therefore will kick out more residue than the higher quality pg material so there will be a noticeable difference to take into consideration. I hope this helps somewhat moving forward.
