Lesson on Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Deficiency: Introduction, Pathophysiology, Signs and Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatment. Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase (G6PD) Deficiency is the most common inherited red blood cell disorder leading to hemolytic anemia. Decreased levels and activity of the Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase enzyme leads to impaired functioning of the pentose phosphate pathway, reduced NADPH generation and reduced ability of the red blood cell to handle oxidative stress in the form of reactive oxygen species (ROS).
The majority of individuals with this condition are asymptomatic but have periods of acute hemolysis due to triggering factors. Triggers can include infections, medications like dapsone and primaquine, chemicals like naphthalene and henna, and foods like fava beans.
Hey everyone! This is a lesson on the blood disorder known as G6PD Deficiency. In this lesson, you will learn about the epidemiology of G6PD Deficiency, the role of the pentose phosphate pathway in the disease, signs and symptoms of this disease, tests to help diagnose the disease and treatments.

I love how people throw the expression "in parts of Africa" while giving a very precise info on other population. Africa is huge and has very diverse ethnic groups with all the world genes existing just in Sub-Saharian Africa alone. So, please next time, tell us where in Africa.

I had no clue I had this deficiency. I was going to get a high dose vitamin c IV and my doctor ordered the test. The test came back that I had this gene 🧬. I don’t believe I have any symptoms but it’s good to know

Question: Would supplementation with "N-acetylcysteine (NAC)" or "S-Acetyl L-Glutathione" or "liposomal glutathione" or "reduced glutathione" directly ... increase or counter-balance glutathione levels-shortages in individuals with a G6PD deficiency ??
@kayolastna2215
@kayolastna2215 10 ай бұрын
Can't answer that but I have heard it's better to supplement with NAC instead of glutathione as this allows for better intracellular regulation of glutathione. Too much can be detrimental as with most things.

Brilliant video but I don't think you need to say glucose 6 phosphate dehydrogenase as many times.... Perhaps just say the letters and it would be much more pleasant to watch/hear. Good work.
