It's very beautiful song, i like it to hear it in all versions, i don't care about the origins of the song, i am from bulgaria, and i think that the song belongs to us, bosnians,bulgarian,serbians,greeks, turks,albanese, everybody who likes to sing it. Greetings to everybody on the Balkans, muslim or hristian brother

I love this folk song dating back to the early Ottoman days. An Arabic version for the same melody existed in Baghdad, Iraq for at least 150 years.

From a foreign and distant place There came a girl, my light, 18 years old She doesn't come out in the door or the allay Nor to my window my light, to tell her a coule of words She has black eyes and curly hair And on his chick, my light, has a beauty spot You don't lent her to me, you don't sell it to me The beauty spot, my light, and you torture me I don't lent it to you, I don't sell it to you I just want to give it away to the one I love

The melody is from everywhere. Turkey, Greece, Bosnia, the Middle East, and has even been heard in Sephardic Jewish communities. You can't say it's just from one place... it is believed to have been a Mehter, but it is likely that it existed before then

Ι know because byzantine music did not disappear, it just envolved. Actually the only good thing of the Ottoman Occupation in greece is that we got to preserve our culture almost identical till today. Such songs have the same basis with medieval greek psalms. As for the rest I agree. ;)

Is it "Uskudara Giderken"? Eartha Kitt recorded a version called "A Turkish Tale". It sounds like the same tune, but it's hard to tell because this is much slower.

Well amigos... i dunno and dont care if its Turkish or greek... i just enjoy the song.. but the song is from istanbul...not izmir , really..even you can see this song in the the list of songs " Tragoudia Tis Polis/ İstanbul şarkıları / Songs of Istanbul" , plus thats not smyrnian tune... thats really constantinoplic! =)
@xyzkids27
@xyzkids27 13 жыл бұрын
@serkaneker45 Instabul=eis tin poli (you can easily see the derivation. One is Turkish the other Greek). It means to The City . City being the short name for Constantinoupolis=Constantine's City=THE CITY. It's like what bay area people say when they're headed to the city, meaning San Francisco for example.

The fact that we are people as well as that the Turks once conquered Greece cannot erase a culture and or civilization which is thousand years old. Such songs come directly from byzantine music and melodies. Check the secular or church music of medieval greece and see.

@user-qe5kh8uy9t 7 жыл бұрын
Because the Ottoman Empire's intention wasn't to erase cultures. It incorporated them, which is the reason why you can find this song in many languages.

All the Balkan peoples (Greeks, Macedonians, Albanians, Serbians, Bosnians, Bulgarians) would like to have it as own. Why? Because it is a very very beautiful song. I must dissapoint them. Üsküdara is an original Turkish song and have a lot of versions through Balkan.

@mpanitsos Of course it is greek. What the Ottoman Occupation did, is to put the greek tradition in the refrigerator. If you listen to secular byzantine music, the melody is almost identical to the traditional greek songs, especially those of Asia Minor. And if you listen to the saved ancient greek pieces of music, secular or religious, is really similar to the byzantine, that is the byzantine musical tradition is the ''daughter'' of the ancient greek. The continuity is stunning!!
