This was on a 2013 Buick Encore. It will apply to any of the Chevy 1.4t. Tiny little motors!

I have a 1.4 sonic turbo and I just replaced those vvt gaskets and they were leaking for sure. But I noticed a ton of oil residue around the water pump and thermostat. Is all that oil from the solenoid gaskets leaking? That side of my engine looks exactly the same as this one in the video

I would think so, use brake clean to clean what you can. The serpentine belt with fling oil everywhere.

Do you have a picture of the solenoid gasket you are referring to? My mom's vehicle is three hours away and it definitely has an oil leak. I noticed on my driveway when she went home. The rather sizeable drip was on the driver's side. I would have taken the plastic undercarriage tray off had I noticed it before she left. Trying to give my brother of some places to check as I'm unfamiliar with this 1.4 liter turbo personally. Mine is just oil no coolant.

The vvt on the 1.4 is a round semi flat ring. On 2.4 ecotec it's a typical O ring.

is it common for those trax variable valve camshaft timing solenoid o rings to leak. and should i replace them periodically or no.

They could leak, I would just be careful when removing or installing. Keep it lubed up. Maybe change it if it were loose. But I wouldn't remove the solenoid often unless to inspect for metal shavings.

I noticed you thoroughly cleaned the water pump mating surface. What kind of gasket did you use? I just noticed the video go from cleaned surface to water pump already mounted. Did you need to let it dry for a few minutes before putting it on or did you put it in by hand then lift it off to dry and then back on. Just curious. My mom's doesn't have the coolant leak but she does have an oil leak I think on the bottom side. I looked under the hood before she left nothing on top. Didn't see the small puddle of oil, driver's side until she got home. I'm three hours away from her. Trying to give my brother some areas to look in. Thank you. I hope to Jesus I don't have to do this job anytime soon! Quality work sir!

@@CarMechaNick Could this be an oil pan. If I remember right there's a plastic undercarriage cover that has to come off. Are there any other areas that you are aware of with these particular vehicles that are problematic as far as straight oil leaks?

These things leak all over the place. The oil filter housing, sometimes the plastic hoses break, the thermostat housing. They leak everywhere. You need to take it to a shop to have the system pressure tested.

@@CarMechaNick that is what i use mostly. or carb cleaner. preferably brake. i have a trax with some oil residue on the engine front on the corner above the ac. but its clean compared to the crankcase oil. i think it might be the dealer we got it from used. either spilled some oil when changing the oil or its residue from that engine shine crap they sprayed on it. but I'm going to wash and degrease it then remove the bottom gravel guard and place some cardboard under it after driving and check it the next morn for oil. just in case. i did watch your entire video. i have to admit i have worked auto/ marine/ bikes/ outdoor equipment most of my life. certified in marine. but these so called computers on wheels packed with unreliable junk is pathetic. boats are running a seriously close second place. the trax replaced a 2007 dodge caliber that burned a hole not in my pocket but in my azz. ending at about 2700 in parts. then i got rid of it. i wanted to complement your video and the detail you put into it. beings getting any service info is all but extinct. i have come to go on safari hunts to find simple and stupid answers for even minor repairs. even the dam oil filter on this trax could be a , hangst cover, housing who knows. its a joke to put a stupid screw cap with a oil filter cartridge. and a transmission with no replaceable filter. it is really pissin me off. then they go to a 1.4 turbo that has more power than my 2.4 equinox. when they could have just put a turbo on it. well im 61 so hopefully i make it without having to buy a energizer bunny lithium ion battery operated rubber tire piece of 40 grand junk. i pity shop techs having to go from turning wrenches to becoming electrical battery engineers as auto techs. set aside finding anyone anymore that even remotely has mechanical interest. god save this planet. mind as well just mount 4 tires on a oak tree and fred flintstone it down the road. best of luck. thanks for touching base with me. sometimes its the smallest things that matter the most. im going to do a trans flush. spent an hour looking for the full plug which i did find. my equinox was cake. this one not so much. and electric steering. give me a break. i installed electric run hydraulic manual/autopilot steering systems in powerboats that use a directional fluid valve behind the steering wheel to reverse fluid direction to a simple steering ram for over 25 years. i could count on one hand the failures i fixed. no more than a leaking fitting, corroded wire connector or owner ignorance. and cases of brake clean on boat engines. lol thanks again. if you ever run into a gas or diesel marine problem. and everything from 12 ft to 125 ft top to bottom, bow to stern. look me up. I'll be more than happy to help ya. new cars, suv,s , im still trying to learn their language. chinese wang chung junk. best of luck. and health. thanks dude.

I couldn't agree more with the screw in filter cups. I love working on cars. While electrical issues are annoying and highly frustrating they're equally as satisfying when resolved. Thanks for watching! I will for sure think of you, but hoping to only work on a pontoon boat I may possibly own in the future.

I have seen the water pumps not leak under max cooling system pressure engine off, but then leak their ass off under normal operating temp and cooling system pressure. Worst engine ever, turbo issues, cooling system issues, valve cover/pcv and intake issues, it's service life is probably only 150k to 200k miles and by then blow-by will be so bad it won't stay sealed especially considering most customers do a horrible job at making sure their oil stays clean.
@CarMechaNick
@CarMechaNick 3 жыл бұрын
Haha these things aren't great 😆. You are so right. I've had it at less than max to produce the leak before. Also have to jostle hoses around sometimes. Man you hit the nail on the head with the oil. Atleast they make the built-in valve cover/pcv a cheap part. Gotta look on the bright side right!?

here's a funny story. and i have to be convinced you already know about it. a girl that lived across the street went to work for the coke beverage co.. they gave her a new ford van to drive. she drove it a few months then went out one morning to start it. and it had zero power/ 12v. so they had to tow it. when they did the diagnostics they found that a large amount of wiring harness had been stripped but left the copper core just the insulation. they asked her if she knew anyone that might have vandalized it. due to the amount of damage done. first they thought drug addicts tried to strip out the wiring. lmao. then by coincidence it was reported as a service bulletin or something. that all the wiring ford installed was wire made with a soy base made plastic coating and the dam squirrels, rabbits, and chipmunks ate all the wire insulation off the wiring. when i first heard about it i was no you just bs,n me. I've heard a lot of bs in my life but that?. i said did you know the Easter bunny really exists and he ate it. then busted out laughing till i about pizzed myself. so i googled it. and low and behold. Newer Ford vehicles use an electrical wire coating that is a more eco-friendly, soy-based material. But maybe it's a little too eco-friendly? There's been an uptick in owner complaints about rodents using the coating as a chew toy and causing thousands of dollars in electrical damage. like they say stupid is as stupid does and that is 110% a leap before you look kind of deal. i just hope you didn't get pulled by the neck into that. god save your soul if you did.one could only hope you didn't. though it really didn't surprise me. wait till they decide to switch to beef! what next hoof mounted roller skates for horses as a eco friendly transportation. if they do we're all screwed as mechanics. its been a pleasure. just finding a person that actually has a human reaction to reply. most come back with. well, we won't go there. have a nice. wonder how many fords they did that with. i know google it! lol
