Thank you for breaking down the fuel cost. I am a retired GMC dealer and on the last day I owned my dealership I purchased for myself a 2021 GMC Sierra SLT with the 3.0. The reason I picked the 3.0 diesel over the 6.2 gas was the feedback from my customers and my service technicians. We had zero issues with these motors in the one year that they were available. Chevrolet actually had the motor in 2020 where GMC did not get it until 2021. Since April of 2021 I have driven over 40,000 miles with absolutely no issues. I make regular 900 mile trips to St Augustine Florida and I consistently get over 30 miles per gallon. Unfortunately here in Delaware there is about a $2.00 difference for diesel over regular unleaded right now. I think that difference will narrow when the weather warms up. That won't keep me from trading up to the 2023 3.0 that has more torque and horsepower. In my opinion, if you are towing anything or not, this engine is a no brainer.

I have a 3.0 turbodiesel in my 2014 Porsche Cayenne. I routinely get over 30 mpg driving at 80 mph while the EPA says 29. At 109k miles I have changed zero parts under the hood except for oil and gas filters. Driving experience is way better than gas. Diesel believer here.

I like your video. First let me say reliability has been great with my 2022 Escalade. There is no up charge for a diesel option on the Escalade. I live down south. A box of DEF fluid at AutoZone “AutoZone brand “is $11.99 Diesel fuel down here is approximately $4.29 per gallon. So those things being said, it really makes it a solid decision to go with the diesel. Towing is no comparison. Torque is 460 ft lb from just off idle all the way to almost 5k rpm! No other Diesel has this range. Mated to the 10 speed it is an unreal combo. Plus the oil belt issue really isn’t an issue. Who keeps their vehicles that long anyway? If you are one that does, it’s really not that expensive. My dealer says it will cost approximately $1500 to change the belt at 200,000 miles. If the belt goes bad you just go into limp mode. It’s not like a timing belt on an interference engine where everything gets destroyed. The engine is a straight six iron sleeve twin overhead cam design. This is the same as most popular tractor trailers etc. Peterbilt, Detroit diesel etc. it’s a tried and true design. Again the reason for going with this engine is that it is a modern diesel without all of the problems of the old school diesel engines. Smoky loud under powered boat anchors. If you drive one of these 3.0 Duramax’s you are hard-pressed to even hear the diesel sound. Most passengers have no idea they are riding in a diesel powered vehicle.

great video! i have had the chance to own both the 5.3 and the 3.0 on a z71 silverados. i have 25k miles on the diesel and still puts a smile on my face when driving, towing my boat (5500 lbs ) is no problem staying at 65mph uphill, and still getting good mpgs.

Good video comparison. I just purchased a 2020 GMC Sierra with a 3.0. Have only had it for 1500 miles. So far, I love the truck. I got 29.82 mpg driving back home from a 300-mile trip. I was really pleased. I'm a seasoned diesel owner. Two previous 6.6 Duramax Silverado's. I loved them, but diesels can have problems as they all can. The diesel problems usually happen in the exhaust which may be expensive. I purchased a warranty that covers the ruck for 5 years. Crossing my fingers. I'm hoping it will be a reliable truck for me.

IMHO, the gov has destroyed the light duty diesel option and if not for the durability and tow capability of diesel engines, they have almost destroyed the mid duty market (2500-5500) as well. We run a fleet of diesels and I love diesels. I am getting a new 1500 to go from job to job (5000-7000 miles per month). Between: 1. Fuel difference average of $1.50 2. DEF issues 3. Maintenance costs We are saving $1000-1300 per month going with gas. The initial vehicle cost is a wash at resale. We run Ram, Duramax and Ford Towing goosenecks with our 2500-5500s. The absolute number one problem after the fuel price difference for this stupid ULSD we all are forced to buy, is DEF Systems. Every single truck we have has issues after they get some miles on them and some at low miles. The stupid gov bureaucracy tried to solve 1 tiny problem and created 100 other big problems and drive up the costs of the trucks. So do I like the 3.0 light duties, absolutely and would love to run a bunch of them, but at the current state, will never ever happen. If it were not for the hauling we have to do, we would sell every single mid duty. BTW, we have issues constantly with our off-road equipment that has DEF as well. The scumbags that dreamed this crap up, should be made to by pay for it and work on it. UNCLE SAM, VEHICLE MANUFACTURERS, and BIG ENERGY, YALL are pathetic!!!!!

I bought a 2021 chevy crew cab Z71 4x4 rst standard bed 3.0 diesel. I paid 1k Xtra for the duramax. I get 34 mpg on the highway all day long. I have not had any mechanical issues & have no regrets. Love my truck

I have a 2019 Yukon XL 5.3 V8 with 4wd and tow package 3.42 axle ratio. I consistently get 23-25 mpg on my highway trips. 27.4 mpg was my best. I've driven over 600 miles with 3 gals left. My speed was 70 mph most of the trip. Here's the kicker. It was in manual 5th gear so it never ran in the V4 mode. It locks out the AFM if you use fifth gear. Rpm is 2,200 at 70 mph. The engine never switches back and forth between V4-V8. I drive it all the time in 5th gear. City and highway. I'm trying to eliminate excess wear on the hydraulic lifters.

Great breakdown. I have the 2023 Yukon Denali with this engine. You forgot to emphasize the range. I recently came back from a trip and I got 575 miles off of one fill up. Bad thing is I’m dealing with Stabilitrack issues now 😂. I think it might be due to bad biodiesel after sitting too long since it’s not my daily driver. So thanks for the fuel filter video too, going to try that.

Myks, excellent cost breakdown. I did the same research and finally got myself a 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali with a 3.0 Duramax. To my luck, I've had two check engine lights at 600 and 800 miles. This is my first diesel and GM vehicle. Hopefully, with the parts replacement, I can get as good a reliability/longevity results as others have stated. To those that want to know what code came up, it was a P0402 with an Emissions System alert on the GMC application/Diagnostics txt.

I have been driving a 2021 Silverado LT Crew Cab with the 3.0 Duramax for almost 2 years. With rear wheel drive, it's rated at 33 highway. I live in California and there is much elevation change in most trips. I regularly get 30-33 highway when driving around 70 and smooth technique. I have one of my trip odometers still running at over 18K miles, with my overall average at 26.2. Most of my driving is around town with regular freeway trips also. That's spectacular, considering that I make a lot of short trips and idle with the A/C on a lot in warmer weather. The thing that wasn't mentioned in this test, is that this 3 liter 6 cyl. diesel will waste a 5.3 at the stoplights (0-60). I've kept up with Dodge hemis and 6.2 equipped pickups. It will also keep up with or outrun the Ecoboost Fords that are known for good acceleration. I'm timing my truck in the mid to high sixes in the 0-60. What a fun and at the same time, economical truck!

I towed a donzi 22 classic up to Atlanta and then out to San Diego from naples fl. Over 6000 miles round trip. I averaged 21.9 mpg. I used approx 4 gallons of def. My gas 5.3 got 14 mpg towing the same boat.

Good job. Don't forget the ~$1,500 cost to replace the timing belt in the 3.0 at 150k miles. Regardless, I have the 3.0 and bought it after owning the 2.8L minimax in my Canyon in 2017. Still own it too.

I take my dog to work and keep the vehicle running at job site meetings with Doberman sleeping in the back. The Diesel has heavy duty everything and doesn't burn as much fuel idling. I have PPV Tahoe which is fantastic for this condition but like switch to 3.0 Suburban with nice ride quality.

Less trips to the pump is a major plus imo. I came to a Yukon Denali from a model x where I never went to the pump.

I love my 21 3.0 diesel 1500 25k miles of towing and no issues at all truck Outperform’s my 2019 5.3 on every aspect mpg and power.

I was on the fence for a long time but eventually the trim I selected (Tahoe Z71) dictated the gas engine. I chose the 6.2L for towing needs over the 5.3L. Based on miles driven per year, fuel cost differential (Premium vs Diesel), DEF charges and the higher cost of two oil changes a year, the savings was not significant enough for me to go with the Diesel though I think its a great engine. I just wish they could have fitted the 3.0L in the Z71 Tahoe.

I am in the 1 ton, ir F350 6.7 powerstroke world, but yiu should factor in cost if maintenance between gas and diesel to give more context of owning each. Great capture of metrics in just fuel and mpg data.

Great video. You can consistently find diesel for at or below regular unleaded price. You just have to explore your town. I filled up for $0.20 below regular price today. When you add that to the equation, the diesel is a no brainer

Another cost to factor in against the diesel is the fuel filters. In all of my diesels (6.7 liter Cummins, 3.0 eco diesel) you change the fuel filter every two oil changes or around 10K miles. That won't stop me from opting for the diesel. The main pro for the diesel option to me is fuel-ups are few and far between. Thanks for the video!

From a personal experience, GMC 5.3l made 130k mi and need engine replacement (valve lifter spring broke and damage everything) . So far I have 50k mi on GMC 3.0 diesel with no problem. I drive 50/50 city/highway and my average gas mileage was 14 on a diesel it’s 24 Towing my trailer with car : gas 10 mpg diesel 18 mpg going 85mph I vote diesel.

Great video. I am a big fan of of the diesel and the driving characteristics. Since you added the extra cost of the engine and DEF though, I would have added the extra cost of oil changes as well to your calcs. I don't know the 3.0l Duramax oil requirements, but I know for my wife's Cayenne diesel the oil is about $8/qt...roughly twice as much per quart plus it takes more oil than an equivalent gas engine. That alone would probably add a few thousand more dollars to the cost over 100,000 miles. That's not even touching the potential cost of expensive diesel emission systems if they fail. With that said, I still prefer the diesel.

In this case ya gotta go diesel! That 3.0 Dmax is a spectacular and super reliable diesel engine that gets great mpgs! My 3.0 out tows my 6.4 Hemi gasser and gets 5 more mpgs towing and 13 more empty! Oil changes on my 3.0 Dmax are $50 less than my 6.4 Hemi too! The 5.3 will eat the cam and lifters up! Stay away from the gasser!

Be cool if Fuel filters, and oil change difference cost was factored. I know we can't cover "All" cost. But that seemed a bit standard to add. Thank for putting this together, great watch.

I like your video! As someone has already mentioned you need to factor in maintenance costs. I'm on the fence and can't decide for a 1500 truck. The one thing keeping me away from going with the diesel is the concern with fuel quality. If you're not careful you can go to a quality fuel station and still end up with too much water. From what I've been told it is best to (mostly) go to fuel stations frequented by diesel trucks.

A great comparison video . . . have you ever checked the MPG of your vehicle with a calculator ? ( dividing it yourself ) I have found on some cars, that the stated MPG in the cars computer is a little different when I do the math myself.

Owning both... Just get the 10 speed transmission. Both engines are great. The 3.0 is a great option. Remember diesel engines will rotate less rpm to generate the same energy so the components on diesel’s generally last longer.

Gas is $2.99 diesel $4.99 here. Not saving money with our 3.0 suburban but I don't have to worry about collapsed lifters.

The price difference comes in on the extra maintenance cost to own a diesel. The sad truth is it just cost way more to maintain a diesel. I’m a diesel mechanic and have always owned hd trucks with diesel engines. For the first time in my life I bought a half ton gasser 2023 rst with a 5.3. I’ve seen 25.4 mpg best on 50 mile highway runs and 23 average highway. Def is ruining diesel engine and destroying very expensive injectors it’s not worth it unless you are towing heavy at this day and age. They just don’t make them like the 12v Cummins anymore

I also have a silverado RST 3.0. I get 6.1 litres per 100 kilometers on the hwy. Very satisfied with it. I believe that's about 35 mpg. I get 1200km or 745mi. Gerry

His experience with resale reflects what I've seen with my diesel trucks. So, he should really adjust his cost numbers because the higher price one pays for a diesel truck is returned in the resale value.

For me I am currently leasing a 2020 Silverado with a Turbo-4 in it. Mechanical wise the engine in my truck as been trouble free so far but it also barely has any miles on it. Any problems I have had have mainly been related to sensors and anything computer related. Luckily enough it was all stuff that had a recall and was replaced for free under warranty. As much as I like the 5.3 it is mainly the OLD 3rd Gen 5.3 in my previous 2004 Silverado that I liked because they were bulletproof. The later models especially the current ones are not good. I don't like the thought of my trucks engine potentially eating its' lifters while I'm just driving to the store or going to a friends house. I have one more year of my lease to go before it is up and if I decide to go with something different over staying with what I already have I was considering the 3.0 Duramax diesel. From what info I have seen about the 3.0 it has been relatively trouble free besides a hard start issue some people were originally having and the worry about the oil belt. Both of which have been fixed for the 2023 model year as GM has found a solution for the hard start problem and they reassessed the dependability of the oil belt and have upped its' mileage for when it needs changing. The DEF is usually not an issue because it's not filled as frequently as your diesel fuel is from what I know. I am also not worried about oil changes as I am already in the habit of buying the best oil and filter I can get my hands on. I can afford expensive oil and filters. I can't afford expensive engine problems if one were to happen due to junk oil. From what I've seen I think the 3.0 also comes standard with a block heater for winter use which is also nice. :)

Thank you for this comparison . I live in rural Saskatchewan Canada and have had diesel engines in my life forever. I currently own a2020 Ram longhorn EX Crew 4x4 Eco Diesel which is my second one after a 2016 . We also own a 2020 lexus RX 450 H . Most of our trips are 15 to 200 miles. The Ram always exceeded the Lexus in fuel economy 32 to 26 MPG US gal while weighing nearly twice as much We used to be always about 5 % cheaper for diesel until this last year. I really don’t understand why diesel is more expensive now other than government intervention and ??? . I’m sad to see that Ram is discontinuing the 3.0 diesel . I think this big shift to electric is way ahead of infrastructure and battery technology. Government knows best ,RIGHT !!!

My brother-in-law went from the 6.6 diesel to 6.2 gas. Then to the 5.3 and the one he liked best was 6.2 gas.

Great video, now compare how much service cost (oil change) for each vehicle. I think you will find the diesel is much more expensive.

I also do fuel efficiency comparisons with my 2021 Silverado 3.0 and my wifes 2021 Tahoe 5.3. Both are 4x4 Z71 models. I normally calculate it by each gas tank, and I calculate it by the mile. In my area, my truck at best was 17 cents a mile, and my wifes Tahoe was 22 cents a mile. Of course, understanding that the Tahoe most likely weighs 800 lbs or more than the truck. Although gas and diesel are getting cheaper, the average cost will get better. I still feel the diesel is the better choice for fuel efficiency.

More range, more longevity, saving $4000 over 20 years, and much more at a more reasonable Diesel price differential. Very interesting : )

How do the numbers hold up when you factor in the cost of oil changes and general maintenance?

Well those numbers seem realistic to my experience of owning a 3.0 but the biggest difference is I believe is the commuter everyday driving. I get 23 or better mpg everyday driving 20/30 miles a day. I’ve never gotten more the 15 mpg from a gm 5.3 in that regard. Plus this bad boy gets 16 mpg towing our Rv.

I have a 2021 Silverado 1500 with the 3.0. I absolutely love the thing. My favorite powertrain I've ever had. also with the 5.3 STILL has that stupid lifter dropping issues with the AFM junk. GM V8s are so bad with that stuff on them.

Do you have to buy def fluid for the diesel? That needs to be figured into the mpg. What about the coast of belt maintenance on the diesel?

When buying my 2024 1500 elevation, I initially wanted the 5.3 V8. I was picky of what color, package, and interior I wanted. The only engine options that was out there for what I wanted was the 3.0 diesel. I was like hey I’ll just get it and sacrifice my V8 option. And I’m glad I did! Great mpg and the fuel costs around my area isn’t as high for diesel. I’m actually saving $$$ with fewer fill ups.

Do these vehicles have to go through a regen process? I work for a fire department and our new engine has to sit outside sometimes and idle at high RPMs. I was told it has something to do with emissions.

I have put 94,000 miles on my 21 Silverado inline 6. Engine has been flawless. Def tank had to be replaced after 6 different trips to the dealer. Of course not in stock so had to wait almost 2 months with a loaner. Now the Catalitic Converter is out according to dealership. $1,400 not covered in my extended warranty. I'm averaging 24 mpg with several hundred lbs. Of tools on board. Most of those miles are going 82 mph. Still like the truck just wish I could delete the emissions system. Then it would be a GREAT truck.

Considering the maintenance cost, the oil change is higher for the diesel, however much less in parts.

My son has had two GM vehicles with the 3.0 litre diesel and he averaged way better than posted mileage. He pulls heavy trailers and it hardly affected his mileage. Average over 15000 kilometers was 8.2 liters per 100 kilometers or 28 mpg. Again that includes pulling trailers. A 5.3 liter will never be that consistent.

The elevation differential is lessened due to the engine management system being able to compensate.

I would add to your cost comparison that there is about a $90 difference in the cost of the oil change. The diesel is just more expensive. Also, don’t forget the cost of the fuel filter change as well. I own both a Tahoe with the 3.0l diesel and a Silverado 1500 with the 5.3l. Hands down the better powertrain is the 3.0l diesel for performance and the torque, but I think the cost of ownership and fueling is pretty similar.

At 4200 ft elevation could be one of the reasons for your better than stated mpg with the turbo diesel.

I’m still on fence even thought I have a 5.3 V8 already. I drive about 170 miles per day,90% of highway and never tow. Daily fuel cost is $22/day depends on I’ll go for E10 or pure gas on the day. I’ve learnt that you will pay less on fuel but you have to add up things like DEF,more expensive maintenance,insurance and even parts whenever you have to fix it. Hopefully someone could bring these all up to give us a more detailed picture

Every time I use a gas vehicle I am upset how many trips to refuel I have to make. When I drive my diesel vehicle, I have to think, when was the last time I filled this thing up.

In Houston gas is @2.89 And diesel is @4.29 Big difference My 2022 5.3 with the 10 speed Sierra gets me @25 miles per gallon going 75-80mph My father in law 2021 Denali 3.0 diesel gets him @29 miles per gallon not a big difference Where the diesel does shine is when towing a 7k trailer compared to mine

I think I may look I to a diesel engine if I decide to get a 1/2, instead of a 3/4 ton truck. Mainly because of the AFM and blowing lifters and cams in the 5.3/6.2.

I currently own a 2022 Silverado ZR2 (6.2L gas). Love the power 420 HP, like the V8 sound and it's a nice optioned loaded truck for sure. BUT,, I have towed a dual axle enclosed trailer at 70-75 with about 7k load and get 10mpg. I also tow a small toy hauler dual axle approx same weight and get less than 10mpg at same speed due to wind drag. Long story short I have ordered the 3.0 with max tow package due to a couple times headed west, didn't think I would make it to next gas station. Friend tows with LM2 about same weight and they are not even comparable, ZR2 sucking vapors and LM2 wondering why we stopped again !

ive thought about the difference between gas vs diesel, it really comes down to cost of fuel in your area and if your towing a majority of the time. yes you will get more mpg per gallon of diesel vs gas but the cost is what kills any gains. At the time when i did this comparison, gas was low $4 and Diesel was around $6. i compared a GMC Sierra 5.3 to the 3.0 and the 5.3 is what i would choose. Diesel is almost $2 more then gas here in PA, for the same price of filling up a tank of Diesel about $125 for 21gallons, filling up the gas was about $85 for 21gallons, with the difference in cost, i could us that remaining $40 and buy nearly another 9-10gallons of gas. This would give me the ability to driver more miles in the 5.3 than the 3.0 while spending the same amount of money at the pump. con would be having to fill up more for gas but your going farther for the same $. Take into consideration, theres also more costs associated with Diesel - Def Fluid and most people forget the diesel engine costs more then the 5.3, but less then the 6.2. as i said, it comes down to personal preference, for me and what i would use a truck for, it wouldnt make sense to go with the diesel.

Unfortunately I got one of the bad lifter problem engine. Both the 5.3 and the 6.2 engines have the lifter problem. And the crappy way GM addressed the problem by just replacing one bank of lifters at a time, was completely inadequate. After the third bank of lifters were replaced before the vehicle had 18,000 miles on it . Does the desiel have any lifter problems?

Wasn’t sure if you factor in cost of fuel filter and cost for oil changes also the 100k belt replacement in the rear of the engine which on average is $1200 for that service by dealership

Great input from all of these comments. Thank you. Have never owned DEF, yet am leaning that way with the Tahoe. Plan to do extended driving with many long trips from 500-1000 each. The psychological factor plays a big part here for me. Knowing that there is the strong potential to get 50% more MPG makes the case all the more towards the Duramax. BTW, as of today in the flyover states of IL/IN, there is about a $.70 price difference more for DEF. Good luck to all in making the right choice for your needs.

DEF is about 7/gallon now, and you have much higher routine maint costs with the diesel; fuel filters and more expensive oil. I am about to decide on the 3.0 vs 6.2 gas and am really leaning gas. Seems like a lot of additional issues to run these diesels even beyond cost.

I prefer the simplicity of a gas. Less chance of issues for me. My truck pulls my 8500 lb boat no sweat. But to each their own.

I'd recommend the second gen variant of this motor. On this version you have remove the transmission to change the timing chain/belt @ 150k miles

In the Escalade and my AT4 Sierra, the 3.0 is actually less than the gas engine (6.2L)

I’m a fan of the diesel and excited to maybe own one some day. However….. the statement of diesel more reliable then the gas I feel might be miss guided. Maybe once it’s deleted but with all the emissions BS one a diesel over a gas I would be prepared for some large repair bills in the the D. The oil pump drive belt at the rear of the engine requires the transmission to be removed to replace it every 150,000 miles The cost of doing this is approximately USD$1300 (parts and labour)

Also maintenance on fuel filter costs and the oil cost more ,,, plus at 100,000 miles the oil pump belt needs replacing at approximately 1200.00-1500.00 dollars have to remove transmission to replace,,, add that to the next 100,000 miles !!!

Biggest problem for me was that the exhaust system isn't included in any extended warranty regardless of the company. After 36,000 miles, you're on your own. There's just too much $$$ at risk for some random exhaust issue. Many common issues run in the thousands of dollars to fix. Love the engine, but hate the exhaust requirements.

You forgot the cost of changing the OIL PUMP located inside the crankcase. With a 4x4 like I have they have to take the front end apart in order to drop the oil pan to get to the pump. BIG BUCKS in labor not to mention the cost of the pump and the alignment of the front end when it is finished. Also, the 3.0 takes SPECIAL OIL and every oil change which I do myself, costs $93.00 for the filter and oil from Amazon.

I have had my 3.0 Silverado for just over a year and love it. I have gotten just over 38 mpg on a 50 mile average but was actively trying to see how good I could get it. Normal interstate is 28-33 mpg. If you don't take trips of 50-70 miles at least a couple of times a month the diesel is not for you it must be driven on decent trips every so often to allow the DEF to do its job. So if this is for trips to the store it is not for you. One calculation you failed to show is value when you trade it in. Normally diesel motors hold a better price so that 900 at the start will be paid back unless the motor turns out to be a dud.
