In this video action steps and procedures necessary to replace in service the rear differential in a 2014 or 2018 GM vehicle. The vehicle shown in this video is a 2014 Chevy Silverado 2wd and is equipped with the 5.3l engine. GM recommends you will replace the fluid in these differentials every 30,000 miles. Especially if you’re doing a lot of towing or if you have big off-road tires. I was given good advice and will pass it on….Always break loose the fill plug FIRST before you let all the oil out. If it is rusted in place or damaged preventing removal, it’s a bad time to figure that out once all the oil is drained.

There is a magnet that sits on the bottom of the diff under the ring gear.its glued in place

Just changed mine thanks, i tried the hose and pump, I found it easier to squirt it in using the squirt bottle. If your oil does not come with squirt cap use a generic condiment bottle

You will need a hose for the front diff tho because of its location. Just a heads up.

You missed the most important part. You never cleaned out inside the bottom of the diff housing where all the dirt and break in filings sit.

My 2014 GMC Sierra owners manual calls for 75W-85 GM synthetic. I see that you are using 75W-90 Lucas. I assume this would work, but not the GM spec. Thank you for making this video. Very well done!

75w-90 is an appropriate alternative to what you stated as what you stated is hard to find and expensive. It was just a little bit to give that .05% more fuel mileage.

I found that there was plenty of room back there to just tip the bottle up and squirt it in. It is about 3 Quarts of gear lube. The transfer case has both a drain and fill plug. I used the specialty oil ftom the dealer for that one. Plenty of room to just tip the bottle up and squirt it in. It is 2 quarts. The front differential however was a P.I.T.A. There us both a drain and fill plug on the drivers side of housing. You do need a pump for filling it. 2 quarts gearlube.

Why don't you spray the gears with brake cleaner and wipe down since you are changing from factory gear oil to the better amsoil? Woukd this cause an issue with anything?

That's correct. Leave the gasket unmolested, unless you have reason to check for wear.

I personally wouldn't use it, just because it could cause the gasket to dry up, I would use mineral spirits or a specific cleaner for gaskets.

Why not just crack the cover loose to let old fluid drain out, then tighten cover back up. Then fill with new?????

You want to clean the gasket, differential cover, and mating surfaces for the gasket

The differential will say on top of the actual diff it’ll say 9.5” or 8.6” and n12 for being 12 bolts holding the back cover of the diff

Or you can call dealer parts dept. And give them vin number and they will verify what rear end and gears you have in your truck.

Buddy you just look on the right hand side of the diff standing from the back of the truck(passenger side from the back)......stamped on right hand side of the diff.....make sure and use some permatex red threadlocker on the diff bolts when you do it.I noticed where they had used some on mine when i took it apart yesterday....i didnt reapply any red threadlocker tho and mine is not leaking but just telling you about it...just to let you know.....tourque em to 15ftlbs first then go back and tighten each bolt an additional 20 degrees (barely under a quarter turn pretty much)...take care Bud

The info shoud be on the glovebox door.If g80 is shown, then you have a locker diff
