habits are the most educational chess series online imo. Aman gets the right amount of education - not too little as Eric, not overloading with irrelevancy compared to for instance Levy. And he is entertaining - both Eric and Aman are, unlike any other chess KZfaqr IMO, but I like Aman's humor better. I still chuckle when I recall him referring to taking the knight with a bishop as "premature ejaculation" instead of keeping the pin

I've studied my fair share of opening theory (not that it has helped me much tho) but the simple and concise teaching using speedruns has made me shift my openings around to what you play on them. It is nice that you don't quickly rattle off 10 different variations every move so it is easier to follow for those of us under 2000.
@WhiteWolfiee
@WhiteWolfiee Жыл бұрын
Precisely, memorization is usually for very specific variation or lines that GM's play, or critical theory (for example Evans Gambit lines) but around club level it is MUCH more important to learn concepts and ideas, instead of the exact moves. As most GM's say, when you're below 2000, don't memorize openings, instead understand what they are doing. I have many times in club play known openings and when looking back on stockfish had +1 or +1,5 positions that I've lost or drawn because I didn't have ideas after moves 15-20.

I was once out shopping in St. Louis with my mom. We went into a grocery store for a couple of things and were just about go to the checkout when a loud grunt made us turn around. At first, neither of us were able to spot the source of the sound, and the other people around looked just as confused as us. Then came another grunt, even louder than before. Mom gave me a worried look. I wanted to say something reassuring to calm her nerves, but I was too focused on trying to spot the location of the sound. It had come from one of the shelves near us. I spotted unusual movement. People close to one of the shelves were throwing themselves out of the way. Another grunt. I recognized the voice. Then I saw him. Flying out into our lane, sitting crouched up in a shopping cart with beer stacked around him. Eric. Aman came running after the cart and grabbed hold of it right before it crashed into another shelf. ‘It’s him,’ Eric grunted, pointing straight at me. ‘Me?’ I exclaimed. ‘Do you know my son?’ Mom asked, with a slight shiver in her voice. ‘It’s him,’ Eric grunted again, still pointing straight at me. ‘Are you sure?’ Aman asked. ‘Yes! Get him back into his starting position.’ What happened next I still only remember in fragments. My therapist says it’s gonna take a long time, but that it’s unfortunately normal for traumas of that kind. Eric jumping out of the cart. Mom grabbing my hand. The running. The catching up. The way they grabbed us. The screaming and the grunting. And the repetition of those horrible words. “Get him into his starting position. Get him into his starting position.” Not one night has passed since without me screaming those horrible words to pull me out of another nightmare. Don’t support these guys.

@@WhiteWolfiee I feel like Levy is more like an Entertainer, he is still not a GM and like the Botez sisters he is more caught off in “creating fast consuming content”. Aman on the other hand is a GM, he knows Chess not only for KZfaq but also for tournaments and the pure enjoyment of teaching it. That’s why Chessbrah video last 30-40 minutes, and Levy focuses on shorts. And I feel I learned much more on Chessbrah content than on Levy’s one. I love watching Levy’s videos to entertain myself, not to learn

you said that the setup with e6 and g6 didn't make sense in game 1 because of the dead bishop, but game 2 you played a similar setup with e3 and g3. Maybe you should explain for the lower rated players why it makes sense for white in this case, because white's dark-squared bishop in g2 was as dead as black's light-squared bishop in g1.

I love the English opening. One of the best parts about it is that, with white, you can play the first three moves exactly the same every game regardless of what your opponent plays (c4, g4, Bg3) and you have a huge chance of winning because almost no one at the lower levels ever plays against it.
