Thank you so much for these Hippo speedrun videos. They are excellent. About 2 weeks ago, The Chess Giant did a Hippo week series of YT videos. I would be very interested in seeing some games of both you and The Chess Giant playing Hippo games. That would be awesome, and probably the first such chess games posted on YT. Two good players, each playing the Hippo, or maybe one of you playing something other than the Hippo, because they think they have a good way to play against the Hippo. And I really don't care, interesting as it might be, if neither of you takes the time to do an analysis of your Hippo games, because those games just by themselves, would be so interesting to see.

@0:34 8.Qd2 - Any Hippo player knows with a bishop on e3, 8...h6 is needed. So maybe you forget, then after 9.Bh6 any Hippo player knows 9...0-0 and wait for White to take Bxg7 then ...Kxg7. But you are better off to keep the DSB with ...h6. Good thing Eric is a GM so he could still win the game against a 1600+ player after this blunder. @8:33 he's learning!

I'm new to chess and have been learning systems for only a few months now and my elo reflects my experience. My question is why is this system looked at as a novelty or a joke opening? I find it very resourceful and while it uses what seems to be a semi-closed position at times, it still seems to have some depth and sound theory. It may be basic but I think what you've demonstrated is that even at a higher elo it can be a sound simple-to-learn viable opening. I'm curious to see how high you can take it. Great series! thanks. I enjoy watching.
@mdoebs5946
@mdoebs5946 Жыл бұрын
I don't think it's thought of as a joke, but I do think that people look down on "system" openings, because they think it's an indication of a lack of tactical vision and talent. That may or may not be true, but who cares? It's off beat yet tactically solid, which is more than enough for elo advancement in blitz.

Would you like a couple of tips to hit 1500? 1. Play Daily games (up to ~5 concurrently). 2. Never move without >=5 minutes study of consequences. 3. Consider 3 alternate lines to a depth of 3 moves each. 4. Do >=30 minutes of puzzles daily - time is unimportant, accuracy is everything. 5. Study few openings, but go in depth. 6. Have fun!
