This dusty "blast from the past" 1988 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera isn't having a good day.
Join me for a quick "in the field" diagnosis...raw and uncut :)
Special thanks to "Big Al" of "Big Al's Garage", located somewhere deep in the Central PA countryside...

I knew what was wrong with the car before you started the diagnosis. After owning a half dozen iron dukes over the years, this is one of the most common problems.

Glad you shared this. This is hands down the easiest way to check the output from the module to the coils and GM used this sort of system for many yrs and nearly all of their FWD cars. I think the only thing I would've added was to check secondary coil ohms preferably hot, because I've seen them break down and take out a module several times before.. Just sayn. Good vid!

Great video thanks for sharing My 94 Ciera 3.1 liter gave me fits for almost two years, finally found out it was the wiring harness from the electronic control module to the 2nd Cam Position Señsor on the backside of the motor. Replaced everything else in the process of getting to the bottom of this problem. So now I have an excellent running car, as if there was never a problem. Love these old Oldsmobiles. Thanks again for a great video.

It's nice to see a good simple video on fundamentals! A lot of the time, you can track a problem down using these simple, effective techniques, even on newer vehicles. Definitely a good reminder that you don't always need top of the line equipment. Great video Ivan. Thank you!

It's a waste spark system right? How could a faulty module that isn't putting out spark on 1 coil not show up as a 2 cylinder misfire? Did they not realize it wasn't putting out spark on 2 towers? Neat module test though thank you for showing that. I see where Al was going with the crank sensor on a 1 cylinder waste spark misfire. If he would have caught that it was actually a 2 cylinder misfire it probably would have clicked for him. Excellent diagnostic.
@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics
@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics 9 жыл бұрын
+DJDevon3 Great question. The way they checked for spark was with that strobe timing light, which was actually flashing on every plug wire (including the dead ones!) because it was picking up the pulses from the neighboring ones!! I assumed they used an inline spark tester...bad assumption on my part. I was honestly surprised it ran at all on only two cylinders!! A crank sensor issue can be ruled out since one coil is firing great, so the input to the module can be assumed to be correct.

Did you check the Harmonic Balancer Ring? I have seen some given spark just on two cylinders! The ring come loose and gets to close to the Crack sensor, eliminating the signal on that spot only! You should check the crank signal just to be safe! Specially on a 1988!
@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics
@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics 9 жыл бұрын
+Maic Salazar This system is kind of goofy...the crank reluctor ring is inside the crankcase right on the crankshaft! It would have been interesting to scope the crank waveform coming from the module to the ECM though :)

Absolutely! For electrical stuff, ScannerDanner is a very good one :) Ivan (MotoYam82; as in this guy) also has several good vids on that subject, but for pure electrical diagnostics, ScannerDanner is a good choice! Excellent teacher. I would also highly recommend the channel SouthMainAuto with Eric O. (These guys are all freinds btw ;) ) They are all excellent, I watch them all the time and learn tons of stuff, especially when it comes to electrical. Schrodingers Box is another one I watch quite a lot, very insightful, and also a good teacher when it comes to understanding how the different things work, and how to diagnose! (If you can tolerate his, uhm, "confident behaviour" - it's worth it though ;) )

How did you test the ignition control module? Did you connect one end of the alligator connector to the test light and the other end to the control pins on the module?
@adamtrombino106
@adamtrombino106 5 жыл бұрын
He simply connected the lead of the test light to B- to test for power at the coil inputs from the module KOEO, then moved the test light lead to B+ to test for coil triggers, at the module, KOEC. The ign. mod pulses the ground to the coil, thus the flashing light. If you have an easily accessible coil on ign module car, you could do this across the 2 coil pins ( coils removed) once you know you have keyed power from the module, with your high impedance test light or a rigged up NOID light.

Ivan. Have you ever seen a 2007 Chevrolet silverado with hard transmission shifts from first to second. The Chevrolet dealer told my customer that the fuel pump was the problem. Pressure is over 90 psi and vehicle is in fail safe mode. I got to make a call on it tomorrow

motoYam82 You can't only use a timing light for a misfire. It's not a bad idea as a quick check but if you get used to that bad habit it will bite you eventually, case in point.

+FDSeoul San Diego Same thing happens to ScannerDanner when he does mobile videos sometimes. Most of the time the shops he helps are respectful enough of ScannerDanners knowledge to be quiet and pay attention so they can learn something too. Ivan hasn't earned their respect yet is all, Ivan was obviously the young buck in that shop. I'm sure this victory for him just earned their respect. More great diagnostics like this will help him get the word out eventually.

+DJDevon3 You notice that both of the Eric from ETCG and South Main make the necessary edit to keep out the cussing and yapper from their vids. One of the viewer brought up a great point about how they watch the videos with their children as entertainment and education and the last thing they want is the hear cussing in their vids while trying to learn and teach their sons and daughters. I think a little effort goes a long ways. Just my own opinion.

What do you think about vehicle being in limp mode or fail safe where it raises the Trans line pressure
@rrmech11
@rrmech11 9 жыл бұрын
Ok today fuel pressure was taken at the rail confirmed its at 90 psi. Fuel pressure sensor read 2.8 volts. Where it should of read 5 volts with the actual present reading. So I went to schepel GMC and purchased a new fp sensor for 42 pesos. Big improvement. But Ivan once the stability light comes on hard 1-2 shift again. Light goes off for an hour then on. Keep you posted. New code after fp sensor replacement po69e. And po191. Original codes were po172 and po175. Po175 diminished .
