The Sicilian Defense: Alapin Variation is a chess opening that begins with the moves 1. e4 c5 2. d3. This variation is named after the Russian chess master Semyon Alapin, who popularized the move 2. d3 as a response to 1... c5 in the Sicilian Defense. The idea behind this variation is to control the center of the board and to prepare to develop the pieces harmoniously, while avoiding some of the more complex and sharp lines that can arise from other Sicilian Defense variations. By playing 1. e4 d5 2. c3 c5, White establishes a solid positional foundation and puts pressure on Black's central pawn on d5, while also preparing to castle kingside and to develop the knights and bishops.

My favourite Danyaism is: "I know of a game where this happens; I'll show you after the game", and he actually does. Bless this under-viewed educational superpower. Chess lectures at their absolute peak. Thank you Daniel.

His superpower is not exactly teaching chess. He teaches how to think tactically and strategically through the chess. Neither Hikaru nor even Magnus do that at this level. Maybe they just don't want to, I don't know.

One of my favourite parts is where Daniel discovers a beautiful checkmate in an obscure sideline (ie 31:53) and can't help but share it with the rest of us. And it was an extremely nice mate! There's a couple of examples in the pawn endgame series as well where he covers the insanely deep lines that even the engine doesn't see until it is too late.

I have been Thoroughly enjoying this speed run. It is a little more inline with my openings. I can win a two on one and hold a one on two. I like fighting on the c file. I like a fianchetto king. So I play catalan, grünfeld, and dragon(though I have been playing more tiamonov lately (just enjoying the games more)). Still, there is more in this speed run for me than most. So, thank you.

Wonderful content once again!🙏 Response to GM Danya’s comment at 20:02… imho as an old beginner this series is going over basic opening logic, and not simply rehashing a vague set of “opening principles” that at best compete for priority and at worst lead to basic inaccuracies.

I think my biggest issue at the moment is I don’t calculate ahead often (I play mostly on the phone and can’t use arrows), meaning a lot of ideas I employ end up failing despite how I feel like they should’ve worked. I’m not sure if there’s some sort of technique to practice this kind of thing to make it a habit or second nature

love your vids, and this one beautifully used pinned pieces and fork threats. Just a tip, don't say things like "the move is *of course*" and "everybody should see this". They may discourage lower rated players who don't see what you're talking about, but can still learn a lot from these games

I do this too and sometimes ive seen +2 advantage go to 0. But its a lesson- the positions he gets in to are so difficult for the opponent to play, that unless they make really accurate engine moves he will gain back the advantage due to the position nature of his play in the speedrun
