"Shares of General Motors opened for trading at $39.63 on the day Barra took over as the CEO of the company. An investment in the company at the time would represent a return of 21.3%. For comparison, the SPDR S&P 500 ETF (NYSE: SPY), which tracks the S&P 500 Index, returned 176.1% over the same time period. Tesla has been the leader in electric vehicle production in the U.S. and its shareholders have been rewarded. Most people don’t understand how hard it is to build software. Even the people who are leaders in software industry struggle with it everyday. You can’t design it, you can’t prototype it, it’s continuously evolving, hard to maintain, becomes obsolete in matter of months. With the amount of software in future cars, very hard for companies to survive who aren’t software engineering as core competency.

The "Design Center" referenced is a large addition to the 1950s original on the campus of the General Motors Technical Center in Warren Michigan. That space was previously a parking lot for employees. Originally the space was used as a backdrop for publicity photography for new cars... with light poles and manicured trees in an almost courtyard setting. The 1950s through 1970s era was GM's pinnacle of design leadership. Numerous classic vehicles were produced such as the Tri-Five Chevrolets, 1961 Impala, 1963 Riviera, 1963 Corvette, 1965 Coupe deVille, 1967 Camaro, 1971 Grand Prix, 1976 Seville, 1979 Riviera, etc. Then GM design went downhill in the 1980s and 1990s with the 1984 Deville, 1986 Eldorado, 1990 Lumina, 1992 Caprice Classic, "Dustbuster" minivans, Pontiac Aztek, etc. ...vehicles openly mocked for bad design. Mary Barra has turned around GM and made it profitable on a per unit basis... and she wisely dumped the money losing Opel, Vauxhall, and Holden brands. But the result now is a much smaller share of the American market...from once over 40 percent to approximately 16 percent.

I've never owned a new American car, and in my search for a replacement vehicle I've driven several EVs in the last few weeks. The Blazer EV is the one I can't get out of my head. I had avoided it due to the somewhat overt styling elements inside and out (which I'm getting used to). But the content for the money and materials quality as well as the control layout really impressed, as did the strong AC front and back, and the solid, refined feel of the car on the road. I drove the base 288 hp, 279 mi range model. This is the first American-branded car I've considered in years (not counting the occasional thoughts of an F-150 that I really don't need). Great car.

GM killed every electric car they ever made, from the first EV-1 that they refused to sell at even twice the manufacturing cost, and they were offered 1 million for one of their EV-1's and turned it down. To the Volt that now has a tailpipe, to the Bolt that went up in flames, and how does that not remind them of the Ford pinto, at least Ford dumped the name and car entirely. Until they fire every electrical engineer at GM, they will always fall short of reliable. Until GM roots out all in their staff and on their bord that are tied to big oil and willing to sacrifice the company for their own profits, GM will always fall short in profits. If (when) we do finally have flying vehicles, make sure that they can transition into driving in traffic on the street. Flying vehicles - unless some Star Trek level no-dust-stirred-up-by-downdraft technology is developed - will not be allowed to land just anywhere. Most of the flying vehicles being developed today are essentially drones, and they have significant downdraft that will be the focus of MANY lawsuits if they try to land these things on regular city streets where people are walking around. There will need to be "landing zones" for the flying vehicles where they then transition to drive on the street like normal land cars.

GM also said that they'd catch up to Tesla and manufacture 1M EVs annually by 2025. GM thought Tesla would be standing still, but Tesla produced 1.84M in 2023. GM sold less than 17K EV in Q1 2024, and they're cutting back on production. I'll be surprised if GM even produces 100K EVs in 2025, let alone 1M.

I crashed my Toyota Echo. It may seem like that has nothing to do with GM or its future, but if Mary and her team don't keep in mind their role in the car market as a whole, they're going to have a tough time in the future. They need to improve their affordability and quality, so that they can have a strong used car market that advertises for their new cars. A strong used car market is what makes Toyota, Honda, and Subaru so successful. The car segment is shrinking every year because GM and Ford decided to focus on crossovers, trucks and SUVs instead. It's only a matter of time before people are no longer able to find an affordable proper car for their daily needs.

@@danielzhang1916 The average sale price of a car in the US is over $47K. Some Tesla Model 3 and Model Y are below the average sale price, before the $7,500 rebate. "GM is up like 12% in the last ten years” - Lots of reasons for that, from overseas markets being unprofitable, to losing money on sedans and compacts for 25 years in a diminishing market, to poor reliability in comparison to Japanese vehicles long ago. Can’t pay UAW workers what should be because $120 billion of debt from the last 40 years. “We’ll go bankrupt…” , yeah because of poor design decisions and quality perception from 1996. I’ll give Mary a break on all of this - she wasn’t making the decisions that led to all of this, and I respect her for recognizing what GM needs to do to turn it around. The buybacks are some evil greed type stuff tho, Mary. So, anyway I look forward to see the new revolutionary vehicle designs and bold moves that’ll make Sandy Munro smile. Move on from the mistakes of the past, like 96 Chevy Blazer, and Lumina or 2002 Monte Carlo or Impala, or the Avalanche - I guess GM isn’t making any sedans anymore but what I’m saying is choose better visually appealing designs, (the new Colorado looks nice) better handling and suspension (teslas doing it) we all want to see GM thrive, you can do it Mary.
