Actually, there's an on-going discussion as to this part of the history of the archipelago, and as regards the name given to it which foreign dynasties of the time recognise. It is said that the Northern part of the archipelago was called Lu Song (after the Tondo-based dynasty known as Lu Song) which covered territories as far as Tondo to Pangasinan including Pampanga (and probably further and wider). It is believed that Lu Song Dynasty of Tondo originated from the ancient Song Dynasty of China (thus the name "Lu Song") and was one of the most powerful dynasties in the archipelago, repelling the Spanish invasion for a brief period before it was destroyed probably due to some of it's chieftains giving in to the Spaniards. Lu Song is where we get the Hispanic name Luzon. These are further detailed in the history of the Baybayin Script of the archipelago, a form of writing believed to have existed for more than 4000 years. When the Castilas arrived (after Magellan) a friar noted that every man, woman and child in the islands were lietrate and were able to read and write (Baybayin), aside from the fact that everyone was wearing gold on their bodies. It was also noted that Islam was already present in the islands. (I am of the opinion that not all the islands and tribes were converted to Islam because the friars noted that some tribes practised paganism and were into ancestral worship, just like the Chinese, and they kept idols which they called "Anito"). This being said, I am of the opinion that the Sultan of Sulu was not in control of the entire archipelago, North to South, East to West. There is also the undeniable fact that the Sri Vijaya (of Java) and Majapahit Empires colonised much of the archipelago. The Sri Vijaya at the time of the Ming Dynasty was pushed further South settling in the Visayan group of islands (thus the name Visaya after "Vijaya"). In some Ming anals, it was recorded that a very fierce group of people whose men were covered in tattoos, who the Ming branded as sea pirates for raiding their merchant vessels so frequently that they became a Ming headache. The Ming called them "Pi-sha-ya". Sounds like "Bisaya", right? These fierce people couldn't have been moros or muslims because it is considered haram (forbidden) to cover oneself up with tattoos. They were most likely remnants of the Sri Vijaya culture, which is affiliated to Hinduism. In conclusion, it can be said that during the Ming Dynasty era, our archipelago was ruled by Hinduism/paganism in the South, Mindanao was Islamic (with many tribes retaining shamanism/animism) while the North was Buddhist/pagan(?) until the Castilas forcefully converted the natives to Roman Catholicism, the religion of Imperial Spain. (I apologise if I mentioned some details incorrectly, these details can be googled with resources that include our modern day historians such as Xiao, etc.)
