Great video. We usually use 90/10 Ar/CO2 for spray. Just FYI, for the GMAW application, AWS 5.17 ( mentioned at 1min 22 sec.) is technically for Sub Arc welding. The appropriate AWS Specification for this application is AWS A5.18 (Specification for Carbon Steel Electrodes and Rods for Gas Shielded Arc Welding)

Very informative video! Definitely being added to my training playlist. Personally, using Argon/Oxygen mixes in the past I was never a fan of. Every ASME vessel we would X-ray at my previous job, when we would use 98/2, there would be some porosity on the X-ray. It passed the code requirements, but none the less it was there. Didn’t get that with 90/10.

I like your hats man. I buy evey houndstooth pattern welder's hat I come across. I also like axial spray transfer, I like the quiet hiss that it makes and the lack of spatter provided you've got enough arc length and don't puddle dive the electrode. I think you could have dropped down a volt or so and stayed in spray and gotten a bit more puddle control, but I'm just being an armchair qb at this point. I enjoy your content man, thanks for the contribution.

Hey Dad, Spray Arc and Globular have been around pretty much the whole time as 'MIG' GMAW.....lots of experimentation with different gases over the years, in my 1972 Lincoln Handbook or Arc Welding, it is covered in there very well, you need to get one of these books if you do not have, they are 30 bucks from the James F Lincoln foundation....a non profit educational outfit, and it is a book of over 800 pages,,,,,by the way, the Hobart Brothers back in the 1920's came up with the idea of flux core, but the technology at the time did not allow the manufacture of flux core wire, I hope this helps, and thanks so much for watching uncommenting, best wishes, Paul

Due to health reasons I been out of the game for about 13yrs. so my exact settings and/or measurements may a lil off as I've forgotten quite a bit. When I welded for a structural steel company we used 80/15 with .045 on everything from 16ga to 1.5". In the vid he said you couldn't weave a spray, why not,I was on the work I did mentioned below. The butt joints in the 3/4" to 1" plate I'd fill with the short then finish it off with the spray to make a perfectly clean stacked weld within their 1/8" height tolerance. These were 1.5-2" wide bevels and they would come out perfect using a moderately slow O weave. It's been a good while so here's where my settings may be off some.I think I set the voltage for spraying at 28 or 28.6 and wire feed somewhere up around 300-320 (sound about right?). What I really hated there was welding 3/16 mounting brackets to the 16ga cold rolled with the .045 and 85/15.No one else was able to do it without blowing the hell out of it,actually only a couple of guys there were any good at horizontal welding period.None of them could even do overhead let alone try vertical up or even down, these guys even went to trade schools for welding....

Zeke, thanks for watching and commenting, Come on down to the weld lab and show us how it's done with only one setup and no testing for only one video take, and on a machine we had never used.....we used the SWAG method if that helps...... So you are saying the sample at 11:06 is not smooth? done with 92/8 ar-co2 ? Do you weld with 95/5 ar-o2 like in the sample at 10:35? that is extremely hot and fluid? Do you ever do vertical welds with axial spray transfer like at 10:45? let us know, we would love to see your results. Sincerely, Paul

Never oscillate a mig weld, it can lead to an inconsistent fusion profile internally, if you need a bigger weld turn up the WFS rather than weave, all roads lead to spray, short circuit is not allowed on a lot of structural codes, if you can spray spray it’s better in every way, 75/25 is almost never the answer, if you are short circuiting with 75/25 anything 3/16 or more you are making a mistake, thin material or gaps is the only time you should use it, and yes 75/25 on fluxcore is fine, but fluxcore isn’t always the best option either, that’s a talk for another day, I’ll be happy to answer any intelligent questions anyone has, but will not argue with any set in stone facts stated above

@@peetky8645 the best way to determine anything is to cut and etch it yourself and see if you are getting adequate fusion and penetration, rather than taking someone’s opinion, there’s a set of concepts like I mentioned before but there’s always an exception somewhere, that being said I would probably say you could run that much voltage, but I don’t believe you’d actually NEED that much voltage, it may take me a while but next chance I get I’ll test it myself and post a video showing the results
