GMC Chevy Variable Assist Power Steering Repair - Variable Assist Delete

I recently replaced a power steering pump on a GMC Yukon XL after it came in with the complaint of no power assist (power steering). the following day the customer contacted me and explained that the power assist would sometimes fade while at highway speeds. After some quick checking I decided to do what I should have in the first place and deleted the variable power assist entirely. Removing the variable assist system can be accomplished a couple different ways and ill give you a quick rundown of what you need and what works best in each case. This video tip is relevant to both Chevy and GMC cars, trucks and SUV's including Chevy Silverado, Chevy Tahoe, GMC Sierra, Yukon, Cadillac Escalade and other GM vehicle equipped with the infamous variable assist power steering system. This video will also be helpful for those simply wanting instruction for replacing the power steering pumps on these vehicles with or without the variable assist option. Watch this video for more information.

One of my favorites on KZfaq, the Car Doctor with another awesome video. Thanks a bunch. I ordered the control valve bypass part at O'reilly's to get it the fastest way for the snowstorm coming. They don't keep them in stock around here. My sensor was so corroded with rust and oxidation that it crumbled apart. And there's no way to order a new sensor. So, this should save my bacon.

TIM THANK YOU FOR THIS GREAT VIDEO, my 2002 GMC Yukon Has this Variable Assist system , and I couldn’t find any information on this STUPID ATTACHED system, on all the KZfaq video’s I’ve watched. So I bought kit, replaced it with the new kit, also the little hose bracket that fell off when disassembling and pulling the pump bracket out I couldn’t figure out where it came from till YOU SHOWED EXACTLY WHERE IT WENT, so THANK YOU SIR. I know right I'm watching it now hoping I can find out if I have to buy a new hose also with the Evo delete kit or if I just need the evo delete kit.. So basically I'm wondering if the old hose will fit in the u-shape Evo delete tube. And also to see if I have to take the pump off it looks like I can sneak up in there and take the evo out without removing everything

The kit is for keeping your original hose. If you have to replace the hose anyway get one for the older trucks that didn't have the EVO, then this kit is not needed as the older hoses have the loop built in.

I just picked up a 98 Silverado and two hours after I bought it I lost my power steering it was pissing fluid everywhere got up underneath it and found someone had recently put a new high-pressure line in it but they cross threaded the shit out of the threads in that dog bone piece and I can’t find a replacement anywhere.So I did some research And found my only option is to get rid of that EVO solenoid and put that little U-shaped adapter to do away with the Evo system altogether that’s how I found this video which confirmed that’s my only option in this case thank you for making this video!

I had a 97 gmc sierra that had the variable assist steering and it went bad on the highway ! It's a weird feeling because when it failed it went full assist wich feels like the steering wheel lost its connection to the wheels! It doesn't actually lose connection but it feels like it! The result is the slightest touch of the steering puts you in the next lane !! I simply replaced the pump with a non assist pump and the problem went away. Funny enough there is a "tsb" on it. But my truck was too old for the free fix from the dealer.

I have a 2004 Yukon XL Denali. I had what I thought was a failed brake hydroboost brake booster. I have horrible vibrating and pulsing in both the steering wheel and the brake pedal. I have replaced the hydroboost brake booster and still have the same vibration/pulsating in the wheel and brake pedal. I had the power steering pump replaced previously but that is my last guess for the issue. Do you think I have a bad power steering pump? After replacing the brake booster and both wheel speed sensors I have the same issue as when I started. Assuming my next step is to replace the power steering pump again.

So, I have a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix GT2, and I'm thinkin I'm havin a similar issue. A dashboard reading says Service Varialbe Effort Steering along with the Brake Light being on with an additional Service Brake System reading. I notice a tighter feel on the steering wheel, and I sometimes start my car and these readings take a minute before they appear. Also, after replacing both front wheel bearings, all 4 rotors, and all brake pads, I have a Service Traction Control reading as well as a Service ABS Brake System reading that I know stems from the front passenger side wheel bearing speed sensor, or more directly what that sensor connects to coming from the car. The positive wiring that goes into the connector coming from the car doesn't click firmly into position and may be throwing things off. I certainly need that connector repaired. If any professional and certified mechanic wouldn't mind, please advise me on what steps to take first in repairing my Pontiac. Truthfully speaking, I love the car and have had it for 3 years now, and would like to get it ready for the Winter season now. Any advice is appreciated!

Curious so what was the complaint after you changed the pump? Often its the speed and position sensor on the steering column that fails as dirt and hair gets in causing incorrect inputs. When it goes you'll notice steering into a corner pump will increase pressure suddenly giving a loose feeling. When the variable system works right it does a good job. Many people over look service to ps system and never change fluid. A filter on the system in the 3/8" return line helps keep debris out of valve.

Removal just makes the steering assist system less complicated and prone to failure. It was a bad system to begin with and not sure why anyone would keep it. Most people feel the assist is more responsive after removal of the system. When the manufacturer recommends disabling a system and makes a kit for it you know theres a problem.

I had the exact same problem with my 97 Sierra, couple weeks later and the power steering went completely, I installed a new pump and good as new but I’m currently installing the u shape line because the old one was leaking.

 @The Car Doctor What are the symptoms to replace this??? My 03 Yukon SLT wanders all over the road even though I have replaced (tie rods, pitman/idler, upper/lower control arms, steering gear, intermediate shaft, shocks, swaybar bushings&links). P/N to the delete kit? Thanks for another great video!!!!

I've been working on these systems since they where new and recently added to an older GMC truck, I don't understand why any one would want to bypass it. When it works correctly it's wonderful! If it was such a bad idea than why are manufacturers still using the concept just different hardware?

I just installed the bypass kit on my 2000 CCSB C2500 454/7.4L this morning. I like the steering wheel feedback better than I ever did before. It's personal preference I suppose.
@johnny0454
@johnny0454 Жыл бұрын
@@meanmax9663 That's probably because it wasn't working correctly before you deleted it. The most common problem in these systems (other than a leak) is the steering wheel sensor under the dash. I'd bet that was probably this guy's issue in the video and would have been a way easier repair than installing the delete kit the second time and the pump for no reason the first time. Those sensors only last 40-50 thousand miles, but are relatively easy to replace - only about 20 minutes. If you drove one which was working correctly you might prefer it.

AWESOME THANKS 👍 FOR THE VIDEO . I just changed the line in my 2000 Tahoe outside it was about 13° I live in Grantsburg in Northwestern Wisconsin it was kind of chilly . It started out a week ago with a bad water pump and it just kept going from there A C belt and tightener and the power steering line has been leaking for a while it's a Frick n pain to change outside in the cold . I watched a nother video about the EVO sensor and read a few posts on Google about there rigs wondering and sloppy steering and is like herding a Goat with a Stick Bad Lol . If the wind hits you your all over the place . I was wondering if this up grade gets rid of that sensor and stops the loose steering . I really don't want to go through the process of pulling the steering column apart and changing all that . Let me know. Love your videos thanks again Roger the Farmer from Grantsburg Wisconsin

The EVO valve has zero correlation with play in the steering components. It only relates to the amount of power assist you receive and at which speed. I'd recommend checking your rag joint, it's in the steering column where it meets the steering box under the hood, hidden by a plastic cover.
@rogerw2101

@@johnny0454 I will do that I'll check that cuz the steering is oh sloppier then heck man like I said it's like herding a goat with a stick just tapping from side to side and keep trying to keep it in the middle it's it just feels like there's nothing there when you're going around a corner or something that feels like you're just going to I don't know drift right off I ain't going that fast I'd be drifting I don't think the Tahoe's got all the spine twisting gut wrenching neck snapping torque of a NASCAR now that's funny right there . I guess one of the questions was if I change that eliminate the that evil valve in the pump Evo sensor and put in that other piece of pipe and the valve in the pump do I unplug the sensor on the steering column or is that Linked with everything else on the car or with the rest of the system. I looked online and I checked the steering sensor on the column they have two different ones of course I've got the expensive one and it's like 100 something bucks for it , I really like to know if that's bad or not or how you test it or is that stupid valve in the pump It Just sloppy steering is terrible. the steering feels like if you put a floor jack under the middle of your cross member and Jack the truck up so the tires are just barely on the ground that's how it feels when it steers just like there's just nothing there and I've noticed it's got I was in an accident on last Saturday we live in a small town they had some kind of fall festival thing for kids and I wanted to go to the bank and they had the streets blocked off and I was going to try to go around the back street to pull up by the bank and that was blocked off and I ended up going down this other little side street that was double parked on both sides narrowed and crap and I'm going to going down there mind my own business and all of a sudden this goofy broad pulls out right in front of me bam I nailed her right in the freaking driver's side fender . Of course she's driving a 2015 GMC Acadia or whatever the hell you call it I got a 2000 that's 22 years old and she's got a 2015 while that's still up there she didn't look where she's going I'm like I back up get out of the vehicle and I want to just like go nuclear on her but I didn't cuz it was in public and I didn't want to get hualed away in chains like before laugh out loud but I get out and I said why didn't you look where you're going she didn't look she just pulled right out I'm like why didn't you look the driver's handbook Says look both ways make sure it's clear!. She says why glance back and then I looked ahead so I didn't hit the car in front of me that I parked real close ? So you pull out and hit me oh my God so I took it in for an estimate the estimate on it for the damage to the front passenger fender bumper lights blinker the whole thing . Clyde looked pretty good you know for a 22-year-old Tahoe I called it Clyde because it's the Camel TanTaHoe Lol But the estimate was $2,753 worth of damage I hit her with my wheel so now it pulls to the right pretty hard and I've noticed there's a coolant leak some place that I can't find underneath I don't know where it's leaking if it cracked part of the radiator or what I don't know but it started taking coolant the light came on and I dumped a gallon inm unless it's going out because I have a crackhead issue I thought and I put some that $70 quart head sealer blue devil I poured that in there and it did kind of stop and it's gotten better well then then it started in again now after hitting , anyway about steering I'm going to have to wait I got too many other irons in the fire right now I found a 99 pickup that's got the same dash and everything everything as far as heater wise that I need and it's four wheel drive 5.3 and I'm going to probably pick it up cheap I don't know what's wrong with it the guy that had it had a heart attack and die he was actually a cousin of mine but it's been sitting beside his shed I know I open it up open the hood up and the bumpersos pulled off in front but the grill is good lights are good and I don't know I don't know about the dash I need the heater controls I need to heater actuator my my dash blinks on and off all the time so I don't know maybe that one's good I don't know if it is or not there's no way of finding out he's dead and nobody knows but anyway thanks for replying to me I'm sorry this is so long that's all I do is talk I guess when I talk to anybody I'm out here in Hayfield by myself all the time on the farm the dog don't talk back and it's kind of boring if he did I'd probably have a heart attack . But thanks Man 👍

Good video was wondering if you had an idea on an issue i have. When pressing on brakes with hydro boost system i can see all the pressure go straight into power steering pump. When this happens steering becomes extremely hard and i have no brake pressure. I had changed the pump flow valve with an oem gmc one after that everything happened.it actually shredded the seals inside hydro boost and i have replaced them. Puzzled if you get a chance maybe any thoughts. 2005 gmc yukon denali xl 6.0
