Just got a used Davy crocket. Love how quick it heats up and low pellet usage. Replaced my treager with a Daniel Boone and was rebuilding a Louisiana when I came across this lil grill. Perfect size for the three still at home. Now to update to wifi controls and new pans.

Great video. I got one 2 years ago and love it.I just purchased another one as a gift. However.. The grill's internal temperature in the cold weather (20-40F) is NEVER stable nor accurate. The blanket is a must. Also, the temp on a windy day can be off 15-25 degrees. Other than that it's a great little smoker and GMG has a fantastic customer service!
@EarthSense

Thanks so much for the message and feedback Vladlmir! Yes, people really do like the thermal blanket - warm or cold weather it definitely cuts down fuel usage and and helps hold temp. I have not heard of these inaccurate temps when it's cold out. I'll check with our tech team - It should be holding at proper temp when the thermal sensor is providing accurate output. Again, I'll check with our tech team on that and circle back around. Thanks again!
@EarthSense
@EarthSense 4 жыл бұрын
Vladlmir, We should take a closer look at some areas. This is the message from our lead grill tech - A couple degree fluctuation is acceptable but 5-7 degrees or greater could be an issue. Potential issues could be grill is not level, inner shields and trays not proper, feed obstruction, long pellets, or actual component issues such as the thermal sensor. Let's start with the basics Vladlmir - Check to make sure the unit is level. Double check your inner baffles. Run the hopper empty and clean out any accumulated sawdust with a vac. Check your pellet length - ideally they should be around 3/8" to 1/2" length. Let us know what you find. Thanks.

I just ordered one from you about an hour ago...I keep looking in the driveway looking forward to the delivery LOL :-) Looking forward to smoking in the backyard and taking it camping as well. Besides the legs, I see the it has small feet. Could you use this on a "plastic" folding table or would it get too hot? I'll keep looking, but do you have a video on how the app works? My friend just bought and he said the programming through the app (w/wifi) is a COMPLETE game changer!!

Thanks for the message and your business! You'll love the grill - if you get any questions as you go along just let us know - always here to help. The grill should be on a non-combustible surface while grilling/smoking. If you put a metal plate over the plastic table that would suffice. That's a great idea - we'll definitely plan to do a WiFi operation video with the GMG app. For now you can check the GMG website or other videos on YT. Any other questions please let us know. @@EarthSense I have used this thing like crazy and it’s absolutely a great product. My wife and I love it for of course brisket, pork shoulders and what not. But it’s use with making vegetables and fish freakin awesome is really helping my dieting! One question is their any way to just run the fan? I would love to attempt some cold smoking for stuff like cheese or salt by running my smoke tube and just having the fan run on the grill to keep the tube going. Also absolutely critical to get the rack accessory for more grilling area and for cooking thin cuts of meat or fish. Smoke tube also a must have accessory for that extra punch when you need it. Thanks for everything!

@@buffalomowing1188 Awesome to hear! Yeah, the only limits are the imagination. I find myself doing a lot of veggies and fish as well. Thanks so much for sharing! I'm not aware of a program in the control board to just allow the fan to run other than on the cool down cycle. One could certainly disconnect the combustion fan wires and run a cord with the proper connectors to run it to direct power. I've never personally tried that but cold smoking cheeses and salts sounds amazing! Keep us posted on your grilling adventures!! Thanks!

@@buffalomowing1188 That sounds so amazing! I think you just inspired me with that :) Yeah, I would think one could also put in a basic in-line rheostat to ramp up or slow down voltage of the blower to get varying effects. IMPORTANT NOTE: All motors in the Davy are 12V DC. Important you run the direct wire to a 12V DC source. I've seen folks test DC motors with the battery for their drill/sawsall, car cigarette outload cord modified, etc.. Just make sure it's 12 volt DC Power. Golf cart battery would probably give you the longest draw time. Keep me posted!!

So if you cook a pizza, cookies, or a cake, what kind of pellets would you use?
@EarthSense
@EarthSense 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the message Colin! Everyone has there own preference when it comes to this. For myself personally, If I am doing bread, cookies, cakes, deserts or fruits I like a very mild fruit wood pellet. GMG's Fruitwood is great, Apple is a great choice, and I like pecan as well. For Pizza I've played around with several different types of woods, Personally the GMG Texas blend is my favorite, but I also really like Oak, Alder and Hickory if I want a bit more robust smokiness. Hope that helps, any other questions be sure to let us know. Appreciated!

Thanks for the message, happy to help. Let's start with the basics. Unplug the unit, clean out any pellets in the burnpot, and let's go through another start-up cycle. Sometimes the auger is not 'primed' with pellets and not enough fuel reaches the burnpot during the ignition sequence. This can happen on new grills or when the hopper runs completely empty. How do you compare the Davy Crockett to the Trek?
@EarthSense
@EarthSense 3 жыл бұрын
Personally I have not tried the Trek as of yet. From my understanding all components are the same from the Davy to the Trek. I know the Trek does not have the folding legs that double as a carrying handle. I know the Trek has an optional stand to place the unit in so it's up higher when backyard grilling. Performance wise given the same components and technology is used both, the Davy & Trek should be right in line with each other. Hopefully we'll be able to do a test & overview video on the Trek very soon. Any other questions please let us know. Thanks!

Hey Paul! Thanks for the message. Yes, I have used the grill in Wisconsin winter climates which can get very cold. It does a really nice job holding temp regardless. GMG just recently introduced the Thermal Blanket for the Davy Crockett which basically insulates the grill. Makes a huge difference in summer and winter grilling with overall fuel consumption. Any other questions please let us know, happy to assist.
@gordonkilner8611
@gordonkilner8611 5 жыл бұрын
I've used mine in a cold Canadian winter. It holds it temperature very well but does go through pellets a little quicker when its cold out. The auger that pushes the pellets into the firebox can also jam up in the winter with frozen pellets. It's quite easy to unjam by tapping on the bottom of the firebox with a small hammer as you restart the ignition process. Overall its a fantastic little smoker.
@EarthSense
@EarthSense 5 жыл бұрын
@@gordonkilner8611 Thanks for the helpful insight Gordon. The new Thermal Blanket GMG has come out with for the Davy is awesome. Summer or winter grilling it saves about 10-15% on pellet usage. When opening and closing the hood the thermal quickly allows the temperature to ramp back up and hold at the selected degree. Check out the thermal here if you haven't seen it before - pellethead.com/product/green-mountain-grills-gmg-davy-crockett-thermal-blanket-oem/

Thanks for the through review 🙌🏼. What do you think about Davy vs Daniel? I have the money to buy either but not sure which one I want. I like the portable aspect of a Davy but mainly will be using at home. I live in Orlando FL which can be quite humid. I’ve heard some complaints about paint chipping and rusting. Any issues you’ve seen?
@EarthSense
@EarthSense 4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! I've had both the Daniel and Davy, Now I just have two Davy's myself. The main question I would ask myself is how many people am I going to be cooking for. For me, I'm usually just cooking for myself or 1 or 2 others. I'm also in the city and love to take my grill wherever I go. If I had a family to feed and found myself primarily cooking in the backyard, then I would probably go to the Daniel Boone. As for the finish, it's a pretty nice powdercoat that is put on them now. My one Davy that is 7 years old I'm about to give a touch up paint job on. Just some High Temp Flat Black Paint - Small little areas where I have nicked it, banged it, let food grease soak in, etc.. Any other questions let us know, happy to help Sherlock!

Earth Sense awesome! Thanks for the reply. I was wondering a couple other things comparing Davy and Daniel. Does the Davy have a slot on the side of the hopper to empty pellets to add a different flavor pellet during cooking? Does the Davy hopper have a refill alarms? Does it have the same WiFi functionality? Can the Davy heat up to 500 degree for searing capabilities? Is the metal body have the same thickness? Are the internal temp monitors (not the probe) the same? Thanks again!
@EarthSense
@EarthSense 4 жыл бұрын
@@SherlockChromesSFY Absolutely! Happy to help. 1. No the Davy does not have a slot to empty out the pellets. It's a 9 lb hopper on there. 2. The Davy does not have a fuel alarm on the unit. 3. WiFi functionality is the same 4. Davy goes up to 550 degrees. 150-550 Fahrenheit. 5. You will find a higher gauge metal with the Daniel Boone and Jim Bowie for the body. 6. I'm looking to purchase my first smoker and very interested in the Davy Crockett. I've noticed that one of the issues that people experienced is loss of smoke through the lid. Would you recommend using high temp gasket to seal it?
@EarthSense
@EarthSense 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the message. When the Davy is smoking, it's normal that smoke will come out around the lid, smoke stack and even the fuel hopper. The GMG Daniel Boone and Jim Bowie would be the same. We've noticed the same with Traeger grills, Rec Tec, and other pellet grills. I have heard of some folks putting a flat tape gasket around that lid which can certainly be done. I would say that even though we see smoke escaping from the grill, 90-95% is concentrated inside the cooking area. We do offer many sizes of the flat fire rated tape gasket should one want to try/play with that. Any other questions please let us know. Thanks!

Earth Sense well seems like the word “grill” and “smoker” are used in a somewhat convoluted way based on my research . Like I said previously I’m only concerned with brisket specifically and need something portable and small suitable for one brisket at a time . I do like the power flexibility of this also. Is there any other unit on market that would be a close rival or does this unit possess exclusive features ?
@EarthSense
@EarthSense 3 жыл бұрын
@@tobaccofarmer4life Thanks for the message back. Yeah, smoker and grill can certainly get convoluted a bit. With pellet grills most either have a range of settings or temperature adjustment. Around the 150-180F Degree mark is generally the 'smoke zone'. The Davy here cooking surface grate measures approx. 12" deep & 15" wide - for a portable unit still fits a nice size brisket. Personally I'm a big fan of doing extended smoke periods where I'll run the Davy at 150 for anywhere between 2-20 hours before I crank it up and finish off whatever I have on there. There's definitely some Manufacturers out there other than GMG in the portable pellet grill game. I always like to compare features, price points, and look over many reviews. To my knowledge the Davy Crockett does have some unique features from the others. It's WiFi - App through your phone to monitor food temps and adjust unit temps, The folding legs are nice - good chunk of the time mine is in the backyard and it's nice to have a portable grill higher off the ground when there's not a tailgate. I like the hopper size being 9lbs - again I like long smoke periods. 150-550 Temp range, many others out there I have found struggle to hit 500. Cool accessories for the Davy like the Thermal blanket which holds the heat in and personally I really like the pizza oven attachment. I think it's great option and choice based on what you are looking at doing. I'm always a proponent of full circle research and if you want any more info or personal suggestions just give a shout. Thanks!

What cart is that?
@EarthSense
@EarthSense 3 жыл бұрын
That's just a small metal cart I purchased at an office store. We do however have a Davy Crockett Cart/Stand that is in the final prototype stages and we'll be doing a video on that new accessory very soon!

My Review is honest. I don't work for GMG. I do freelance work for Earth Sense. My reviews on this are 100% genuine from my personal experience with this grill and grills I have used in the past. Thanks.

When he says "we" he is talking about Earth Sense, not Green Mountain Grills. You should get your facts straight before making snide remarks.

@@sfunk3 yeah agree. Learned more from this vid and the comment replies that this is likely the grill that I'm after and I live in Australia so this guy can't even sell me a grill! Thanks for the review!

Hey Bobby! Overall it's a pretty darn even cook all the way around. I do notice with my temp gun that when I am running it on temps of 400 + that the far corners are generally about 20-30 degrees less than the center. Overall very even heating surface but on high temps I will flip, rotate, and move my food as needed to ensure everything is done at about the same time. Any other questions please let us know. Thanks!

@@EarthSense Thanks, bro, I appreciate it. I think they may drop the hammer on one. Is 329 a good price? I found that at Sportsman's Warehouse in Denver, Colorado, And are they a good reliable authorised dealer?
@EarthSense
@EarthSense 4 жыл бұрын
@@bobbyarmijo3307 Absolutely bro! I have two and love'em. $329 is a pretty good price. I think you can go right to GMG's site and see a list of authorized dealers; I'm sure a sportsman's warehouse would be. I would ask them what their service policy is if you need help, have questions or there is an issue. I also like to check reviews when I buy - Yelp, Google, FB, etc.. Here is some of our Davy Listings - We have a few different packages for these badboys. Any other questions let me know - here to help my man! Cheers! pellethead.com/?s=davy

I bought the Davy Crockett Grill was 258 shipped to my house there's nothing special about it but I will confirm if you lose power and sometimes it is clunky the digital readout temperature well go really crazy you have to leave it unplugged for a while my power cord went bad they sent me a new one no problem no issue what do not do not do not throw away your grill there's things that the Davy Crockett just is not good for and beer can chicken is a waste it is stupid a beer can does not allow the smoke to go up into the chicken and the skin does not allow the smoke to go into the chicken so why do we do this what a waste of time somebody had an idea and it went viral but it is stupid don't do it you have to have some kind of a cage to set the chicken on with holes in it so the smoke goes in and the skin I don't know what you can do about the skin the skin will be brown and crisp but they'll be no smoking the chicken

Grill is a piece of crap after a year. 550 deg will peal the paint then the rust will start. The meat sensor went bad, the wifi quit, and the box temp quit so it heats to high and won't shut down. The 12v plug on the back quit working when we were camping near the gulf. The chrome rusted. They send me emails to jump through hoops and send pictures of parts that don't pertain. Think another brand would be a better investment.
