I'm currently hoarding miniatures from Perry (Agincourt and Rose wars), Wargames Atlantic (Afghans and WW1 germans) and Victrix (British napoleonics). Sludge has hit all the sweet spots in my alternative fantasy cravings. Hope to see expansions for more troop types, battlefields, missions, and narrative campaigns.

I find it amazing how far small-press games have come on since my youth. Back then, this would have been a photocopied booklet with a coloured paper cover. Now, we get full-colour, perfect bound, large format books. Sludge looks like a lot of fun.

This morning, I got hit with the inspiration to create a version for D&D that would sit in the same space as Sludge and Turnip28. Adventures in a grimdark age of black powder and battlefield muck. Something that would provide more opportunities to use the types of model conversions those games would facilitate. Including rules for running multiple models on one base as a single "monster" (mimicking DnD 5e's "swarm" type creatures, where a single monster represents many creatures working in tandem). I'm not even close to finished, but I've got the outlines in my notes. I'll need to get back to it at some point.

Also - gotta give some probs to Sean for taking the idea of blast markers from BFG and transplant it into a land warfare game! What a great idea to really show the chaos, confusion and overall nightmare fuel of a battlefield!
@richmcgee434
@richmcgee434 3 жыл бұрын
Give credit where credit is due. Blast markers as "battlefield friction" indicators were in Epic 40,000 back in 1997, years before BFG even came out, and carried on into the Epic Armageddon rules later. Other historical games have had similar mechanics and markers (often calling them "pin" or "under fire" or "stress") since the 70s.
@Phoenikuz
@Phoenikuz 3 жыл бұрын
@@richmcgee434 Well, yes - but BFG was the first instance where the "friction" markers where actually a physical entity on the battlefield, that stayed on the playing field even after units had moved away - hence why I made the comparison :)
@SPACENOMADMALEV
@SPACENOMADMALEV 3 жыл бұрын
What's an even fun noodle baker is I don't even know if Sean played BFG! And during playtesting, the gore stacked and followed the unit around. But when I was playing against him I thought since he made those cool gore tokens that it should actually "Bloom" out from the action on the board, and stay where it happened. Leaving behind this vibe of the aftermaths of fights. It was awesome. But Sean killed all my guys.
@richmcgee434

@@Phoenikuz I played several historical and scifi minis rules in the 80s that had things like artillery barrage and airstrike markers that affected the area around them and lingered on the table as a threat. At least one game (which I think was a homebrew) had double-sided barrage markers that initially damaged and demoralized units near them (as the shells fell) and then flipped over to indicate permanent areas of "cratered terrain" that slowed movement but offered cover to infantry inside it. I like BFG's mechanics, but the blast markers aren't really all that original to me. Their only standout feature is the way they let you track shield status at a glance, which had some strange side effects with units that didn't have conventional shields.

Flintloque and all its spinoffs and variants have been around for about 30 years now. Alternative Armies is still putting out new material for the line regularly - think the most recent thing was more of their "Wylde West" figs for skirmishes in their fantasy-America setting.

I think a lot of inspiration comes from Turnip 28, which deserves a bit of a shout out too.
@MetalKingStudio
@MetalKingStudio 3 жыл бұрын
I can assure you that I took zero inspiration from turnip28 or Max Fitzgerald. I thought gardens of Hecate did some cool conversions. But Max is on his own thing. It’s a shame that there is so much confusion. Blackpowder and fantasy Wargaming isn’t a new idea. Osprey is publishing a fantasy blackpowder game that was written before either of these. I took a lot of inspiration from Alan and Michael Perry who have created an amazing range of minis. I took a lot of inspiration from Saga. A miniature agnostic historical fantasy game. I took a lot of inspiration from global warming and the dark days of COVID-19. I think max is doing cool work. And turnips should be enjoyed to their fullest. But I feel like it’s worth mentioning that Sludge and Turnip28 are not related. Lots of love.
@TimothyEdwards
@TimothyEdwards 3 жыл бұрын
@@MetalKingStudio Ah, cool. They're very similar aesthetically and came up around the same time, so you can understand how it's easy to make a mistake with that!
@MetalKingStudio
@MetalKingStudio 3 жыл бұрын
@@TimothyEdwards For sure. It's unfortunate and can be confusing. Which is why I said something. I started doing drawings and writing notes for Sludge in 2016. So it is a bummer that the two get mixed up. But also. A miniature agnostic game should welcome people to use figures they made for other games. So plenty of sludge armies will look like turnip armies. Its just the nature of the beast. :)

@@MetalKingStudio "Blackpowder and fantasy Wargaming isn’t a new idea." Too right. Alternative Armies has been publishing Flintloque and its spinoffs for ~30 years now. Not really my thing but there's a seriously committed fan base out there. Hell, Slaughterloo's even a decent set of straight historical Nappy rules if you want to use it that way.

Do you think basing Line Infantry on 60mm would detract from the game? I’ve built a bunch of minis that fit this theme but they are all individually based. I know I could easily make 60mm round movement trays for them, but I’m not sure if that would tray off the efficacy of field guns or the board size too much. What do you think?
