Plus in most JRPG/RPGs 999 is the max level a character can go (depending on the game ) and sometimes 9999 is the max gold/money you can have so just minus 9999 by 1000 and you end up with 999

The design also seems inspired by the Gingerbread Man. Just look at its shape. It very much looks like a grey gingerbread man cookie. But more than that, it also plays into the lore provided by the reveal video. In Paldea, trainers have only ever caught Gimmighoul in its Chest form. That's because in its Roaming form, Gimmighoul runs away when approached. Trainers in Paldea very literally cannot catch them. So... "You can't catch me-I'm the Gingerbread Man".

I'm surprised it took 9 generations for us to finally get a proper Mimic Mon. Voltorb and Foongus filled a similar niche, but this is the first time we've seen something mimicking a treasure chest instead of a Pokeball. Plus the 999 thing could be a neat reference to how so many old school RPG's would cap money and other things at 999 due to quirks in how programming worked back then.

I think there's a Spanish Ghost story called "Gold Coins" where a little girls and her maid see a ghost storing gold coins in the floor every night. So obviously they start to take the coins. One night the little girl gets trapped in the floor trying to get one of the coins she dropped. The maid wasn't able to get her out. So to this day you can still hear the haunting screams of the little girl trapped in the floor.

I actually did a sort of "explain the name" thing on its reveal trailer. Obviously there's the fact that its name sounds like "gimme gold" and "ghoul", but the "Gimmigh" part sounds like "Mimic", which are classic RPG enemies that pretend to be treasure chests before clamping their jaws onto you, and the Chest Form just straight up being a Mimic.

I think Gimmighoul is also inspired by mimics and Spanish Dubloons as well. The coins might be modeled on Spanish Dubloons, which were made of gold and often depicted as part of a pirate's treasure. Dubloons, Pieces of 8, Pieces of 9, and pieces of 12 are all gold coins, and their production was all done in the area the region takes place in; pieces of nine and pieces of eight were commonly made all over Europe, look up how they got their names, and you'll be pleasantly surprised. But Dubloons are special; they are a type of gold coin tied explicitly to Spain, which is why they are often referred to as Spanish Dubloons, along with the monikers of Gold Dubloons and just Dubloons. And on the subject of Eldarado, it is believed the myth actually spun out from a practice the Spanish explorers observed; they watched the act of Eldaraho, the "man of gold," which was actually just a holy man getting naked and covering his entire body in gold powder and dust then diving into a sacred lake to wash it all off and have the gold settle at the bottom of the lake. The Spanish were perplexed, and what they thought was justifiably angry, at the practice because they saw a whole mess of gold that was confirmed to be at the bottom of a lake but couldn't get to it because of how deep the water was. So eventually, the Spanish reasoned if there was a "Man of Gold," they must have gotten the idea from a city of Gold, which is where Eldarado comes in; eventually, it was said to be part of a set of 7 cities of gold; there's actually an old animated series called the Cities of Gold, I've only ever seen it's op, but it seems to have been made back in the 1970s or 1980s, but I don't have any idea where the animation studio that produced is/was situated, but I think it would be funny if a Spanish animation house made a cartoon on the concept of the Cities of Gold.

If we consider that "Alien" could be understood as "foreigner" its makes even more sense to the "conquistadores" part. And it's a meme here in Brazil to ask Portugal to give our gold back. Something I thought when seeing the trailer, in its roaming form it looks to be in the shape of the gingerbread man. And seeing as how no one in Paldea has caught one in its roaming form.... you can run as fast as you can, but you can't catch it... it's a gingerbread man. Also the idea of it being a D&D style mimic chest, and finally this one may just be coincidence, but it being a ghost type and having 999 coins could also be a tongue in cheek reference to the Haunted mansion. I remember that one episode from Sun & Moon where kiawe touched the shovel of a sandyghast, and he began to dig up sand around the Pokémon. So, I'm thinking it's the same thing with Gimmighoul, where when you find a special coin that the Pokémon loves, you're compelled to find more. It's odd they specifically mentioned 999 in the reveal. I wonder if they need 999 coins to evolve. Or maybe, Gimmighoul is #999 in Nat dex? Since we are likely hitting 1000 Pokemon up to this point, I won't be surprised if the purposely made a Pokemon related to that number.

@@hhjan594 oh I know its number is not actually 1080 However Enamorus in go is 1007, i just think Gimmighoul will be 73 numbers after Enamorus. Basicaally pkmn number 978

@@HeyHeyChey And I just said, the order of the internal numbers do not follow the nat dex. It doesn't matter how many numbers it is after Enamorus in the internal data, sonce the order isn't the same whatsoever. If you still insist they have something to do, then I have no interest of discussing this anymore, since you cannot understand my point whatsoever. We will see next week if Gimmighoul is #999 or not.

Is it possible that roaming form gimmighoul is partially inspired by the gingerbread man nursery rhyme? since it runs away and no one has ever caught it, and its body also vaguely resembles a gingerbread man shape

surprised you didn't bring up Mimics from classic RPG video games that usually take the form of chests and spring out to attack. maybe Gimmighoul attacks those to protect it's treasure since it can't run away in the Chest Form.

I don't know if it has any influence in but there is a famous (at list in eu ) play by Molière called L'Avare in french and is about a very greedy Man (avare means greedy ) plus there is an other play by Victor Hugo called Ruy Blas, it takes places in spain and one of the most famous adaption is a European co-production (involving spain) called " la folie des grandeurs" where the character of don sallute is played by Louis de Funès and has that greedy personna

Fun fact: El Dorado never actually existed. The Conquistadors just assumed that the people of South America were filthy rich because they used gold in sacrifices, decorations, and jewelry(they had a barter system, so gold was worthless to them). Spain tried for years to find it, but obviously never did. Also, Spain was so focused on gold that they thought Platinam, which we know is actually worth way more than gold, was worthless. They actually dumped all their platinum unto the sea because if this

To add to the dowsing idea, one of the "gimmicks" as far as using/finding items was the Dowsing Machine in the Pokétch (4th Generation and HGSS). It didn't use the dowsing rods, obviously, but the idea was exactly the same, really. Just wanted to remind people of that fun little mini game. Edit: I initially forgot about Black and White with their dowsing rods on the bottom screen: the closest representation, physically, of dowsing rods in Pokemon games.

"999" is also a common trope about salesmen and infomercials since so many products have a price tag with a lot of 9s in it. It's a simple psychological trick to make the buyer think the price is a lot lower than it actually is by taking advantage of the roll-over effect of our decimal system. 999 + 1 is 1000; an extra digit slot is added, making the number LOOK bigger in our minds because it takes more space to write down, but numerically it's no different than adding 1 to 998 to getting 999. Mathematically the increase is the same but because the pattern and spacial-mapping part of our brain tends to focus more on the number of digits than what those digits actually represent, we can be subconsciously fooled into thinking we're getting a great deal when we're not.
