This video shows how to add jointed arms to your gnomes. This is an idea to give more motion to your gnomes.

Hi Duane what a great idea for the gnomes . This is just a thought for the top of the arms . If you cut the tops around instead of straight across then it would look more like a shoulder and won't hurt if it showed . Like I said just a thought from how I use to do cloth dolls .Never thought of it for the gnomes . Thank you so much for the idea ..... Diane

Yes Diane I actually was thinking that too. It would be possible to do it with the curlers. I did not show it that way because most gnome makers hide the top of the arm under the hat. I do think that it would work. Thank you for sharing.

Duane, great minds run in same lines….I have been working on arms also. I have been sewing them on. I have made changes in the pattern to sew the arms on before I stitch up the body. Then I sew arms into their coats so I can slip the coat on their arms like we all do. I am also switching from the ball hand to a sewn hand. The hand is like a mitten…has a thumb and a mitten shape. I have made Angel dolls in the past and made defined hands for them, so I may experiment with that for the future. The next thing I want to tackle is a leg. Something that I can put pants on ( for the boys). For the females, I put them in dresses, so legs are not so much of an issue. I’m watching with interest.

Thank you for sharing. I still only hand sew, so I try to keep to just a little sewing and more hot glue. I do like the idea of the mitten for the hand.

THANK YOU for sharing your IDEA!! When you showed your mobile arm my FIRST THOUGHT was using “BRADS”!! You know, those gold colored metal things that have a “button-like” top and two flat pointed parts that bend apart to secure papers!! I might give it a try!! What do you think of it? 🥰🎉

I am not sure if hey would allow full mobility or be strong enough to hold together over time. Could be worth trying though to see how they work.

Genius! Love that something so simple creates something fun! One thing, you didn't put the Wire back in the foam arm. Would you do that before or after putting in the "eye"?
@duanedking8498
@duanedking8498 3 жыл бұрын
I realized after I did the video that I did not put the wire back in. I put the wire back in before I glue the wood ball on as the hand. The wire can be inserted before or after putting in the joint. I was wondering if anyone was going to catch that. Thank you.

With this type of gnome I stick with the felt or as you can see on the gnome with the coat, I am using a heavy fabric. On my gnomes made out of cones, I make the arms and legs out of all different kinds of materials.

I was very excited to try the movable arms. I made my gnome and arms out of felt I was very happy with the end product. However I have been making football gnomes. The gnomes are made out of a sock, but I made the arms and jersey out of spandex. I attached the arm with the animal eyes and snugged it down until I heard the click. The arms were movable but it did not take much wear and tear with the spandex. The ball of the eye which is secured by that notch and then closing it off with hot glue is slick and the arm came off with very little effort. Do you have any suggestions on how I can keep the arm secured with the spandex?
@duanedking8498

I have never worked with spandex, so unfortunately I do not have an answer.

@@duanedking8498 think of the figure 8 and a small button. Need two buttons and I used kite string for strength. You go through the body placing a button on outside of arm on other side. Go through the opposite arm and button. Come back through button then arm then body to do the same on original starting side. Go through arm, button, arm, meeting string from starting point. Tie knot with both string ends, knot will be under starting side. Hope this makes sense. 🤔😊

@@harveypeggygoltz7956 I hope I'm not too late to respond. If I'm understanding this correctly, I'll end up with a button on the outside of each arm?
