Political parties are now racing against time to constitute government. Last week the ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa announced that the party was seeking to form a government of national unity with a broad group of opposition parties.
The party has laid down stringent conditions under which parties would be included in the pact.
This after the ANC failed to achieve majority votes in the recent elections. What can South African political parties learn from 1994 Government of National Unity in order to work together in the best interest of the country.
Former Finance Minister and Old Mutual Chairperson Trevor Manuel was a cabinet minister in 1994, during the last government of national unity.
He joins us virtually to share his experience.

I agree what TM says about 'the quality of the maturity' ... it will take extremely mature Parliamentarians and robust engagements. This could shift the debates in Parliament and see it fulfil its mandate in a very responsible way.

Whatever agreement is hammered out by the politicians, it MUST be reduced to writing and published in full. Thereafter there MUST be a referendum where the people have a final say on it.

He also appointed his close associate, Edward Kieswetter, as the Commissioner of SARS, who is arguably compromising the institution's integrity from within. Additionally, his wife's manipulation of the Rand has had lasting detrimental effects on the South African economy, for which she was subsequently rewarded with a position at the reserve bank. Therefore, giving credence to his rhetoric is unproductive. They present themselves as innocent, yet they are the true culprits, their misdeeds shielded by the establishment and a compromised judiciary.

The IFP and the DA forming a coalition with the ANC just shows who the parties who actually fight for all South Africans are. MK and EFF rejecting the coalitian doesnt stand for South Africa as a whole but instead just for themselves. South Africans before African charity starts at home once South Africans are cared for then we can open arms to the rest of the worldd needing Charity. Foreigners who boost the economy should be the ones welcome not those taking basic employment from South Africans.

This is not GNU but coeletion. Without MK and EFF it remain coeletion. It's either they add MK and EFF or remove IFP to qualify as GNU. As it stands it is a coeletion. Another thing to note: ANC failed to with the majority, so they had no choice but to seek for coeletion, so this is not a heroic moment of sharing power!

@ faizeladam1404 he was involved in arms deal . Trevor was the minister at the time and he did not oppose or report it or resign. He even went to the extent of looking for the funds to fund a project that was costly and unnecessary. Trevor was advised not to embark on that journey to seek funds but he did the question should be who financed the project and for what reasons. Did Trevor benefit anything. Many expert think so. Go and look at atms deal report and you will see Thabo Mbeki, Moeletsi and Trevor are also part of the deal

@juniormolefe programmes like the NHI doesn't work in rich first world countries like USA and the UK so how can it work in SA? 🤷‍♂️ I won't argue that it's great as a policy but it can't even get off the ground without increasing taxes on the already struggling middleclass. The immediate solution is to rather have existing hospitals upgraded and get more doctors serving internships at public hospitals. If tax money for infrastructure was actually being used properly, we wouldn't need the NHI at all. With the NHI we'll have people say that it's great for the poor, but the cost of living will go up and we'll actually have more poor people then, it's always a balancing act

The biggest problem with programmes like the NHS is money. Out of an adult population of 40 million only 8 million pay income tax, and almost half the population receive a government grant of one sort or another. So where will the money to finance a program like that come from, when the current public health system is at breaking point due to lack of funding?

@@GerhardtRoos I understand your point but the picture is actually worse than that. SA population is 60m people and although we only have 7m registered taxpayers, only 5m South Africans actually pay tax. That's largely the middle class. The interesting thing though would be to see how many of those 5m taxpayers register for the elections, then actually cast a vote. The voting population vs the total population is embarrassing, especially given how the political landscape is shaping up
