Yes I want comics to be big, and get frustrated when it feels like the industry is happy being small. Perch correctly summarizes me. :) Also, I think comics are like Hydrox. I don't think they want to be Oreo because they feel it's out of reach.

Rob also has the 2nd highest selling comic (X-Force #1) under his name. That's what puts him in the discussion. Whereas Todd's contributions, while significant, didn't put it in the same place financially (though his Spiderman #1 is actually the 5th highest selling ever which is surprising).

Jim Lee should be ashamed of himself . He betrayed the fans and he flat out does not care about the state of comics now or he would do things at dc differently . The sad part is, both DC and Marvel supposedly have people who are specifically there to grow the business. What is it that they're actually doing these days. To be fair, both DC and Marvel have tried no ideas to grow their market. DC experimented with their Walmart deal. Marvel tried the Digest Format in 2014-2015. Both of them are currently experimenting with manga sized trades at lower prices than their standard trade format. It really may just be the case of an industry dying a slow death. General interest really could be waning. Especially since prices keep rising. Comics has only one way to grow. Just one: attract kids. Most adults aren't going to get into comics in their late 20s. It's a dead end approach. Comics have to aim at kids, and it has to be affordable to them. Right now, it's a boutique business that's slowly pricing itself out of existence.

The problem is even if she (and others like her) wanted to improve, they would still need senior/chief editors to mentor and guide them, and most of the editors at the big two, all the way to the top, just don't give a damn about the quality of the writing in their comics. Also, it's obvious the veteran editors at the big two don't give a G-Dam cent about their diverse writers having successful careers. They're just purse puppies for the vet editors to parade around.

When I worked for DirecTV and Papa John's they would talk about being number one all the time. But that was when GW and Obama were in office. In the years since most adults I work with don't care. Because according to them if we're number one or number 50 as long as they're getting a paycheck they don't care. For a number of people being a good cog in the wheel at walmart has zero bearing on their pay. You are a warm body to build that endcap. You are and will be replaced.

The boss can also be a factor. A lot of people don’t want to rise up in position if they’re going to be treated badly. So they stay as a mere cog in the wheel because rising up. Just means being treated badly.

Sorry, Perch, but this doesn't feel applicable to me. I'm not about to lie to myself or others over my skills and talents. Being Number 1 and being successful are not necessarily the same thing. I may be able to draw pretty well, but I am not "the best," not "Number 1." However, that does not mean I'm untalented or underserving of respect.

Singers have a number one song in their 20s then never rise again. Movie stars- especially women- have their biggest role when they are young, then never have that big a role for the rest of their careers. I think it’s kinda the same thing. People believe Avengers Endgame was the pinnacle of comic movie popularity. They don’t expect the genre will ever go back to number one. They also feel the comic book movie superseded the comic book.

It’s so frustrating. Business & The Arts are exact opposites of each other. Being number 1 is a business mentality. It’s not an Arts mentality and won’t work because as DC and Marvel has shown people for the last few decades. People will like what they like. This is why business people are needed to get certain stories out there because Artists don’t understand that stuff. Business is about Absolutes. Art is all about expression and creativity. We definitely need both but it’s a balancing act. The biggest compliment you can give to an Artist’s work is enjoying it and sharing that joy with others.

Manga exists Perch, so comics can’t ever be number 1, they’ll never create a story as good as Berserk, they’ll never create a world as interesting as Made in Abyss, or a villain as good as Bondrewd. And judging by the state they’re currently in I can’t see them ever being a challenge for manga.

You are wrong about being #1. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but being #1 has never been the goal in any literal sense anywhere I have been, nor should it be. It's a fool's errand and a source of failure. Being successful has no relation to being #1 I've been many places. I've worked at the biggest company in certain fields (and the biggest company in the world) on the biggest products in the world and on products that were not. The goal is not to be #1. The goals are almost always about your company, your product, your sales, not the other guys. If a goal is about the other guys, it is a side effect of another goal. Saying you ARE #1 whatever is for PR Jedis in press releases or for hype at a company meeting. It's in advertisements, but advertisers invent their own form of #1 so it means nothing. Why? Unless you are in sports, you do not get anything for beating the other company. You get something for being better yourself. You can be doing much worse and still become #1 if the other guy goes out of business. You may do wonderful and move out of #1 because somebody else invents something new and everyone is making more money. Companies that confuse being #1 with being successful create goals they cannot meet. So at the major, successful companies or the small companies I have worked for, the company will often announce when they are #1, but that is not the goal.
