Canadian with IRISH blood! I try not to pick sides between the brits and the irish, because I don't live there and I don't have to deal with the everyday struggles. But I will say ENGLAND is one of the most oppressive countries in history!!

I'm catalan and we don't have any state yet. We are a big nation with more than 1000 years of history, but now we live under the spanish occupation, like a colony, since 1714. We want a state based in equality, justice and freedom. And we say: Go on home Spanish soldiers, go on home! Visca Catalunya Lliure! Free Ireland!!

Ive found this song by chance, I think its brilliant /great tune and very well sung/. Im not referring to the content!! Im american but my roots are polish I used to live in Cork, Ireland and I found it extremely positive that irish people handle the past so well, There was no ager bout Brits at all, and when I asked about the history of bloody Friday they didnt want to tell me. I think its the best you can do and I can only hope that other nations will be able to give up the haters. All best

watt...Bobby Sands had such a huge support that he was voted in as an MP in the British Parliament. The fact that he was an MP on hunger strike means that the issues he raised should have been taken very seriously....because he was raising them on behalf of his constituents. The Prods have not had to contend with such issues, but if they had, then they might have been the IRA in reverse with UVF/UDA leaders going on hunger strike. The Ulster Gaels are home and the Ulster Scotts are home.

frenchpatriot...I totally agree with you..the phrase "so fuck your union jack we want our country back" sums up the feelings of many people under British rule in the world today. It's my Maori friend's favourite line too!

truebot...Afghanistan and Iraq are recent British military Campaigns. Both are so far away and the people so different. The Ireland invasion has been going for 840 years now and so many Irish have been negatively affected throguhout the world. The song is not only a really really catchy tune but it sums up the frustrated and angry feeling of a whole nation. The song rallies Irish Nationalists, Republicans, Fenians and their friends the world over. More Irish in UK and US and OZ than in Ireland

Jimbo...Every country believes their special forces are the best. But the SAS do have a tremendous reputation and history. Even the Yanks recently awarded them the highest commendation for their activities in the Middle East. The Rangers no doubt would train with the SAS and share knowledge and techniques. Remember, Ireland is so close to Britain, and its history so inter-twined that there is a strong love-hate relationship from the perspective of the Irish.

PART 2..de Valera also became leader of the Irish Volunteers and then you had a Republican Government with Armed Forces at their disposal. In January 1919 at the first parliamentary meeting the Republican Government announced that it was the Irish Republican Army that fought in the Easter uprising of 1916. In the 1922 elections the IRA and Sinn Fein and Ireland split between pro and anti-treaty factions. Anti-treaty support reduced to a mere 22%. de Valera and anti-treaty IRA fought on anyway.

Congratulations Caitlinnibhaoil, looks like you got the last word on 762SLR762. He was right about NI not being in Britain but in the UK. He probably is an ex-soldier pre late 80's coz the SLR was phased out around about then. Its good to share one's feelings, a kinda healing process, but best if done with mutual respect eh? Phil

marl...thanks for your input. Great to hear from an American that cares. Justice is still to be met. Republican/Nationalists are still underprivileged. Truth, Peace & Justice needs people like YOU to keep the flame shining brightly in America. Just because things have got much quieter it doesn't mean its all sorted. Britian always looks after its own interests and like Pharoah "will not let the Irish people go" until they receive help from Just people like YOU and Me (& Obama, Bill & Hilary etc

Part 2..UP..PIRA became the "people's army" with full support of the people they protected. Gran, Grandad, Mums, Dads, Aunts, Kids etc etc were all proud of their "Boys" and thought they did a good job. These whole communities were not all terrorists but ordinary people like you and me.

For the sake of the next generation its right to seek a higher level of peace now. Wasn't Bill Clinton's country but he met Gerry Adams in the Falls and shook hands and that helped move forward the peace process. The next stage must be an independent Ulster with strong ties with the UK for the peace of mind of the Unionists. After 40 years the next generation can then re-look at the next step.

The truth is that many in the world love the British and Americans. I think that inshegoes and dipso09 have been influenced by the loud voices that shout down and criticise the "tall poppies" on the world scene. There are millions of Iraqis who will gladly testify their appreciation of recent British and American involvement in their country's liberation. On the other hand there are many who hold resentful feelings about their/their countries poor treatment in the past...mainly by the British!

The Irish Gaels live throughout Ireland. In Ulster, one of the 4 Provinces of Ireland, they are called Ulster Gaels. In Leinster they are called Leinster Gaels. Sing instead "Give Northern Ireland back to the Ulster gaels and Scotts"...but it doesn't rhyme. Yes..keep protesting British Rule in Northern Ireland for it is wrong that they are there. But make it always a peaceful protest. You are Irish and the 842 year struggle is in your blood and part of your cultural identification

Must be one of the greatest hardcore Irish protest songs. I would love to sing it on St Pats day if I get a chance. Shared it with my Maori friend who used to be an activist. Her Grandad wasRepublican so there is the Rebel in her blood. She got really excited about the song but reflected sadly that the Maori have done nothing about the "occupation" whereas the IRA have achieved so much. Having said that we are both against IRA terrorists but are sympathetic with IRA freedom fighters. Phil
