So many folk delay their sailing adventure until they get their boat "just right." But we long-term liveaboards know that you can leave now and upgrade as you go.
Our friends Meredith and Conrad recently returned to Luperon after cruising back through the Bahamas and United States. Today, we sit down with Conrad to talk about what batteries and solar they had when they left, and how they've upgraded over the past 5 years.

Hey fella, love your attitude. Humble brave attitude of you and your lady. I hope you read this. Some people would maybe think it reckless but most people get caught in the perfection trap and never do what calls them. You did, you have my respect sir!

It was interesting to hear Conrad's journey. I'm pretty much at the start of the journey but in an RV and not a boat, but there's not a lot of difference except one floats and the other doesn't. Keep the good stuff coming guys.

That water maker is interesting. I have seen small hand pump water makers and wondered if anything like what is shown existed.

I have recently concluded that sailing single handed, without tiller pilot, chart plotter and house bank is not my idea of fun. To be rectified this winter.

Great video! Super interesting to see how other boats setup their electricity systems

I was wondering if Clark has watched the videos about using lithium batteries and "Super Capacitors" that people are doing to replace regular car batteries. I was wondering what he thought about adding them to your electrical system, to take care of surge currents. I believe it would help extend the life of your batteries, but it may not be worth the extra cost.

It would take care of the initial surge but caps also provide uncontrollable current in many cases that is its own "potentially dangerous" problem. I'd stick with lead. It solves the problems better in my opinion.

Cool video. I enjoyed that. I have a smaller yet more complicated boat. More solar and batteries but more pumps and fridge and... and.. and. Nevertheless its interesting to see how others are evolving their power systems.

Just curious - setting aside cost - what do you think about using a portable solar generator as an alternative upgrade step? Adds LFP capacity, some have 30 amp RV outlets, and having a separate AC inverter and solar panel(s) adds redundancy.

I don't care for the idea. When one part goes bad you have nothing usable. (They tend to use nonstandard battery voltages) If you build a system into your boat with discrete components and, for example, your inverter fails. You just replace the inverter.

I have a question about Conrad's discussion of "recharging" his batteries. Does he disconnect the solar panels for 4 days? Is he running the engine every 4th day? It sounded like he wants to go through a discharge cycle, so limits input? Any clarification?

It's all done automatically by setting the BankManager options. He only really uses solar for power.

Nice discussion. I too have been extremely wary about Lithium, and how to treat them to get a useful Service Life out of them, and tbh, they'll last longer than me, even with the brillant Bank Manager, if discharging them below 50% could soon result in a very Nasty Reduced Service Life surprise as according to a pretty good quality Chinese Lifepo4 batteries Manufacturer, discharging below 50% Capacity hits the available Recharge Cycles pretty hard ? I am liking the high spec internal Busbar an Cables that have shown up in some of the Recent Battery Tests done by Clark though, and things Lifepo4 related, are definitely starting to look up imho. Can they withstand discharging to 30% capacity though ? Shrugs, No idea. Time will tell I suppose. Best Wishes and Fair Winds. Bob in Wales still. 🤔👍⛵️✨️✨️✨️❤️

Approximately 95 percent of a lithium-ion battery can be recycled into new batteries. How many years of lithium are left? The scenario which assumes 73 Mt of lithium supply left, best policies (recycling, V2G, second-life) implemented and around 3 billion EVs on the road sees lithium fully depleted a few years beyond 2100. How bad is lithium mining? The process of extracting lithium consumes significant amounts of water and energy, and lithium mining can pollute the air and water with chemicals and heavy metals. In addition, mining lithium can disrupt wildlife habitats and cause soil erosion, leading to long-term ecological damage.
