It turned out that my deck switches were bad so the windows project wasn't really done yet.
This voice over type video was much easier to make so if I did them this way I might be able to do more repair videos. Please comment and tell me what you think about this style of video.

@@EmilyAndClark I think the problem is that a lot of people are planners and dreamers so reviews on the "best things to buy" do well. Projects are generally for people who already have a boat and then they are most likely sailing/working on it rather than watching KZfaq. I personally like both because a) I am still a planner and dreamer b) I have spent enough time on boats/the ocean to know that projects and maintenance are a constant thing with boat ownership (not to mention that learning from someone who has been doing it for a long time is invaluable)

See!! That edison connector idea is exactly why videos like this are useful! It's is a pretty good idea that you only arrived at from years of experience. Regarding the issue of possibly confusing the "solar only" plugs and outlets, you could use lockable outlet covers and plug lockouts for added safety (for visitors or those unfamiliar with the setup). You wouldn't even need to really lock them, just use a reusable ziptie and that should be enough to clue someone in that it isn't a "normal" plug/outlet.

The voice over format is fine. One of the reasons I follow you both is the knowledge you have to pass on. If this is the format that works best for you, then that's the format we get.

I like these. The information about sealants is good. Something people might be interested in is that vegetable oil is good to clean oil passed paint and tar off your hands. It also is good to help clean you hands after working on an engine. I keep a spay can like Pam around. Just use dish soap after to wash up.

I don't mind one of these now and again, I think that's pretty cool. It's amazing how much crossover there is between boats and RVs. Not that I have windlass switches on my RV but lots of other stuff is the same or very similar. Keep the good stuff coming. P.S. I hear that Emily has gotten acquainted with my youtube friend Amy from AmysSoloSailingAdventgures.

I might be mistaken but I believe of the leading causes of fires on small vessels is from the windlass wiring due to the high load and the distance it has to travel (most boats have their bats in the stern). If you do electrical work on your windlass system do not cut corners... Buy the right gauge marine grade wire, get good fuses you trust (not cheap crap from amazon) and be diligent.

90% Rubbing alcohol is actually a great general purpose solvent because a) its cheap, b) readily available, c) doubles as sanitizer & d) if it doesn't work on a small test U haven't lost much time. I only stock the 90% stuff, 70% obviously doesn't work as well & I keep a number of spray bottles on hand where handy (1 in each car for example)

Is there a backing plate on the capstan windlass portion? Can you describe it, if there is, please? I’m planning on installing two separate winches, using one switch hooked to a battery isolation switch (to be able to switch between the 5/16 and 5/8 chain winches). Wondering what sort of backing the winches require. PS: I hope we cross sailing paths someday.
@EmilyAndClark
@EmilyAndClark 3 күн бұрын
Yes there is a backing plate that ties into deck stringers that run beyond the mast. Every boat is different. If your deck is thin you need a big plate. If it's a steel boat maybe not. Overkill is beautiful

How did those screws have any "bite" left?
@EmilyAndClark
@EmilyAndClark 4 күн бұрын
Wood screws can be used in the same hole many times if you start them carefully and follow the existing thread. Basically treat them like machine screws and don't cross thread them. Takes a trained hand and is easily to learn by turning them backwards until you feel the "click" of the thread line up then driving them gently at first.
