This past September, during Shravan, Viola and I went for a Rann bhaji (forest vegetables) festival in Canacona on Septenber 2 and we had been wanting to visit Chaudi market for a while so we escaped from the festival briefly to check out this beautiful market.

Chaudi market is known for high quality vegetables and fish and fruit. We came to see if this is true. We entered the market from the south, Sadolxem side of Canacona. The northern entrance to Chaudi market is from the KTC stand side.
Look at those beautiful green fields beyond this market. We have fields around our Margao SGPDA market also but unfortunately they are quite full of trash.
We found fantastic karatein (bitter gourd), ghosale (ridge gourd), muska sango (drum sticks), methi, kothmir, valchi bhaji (long beans), knolkhol (naab), beetroot, pumpkins, nimboos, lady finger, Canacona Cola ganvtti chillies, namkeen, fried green peas, chivda, fresh groundnut.
We also found plenty of the fresh, local forest produce of Canacona being sold by the local vegetable vendors. They are tribal women who have collected this produce, a lot of it wild, and brought to sell.
We found bamboo shoots (killen), supari (arecanut), betel nut leaf (paan), ambade (hog plum), breadfruit (nirponnos), local cucumber (taushe), kokum solam, chepnim tor (small mangoes pickled in brine), podolim (snake gourd), local ladyfinger (bhende), dried herbs to make kasay and other health drinks, garlands of jasmine (zayo).
What we found here is forest produce, basically, the kind of greens which is found mostly in the monsoons. These are the heritage rann bhajis, or forest vegetables of Canacona.
Great quality radish and valchi bhaji, Malabar spinach leaves, taushes (local cucumbers), ambade, tender shoots of pumpkin, alsande (lobhia; blacked eyed peas) leaves, dry herbs, dried lemongrass and home pressed coconut oil.
There is also a big section of Chaudi market for pretty decent quality and very reasonably priced clothes, shoes, household goods, undergarments, you name it. All the plasticware, all the metalware you need for home and garden, you'll find it all here.
Inside the Chaudi market building itself there are very few shops. Not much to see there.
Since we had gone at the time, late in Shravan time, the dumroo sellers were out for the Ganesh Chovoth festival.
Now we leave the fruit and veg side and let's check out Canacona's famous fish market which apparently has the best fish in Goa at the best prices. We saw a lot of variety here: lepo (sole fish), tarle (sardines), bangde (mackerel), saundala (butter fish/trevally), mankyo (calamari), hapi (pony fish), sungta (prawns) and shevto (mullet; the state fish of Goa), dried fish (khare), stingrays, mud crab (kulleo), galmo, also somewhere
We were really impressed with the vivid colours of Canacona's beautiful market. What appetising vegetables and what fantastic fish.
Whenever you're the side of town for work or any reason, make sure you come to Chaudi market and take home some fantastic fish and the best quality fruit and veg, plus plenty of other bargains and clothes and household goods.
