Why do Ajax sell their players?

In the 2018/19 season, Ajax Amsterdam, the dark horses of that UEFA Champions League season nearly did the unthinkable of making it to the final and perhaps winning it with a very inexperienced squad. After such an amazing season, the world was waiting to see what this group of young players was going to do in the following seasons and was curious to see what the team’s coach Erik ten Hag was building.
This is why it came as a bit of a surprise to many when Ajax went on a selling spree at the end of that season.
Now, it is pretty normal for teams to sell some of their players to much bigger clubs, especially after a spectacular season. But Ajax transferred 17 players out that summer. Yes, 17 players left Ajax in just that one season. That was exactly what had people shocked!
But the truth is that if you have been a fan of Ajax Amsterdam or have been following the club for years, you would know that this is pretty common practice. The 35-time Eredivisie champions are known for developing amazing players and selling them to different clubs around Europe.
Now, Ajax is not exactly a small club. They are 4-time European champions, so, naturally one would expect that they would have some European ambition season-in season-out. And any football fan knows that no club with such aspirations would keep selling their best players in every transfer window.
So, the big question is why do they, Ajax Amsterdam, perhaps the biggest club in The Netherlands, repeatedly sell their best players?

Im pretty sure that Throughout Ajax's whole history thats what they have been pretty much. A club with an amazing academy that is constantly selling their players for money while having younger players replace them in the team.

Nonsense, the only reason the sell their best players nowadays is the bosman arrest in 1995 and the enormous amoubt of money in the big leagues that led to a buying spree at smaller clubs.

Ajax produced the biggest players all-time and if they didn't need to sell, Ajax would be unbeatable like they were in the past and the big unfair clubs only can with money.. just remember the stars: Cruijff, Rijkaard, Bergkamp, V Basten, Seedorf, Kluivert, Ibra, Suarez, Litmanen, Kanu, Sneijder, Davids, Huntelaar, VdSar, Sjaak Zwart, Frenkie, Ligt, Blind, Ziyech, Onana, Overmars nd many more left

Ajax academy and their business is so good they can afford to sell such good young players because they know they can buy more players and get many more good players from their academy and their scouting is really good aswell one of the only clubs in Europe whom can do that and I just think that’s amazing

Nowadays football teams needs to run as buisness , you need to earn money to run your team , thats called " capital gains" , sometimes they(small clubs) don't really have a choice..This shows how mega rich teams force small clubs to sell their biggest assets.... they need money and they don't have a choice! Some of these players would lose their value as they reach near the end of their contract.

What ajax needs to become much greater is a simply bigger league, if ajax could get into a top 5 league or maybe go through with the beneliga concept they would play against better clubs..get more money since people would watch it more and they would get more money for winning prices. Right now ajax is only becoming bigger and bigger while clubs like feyenoord are at the end of an era with the captain and best player going to ajax just because it’s a bigger and better club. Psv’s biggest talent might even go to ajax and imagine what that would mean. If something doesn’t change about the league ajax will be the bayern munchen of the netherlands with a balance higher than all clubs combined.

See my other reply, but I agree Ajax should stop cannibalizing on PSV and Feyenoord. They will catch up a bit if Ajax keeps setting the bench mark, and the Dutch league will get stronger for it. It should not lower it's own springboard that is the Dutch league because then it can't reach the higher stage of KO rounds of the CL anymore.

@@DenUitvreter you made some pretty good points but in my opinion it’s not ajax that needs to change. Clubs like feyenoord keep buying old and bad players like pratto which is most likely to fail and in the best scenario plays a couple of good years and retires. Ajax’s best cases which happen almost every year is to get cheap players, use them a few years and sell them for so much koneynthat the process starts agaain but with this money they can buy so many players. The thing what needs to happen is either dutch clubs start focussing on the youth and put their money in their academy or they should go forward with the beneliga so that clubs like ajax can play much bigger clubs like coub brugge, anderlecht and more. Sure you can blaim ajax for buying berghuis but who wouldn’t buy their “rivals” best player and captain if he wants to go and only costs 4 million. If Barcelona could have bought a huge real madrid player because they messed up the contract, they would instantly do it without a second of doubting

@@PROEMOES I do blame Ajax because Feyenoord is not a rival but should be. That's pennywise and poundfoolish in terms of performance. Ajax have to be the best of a relatively good Dutch league to have a chance of winning the CL again. The best of a weak Dutch League won't be good enough for the CL, so Ajax in this position of luxury should not weaken the 3rd biggest club. Barcelona is not long term on top of Real and their league is not at risk of becoming to weak for CL competitors. Ajax will loose the connection with the top of the CL again if it stops buying great talents which can be sold on to the really big clubs later and spends it's money on players like Berghuis who won't get much better anymore. When the greatest talents are sold to second tier clubs from the Bundesliga, France or mid table Italian clubs, ajax will be back to where it was 8 years ago again.

@@DenUitvreter you had some good points before but this is just straight up bullshit, last season 2 great young defenders came inti the first team, this year we have a brazillian striker, a great cam called victor jensen, we have fitz-jim, taylor and so many more young amazing players who are ready to become amazing footballers. Ajax has one of the best youth academies in the world and uses it. Every goddamn club would buy a great player one of the best of the league for just 4 million. You can blama ajax for buying 1 damn player from feyenoord but a few years back psv bought viergever from ajax, in about 2012 feyenoord bought the ajax keeper vermeer for 1 million because of the same contract problem. You can’t blame ajax for being a good and smart club and for buying 1 damn player from a club who is already dead, feyenoord isn’t third best, they are at best 4th and could easily end up below 5 because they are a shitty club which ajax has no blame in. And the bullshit about not getting into the ucl.. they can’t just ban the netherlands from the ucl because the league isn’t like the prem or the laliga. And have ur i fi straight because instead of the eredivisie falling down thry are actually growing and because of ajax they will have an extra spot in a few years. But on the blaming point, az was a club who would at best end up fourth but they weren’t even always set for a europe place. And just in these few years they have grown and attracted young talented players who now go out the door for around 15 million each like boadu and stengs with koopmijners ready to leave for maybe even more. So this club has never been really on top and they now are in the top 3 and close to winning the league during the corona pandemic. Now feyenoord had a reputation, money and great players but they still messed up by buying old bad players and always ended up wasting money while the rest was growing their fortune so instead of crying ajax should just give amateur clubs like feyenoord 50 mil which they would waste you should blame clubs like feyenoord for messing up everything and thinking damn..ajax really does a great job in the transfers and the youth.

Ajax cannot keep those players because they don't have the same budget as the "big" money based clubs. Football is sadly money based, the clubs that has ( or can lend) the most money has the best players and have the best chance to win in the champions league and in the end also earn the most money. Unfair system but that's how football is today.

This video can also say that if a player can earn much money somewhere else they won't sign a new contract. Players like Eriksen and Alderweireld where sold for very low pices because it was their last year. And players like Onana, Mazraoui and the year after it Gravenberch will leave for free. Players also have power.

Clearly this was made by someone who doesn't know exactly why ajax sells its players. You are just missing the most important point and that is TV money. Where the number 20 of the premier league already gets 100 million, ajax only gets 9 million from the Dutch tv rights. Ajax cannot compete with English, German or Spanish top teams financially. But if you are not rich, you have to be smart and that is Ajax. And as an Ajax fan, I dare say that Suarez and Zlatan were not trained in the youth of Ajax. In fact, Zlatan was at the time a record purchase for Ajax in 2001 for 7.8 million. And Suarez bought Ajax from Fc Groningen for 7.5 million Euros in 2007.

What needs to happened for clubs as Ajax to not have to sell there players is EUFA/FIFA to really enforce financial fair play. Clubs, mainly in England but not limited to England are bough as toys by very rich people or investment companies and they pump billions of pound, dollars or euro's in them. You simply cannot compete with these clubs who rather buy a player and have them on the bench so that they don't play with the opponents. How many players have been bought from the smaller leagues only to end up on the bench or not even made the squad then return after a few years not deemed to be good enough because they simply never had a chance to complete there development. Ajax, luckily have lifted the salary celling high enough for them to keep the youngsters a bit longer and complete there development before they leave. Eventually you will see that there will be an implosion, for which FC Barcelona is a good example and I doubt they will ever recover. I foresee the same for many other clubs as they do not have an academy to rely on and produce new fresh players. Once the money runs out so will the success... again a shining example: FC Barcelona. As an example, what will happened to Chelsea if Abramovic pulls out? I can tell you... the same route as FC Barcelona. Ajax might not be the biggest club and have to sell their players and though the income is nice to use as future investments it is a far better profit model dan the majority of the major European clubs and Ajax just plays the long game.

I can assure you that we arent eager to sell our best players at all, but we also know there is no way we can keep our players when big money from the 5 bigger leagues are knocking at the door. So you better sell your hide as expensive as possible, but funny thing is that Ajax is actually one of the most richest clubs in Europe. Cause unlike most clubs Ajax actually makes a profit and has its own money saved up. Teams in the bigger leagues might make more, but hardly have anything in the bank.

Another big factor why Ajax have to sell players is the duration of contracts. Ajax don't want players to sit out their contact and walk out the door a free agent. So if a player had one year left on his contract, and he doesn't want to extend ( probably because he can get better offers in bigger leagues). They basically have to sell them to make money and get an return on investment, for the whole academy program.

Its not helping. But when you denied players to leave when they want to, it creates an unpleasant atmosphere, it sends a wrong message to talents who ajax needs to sign for the club or players will get hesitant to renew contracts etc.... And once in a blue moon the squad is so good, a semi final CL should he possible again...like 2018/19
