Growing up in the eighties as an Indigenous person I've never known this song to be a protest song. It was written as of facts from the other side. I respect that. That is why I love this song and group.

A granny in Australia says...Hi Mr Heavy! I've binged with you for a couple of days, and sent regards in comments. Thank you for recognising and admiring Aussie bands which have not had sufficient hearing in my opinion. At nearly 80 I have heard SO much great homegrown music, and know that those who discover it are the richer. Google lyrics and read them as poetry. Aussies are the ultimate balladeers, and we have them to thank for "I was only 19", "And the band played Waltzing Matilda" , "You're the Voice", "Great Southern Land" "Affirmation" "Solid Rock" "Beds are Burning"...too many to mention.

My family used to go out to Geelong to spend time with relatives out in the country; and while we were there we would see a local country group called The Goanna Band play at some tavern. This would have been around 1976 to 1978. The Goannas were etched in our minds because they were one of the things we associated with our time in Geelong. Asides from that, we didn't give them a second thought. That was until 1982 when my sister and I were watching an episode of Countdown (a popular music TV show in Australia), and the voiceover announced the next act, Goanna. As soon as Shane Howard began singing, we knew it was the same band from Geelong and we screamed out to our parents to see it for themselves. It was quite a moment seeing how much they had changed in sound and look in comparison to how we remembered them in Geelong. The song was also striking. Nice to see you viewing this. I've just subscribed. Cheers, Hayley

This is a wonderful Australian song - it talks about the injustice to the indigenous people of our country. Shane Howard wrote this classic, still as meaningful today as when he wrote it. A very important song.

Shane Howard wrote some really good songs but none measured up to the heights this one set after more than forty years of airplay. He has worked with Aboriginal musicians, Troy Cassar Daley, Archie Roach, The Pigram Brothers and many more playing in the major cities, doing TV specials with orchestras or bush camps with local musos but this song has become something of a standard in the land rights debate and Aboriginal celebrations. He still plays it with as much conviction as he did then but it is, perhaps, as much a curse as a triumph for a creative writer.

Oh I loved goanna pronounced GO ANNA . They were quietly protesting through their music . This and let the Franklin flow . That was about a beautiful Forrest area and river that was damned and changed that part of Tasmania for ever. The dig in the background was haunting and poignant… Anyway thanks Mike another great song

One of the most important Aussie songs ever. I dunno, back in the 80s and 90s in the lead up to the Olympics it really seemed like we were on a path to reconciliation…..then thanks to the polarisation of politics, it all turned to tish and it feels like we are back at square one again.

It's a great song, but for the indigenous Australians, it deonstrstes pain up until today. The song is about the arrival of the British and the dispossession of the land and the distruction of the culture of the 7:19 peoples already in Australia. " They were standing on shore one day. Saw the white sails in the sun. . Wasn't long before they felt the sting; white man, white law, white gun..." "The winds of change coming down the line," were unstoppable. indeed. The indigenous were " living on borrowed time " Love the references to 'endlessness, dawn of time, dreaming, found paradise etc

Lead singer Shane Howard did a great protest song Let The Franklin Flow about stopping the damming of the Franklin River in Tasmania which would of wiped out a huge percentage of Tasmania its flora and fauna. I was just 14 at the time otherwise I would of been there protesting. You must check it out.

I bought their album “Spirit of Place” which has “Solid Rock” on it. The album cover somewhat resembles to me the Aboriginal flag being red at the top, black at the bottom and a yellow sun in the middle.
The band tried to have a more international sound on their next album Oceania which has a catchy song “Common Ground” whose clip was made in Europe. I have this album on vinyl. I wish "Common Ground" had have had more airplay I also have Shane Howard's (the main singer/songwriter) solo single “Back to the Track”. Very understated in the “Solid Rock” clip is the fact the drummer wars the football jersey of the Essendon VFL club - the Bombers. The VLF - Victoria Football League is now the AFL (Australian Football League).

Out here nothin’ changes Not in a hurry anyway You can feel the endlessness With the comin’ of the light ‘o day You’re talkin’ bout a chosen place You wanna sell it in a marketplace Well Well just a minute now You’re standin’ on Solid rock Standin’ on sacred ground Livin’ on borrowed time And the winds of change Are blowin’ down the line Right down the line Well round about the dawn of time The Dreaming all began A crowd of people came Well they were lookin’ for their promised land We’re runnin’ from the heart of darkness Searchin’ for the heart of light It was their paradise Well they were standin’ on Solid rock Standin’ on sacred ground Livin’ on borrowed time And the winds of change Were blowin’ cold that night Well they were standin’ on the shore one day Saw the white sails in the sun Wasn’t long before they felt the sting White man, white law, white gun Don’t tell me that it’s justified Cause somewhere Someone lied Yeah, well someone lied Someone lied Genocide Well someone lied And now you’re standin’ on Solid rock Standin’ on sacred ground Livin’ on borrowed time And the winds of change Are blowin’ down the line Solid rock Standin’ on sacred ground Livin’ on borrowed time And the winds of change Are blowin’ down the line Solid rock Standin’ on sacred ground Livin’ on borrowed time And the winds of change Are blowin’ down the line No!

Goanna are the GOAT. Listen to their more mellow Razor's Edge, written during the recession & huge unemployment in Aus. It's about struggling to hold on during hard times. Also a great song.

If you look at the American history of taking over lands and suppressing the indigenous tribes, limiting them from roaming the land as they used to, you'll understand. It's pretty much the same story here, except originally, it was selected as a prisoners island. But a lot of the people who were sent here were innocent people who got in the way of government crime. So it wasn't voluntary like in America. Anyway, I love this song and the awareness it brings. 💜💚❤️

Our two nations histories actually run parallel in many ways, when it comes to British colonisation and treatment of the indigenous peoples by them. It's a powerful song, but if it doesn't speak to you, it doesn't. I can't even remember how I felt about it on first hearing, so long ago. Often takes a while to like a song and people often expect reactors to instantly love something they've just heard, there are not too many songs that I just love on first hearing, it's not an easy thing you do Mike, I love your honesty and appreciate all your hard work. ❤

I like the way you always attempt to try saying names you are not familiar with. FYI: Goana is pronounced "go - anna". Once you roll your tongue around the word a couple of times, it then feels natural. A lot of animal names are broad articulation of aboriginal names. Even with some of the names of country towns, you need to twist your tongue; here is a example of a town from my state of South Australia: Nuriootpa, pronouonced nu - ri - oot- pa. Try saying it really fast.
