Thank you for a wonderful video. These pens are wonderful writing instruments. In memoriam (if you don't mind): My little brother Stephen Brown who lived to be 18 and died of cancer in 1975. Love and miss you Steve. You gave everyone a lot of joy. Now there's another Steve who likes to spread a little Christmas joy. Hope you don't mind, Mr Brown.

Stephen thank you very much for producing your GOAT broadcast! My favorite gift from 2015 for sure! I love your perspective since you see and come in contact with so many great pens during the year. My thanks also to Azizah for her great contributions to the hobby and her perspectives on the pens, papers and inks. I love and treasure my SBRE brown ink by the way. I am an ink w---- too and was pleased to see MB represented in your list of inks used for the GOAT pens although I have tasted none of them.

Merry Christmas Stephen and Azizah! Thanks so much for another year of entertaining videos, and have a healthy and happy 2016 filled with even more Viscontis for Dr. Brown (and all manner of "pretty" pens for Gourmetpens). And birds. For Lord Windermere of course. Lots of birds. Because he's 10 inches. It pains me so much to see the M800 Tortoise Brown. I found out about it too late (not knowing it was limited production), and now they are pretty much sold out everywhere.

Superb amundo Doctor, a really good presentation from the man from Visconti who says, Heyy There... Sorry hahaha ha. Well I was really hoping you or / and Matt Armstrong would end this year with something interesting to watch,. Loved the pens and the different inks... I'm going to try and get some of the toffee brown ink but I'm still playing with Lie de The and SBRE Brown / Brown, also trying to arrange regular practice time as you advised on one video for improving my penmanship. I've overdosed on your videos this year after a short break from the obsession and personally love it, the interest and passion you have for the hobby, along with the others on the hangout talk ins, hopefully there will be more of those coming along. So, my massive thank you and as always, my very best wishes. Your ACE. LeZc @@

Speaking of Pelikans, one of my recent GOAT finds was my vintage, early production, all original 400 tortoise shell BB nib. I searched forever to find one in regular BB as opposed to the obliques you see all the time. And, man, the search was worth it. It is such a vintage broad that it's basically what a modern italic nib would be but more refined. It's hard to explain without giving one to you but I'm using it almost daily now.

Having a few of the same pens including the Opera Master in Blue I have to agree it has a very special place in my collection as a Grail pen. It will stay there too as a Grail Pen until one better comes along to knock it off the top of the hill. I always enjoy your videos. I hope the Christmas letter made its way to you and your lovely better half by now. I had to go out today and take a Christmas Day motorcycle ride as the weather locally is outstanding.....plus 8 or 9 C and dry pavement. Back to pens I think you need to check out a hand turned Ken Cavers pen and get one. I am sure the Bock nibs come in kits but what can I say it truly belongs on a GOAT list for tuning and of course once you pick your materials you will love the 1 of 1 nature being added to your collection. Merry Christmas!

A very nice selection. I was unaware of many of these pens. Thanks for showing them. My GOAT's would have included the pen that got me interested in FP's too. A Montblanc Bach. It was that perfect proportioned G-Clef on the clip AND the color. No mention of a149? I also couldn't pass up on the Visconti Speakeasy. I got a fine due to the limited ink volume in a converter that FPH found. I wound up with SN 0003. I wonder if he had 0007? That would have been cool! I have a design for a converter that should fit inside the pen but I need to 3D print it. That would be an interesting video. The model needs more work but it's doable. I've also have a design for a 3D printed pen stand / 9 pen holder. Maybe I should post a video on how I do it. (With what resolution do you record your videos?) I too have issues with some of the Noodlers pens (your comments below) but they are easy to fix and well worth the effort. I've tuned the Neponset nib on both sides of the center tine and now it's my favorite pen. I've ordered two more and I will probably have to do the same. Since Visconti is so prevalent I'm surprised I didn't see the volcano pen in bronze. It's a great writer however it is sans ink window. Happy Holidays... Dave

The Akkerman Parker Duofold is a modern take on a 1930s Duofold that they sometimes called 'Chinese Red' . My everyday writer is a 1937 model. These originals were button fill.

Stephen, I love your reviews and your videos and keep buying the pens you love because obviously you're buying them for the writing experience, but I have to say the end result of using those wet broads looks like you were writing with a marker. Try writing on two line spaces or one and half, so the writing matches the line width. Also I was sad to see your E-motion didn't make the list this year, I feel as though beauty and aesthetics dominated the decision making process this year.

I always enjoy these end of the year Goat pen assessments. Wonderful. But being a woman these pens don't hold much interest, not because of price but because they are HUGE. Any way Azizah could be persuaded to do a goat pen video for the other half of the audience? And I wouldn't mind a top 5 or 10 ink assessment either, although year to year, I doubt as many new inks come out as pens. Thanks for all you do! Highly entertaining and wishing you a Happy New Year!

So is Bespoke British Pens assembling and selling pens from Conway Stewart parts as well as selling pens which were assembled by Conway Stewart from Conway Stewart parts? If so, is there any way to tell which pens were assembled by Conway Stewart and which by B.B.P.? Would you imagine there to be any noticeable difference in quality? Hi Steven, very much enjoy the videos. I have a question that I wasn't able find a lot of information online concerning celluloid. Seems a lot of your better liked pens are constructed with celluloid & I wonder if you've given any thought to the possibility celluloid rot. Coming from the straight razor shaving hobby, celluloid rot seems to come up now and then, and once a razor is affected, can corrode the steel & potentially spread to other razors that are stored together. Seems to be something that affects vintage celluloid some what like a time bomb. I'm surprised I haven't found any talk of this effect in the community. Perhaps there may be some differences in the type of materials that we're talking about. However, considering the cost of some pens I was curious to see if you have any thoughts apologies in advance if this is a random place to post this question - hope you get it

The funny thing about fountain pens is: I received a duofold for free from my grandfather. Great writer. I also have some really cheap fountain pens that are good writers. My Twsbi's are mediocre at best and those go for around 70-90 dollars. If you get into the hobby... my advice is: Just buy some fun not too expensive pens and check out which ones you like. Maybe treat yourself to a nice pen. But my most expensive pen is not even close to my favorite writer.

I loved your Visconti pens and especially the Opera Elements for its size. You said we should look for the 14K nib. This is what I found and it says it is flex. Is this correct? " Opera Elements dark amber fountain pen. Visconti's 23kt palladium Dreamtouch large semi-flexible Fine nib (gold-plated) adorns this beauty". Is this nib added later or from manufacturer? If I buy it this would be my first expensive pen., so I have to be careful. Hope you see this NOTE. The large 3 ens were outstanding as well - as the Titanic, but not my preferred size... You collection is amazing. Thanks!

Id say the montblanc 149 and lamy 2000 may deserve some places up there, maybe not the best since visconti is quite a true marvel and beauty to look at.
@SuperLegendaryBanana
@SuperLegendaryBanana 8 жыл бұрын
+Alex G Why Lamy 2k? There are plenty of pens in that price range I would consider better.
@opulan
@opulan 8 жыл бұрын
ExplosiveRocketTurtle That may not be true though, since the lamy 2k has been an icon for a while now similar to the 149 in many ways, although less noticeable probably from the lesser if at all marketting lamy does. Its got a good design, performs very well (if you can get to grips with the sweet spot) and above all it gives you a sense of holding a part of history
@SuperLegendaryBanana
@SuperLegendaryBanana 8 жыл бұрын
+Alex G Good design is subjective. I find it meh. And the ink window is awful. I have pens that perform better, and don't have a small sweetspot to deal with. I guess so. Many pens would fit that bill though.
@opulan
@opulan 8 жыл бұрын
ExplosiveRocketTurtle While i guess thats true, but it has a place in the museum of modern art which is above most other pens in this range. The design i can agree is pretty divisive since its a super minimalistic look which may or may not be everyones cup of tea.

+sbrebrown I have the 18k nib of an Omas Milord Arco as well, and I think that it reminds me a lot of the 23k Pd nibs. Very soft, but not wide flex. What do you think of the 23k Pd nibs?

+Christopher Chen I like them, but the last ones I've used were very finicky.

I'm sure there's no real danger in it doing this with the pens in this video, but shaking fountain pens just makes me tense. It's a splatter of ink waiting to happen.

+UchIHa AvaNgeR I personally wouldn't think of any one montblanc as GOAT; perhaps if it were the Greatest Brands of All Time- although even there, montblanc is an overrated brand I think :)

but the Tolstoy writing edition is divine ,the finish is to dye for,and the nib is a 6 winged angel ,yeah the meisterstuck range is overrated definitely ,but the writers editions are out of this world,in my opinion

Request, can you at some point show different kinds of nibs that you talk about? Like the hebrew grind and the architect nib? I've never seen onen or how they write.

+Jason Tay I think that the Nib Creaper and Ahab belong on the GOAT list because they really spurned a renewed interest in fountain pens when they were introduced. Not to mention that they are a great value....

Hmmm. In that sense, I guess they do deserve recognition, after all it did bring attention to flex nib fountain pens recently but, performance-wise, probably not.

Since Noodler's Liberty's Elysium destroyed the diaphragm of my Edison Menlo and I bought a Noodler's Neponset that simply did not write (as did many others), I was cured of the brand.
