I have alot of toxic stuff growing wild on my property. The main toxic things I have growing are wild are Holly, Carolina Jasmine, Wax Myrtles, poke berries, and dog fennel. My goats don’t really mess with them. I don’t cut them down either. If they don’t eat something then I assume it’s toxic.

Wow, I just like goats, and I've been considering getting 2-3 goats, not only for clean up, but as pets and guards. I'm so glad I saw this video during my research. I have/had some of these plants on my property, and I want to eradicate those before I bring goats in. Wish you the best.

Just thought I’d add that, apparently, buttercup is ok dry, as are cherry leaves if they are fresh or dry ONLY, wilted will kill! Also, I’ve seen our goats selectively eat some of the poke leaves. They only eat off it at certain times of the year so maybe it’s a medicinal thing for them. 🤷‍♀️ We don’t have much in the pasture, but there’s one spot where it comes over the fence where they will go nibble. I’ll have to look for some of those other plants. I know I’ve seen horse nettle, dog fennel, and a little of that mint, but I’ll have to keep my eyes peeled for lantana; I don’t think I’ve ever seen that one.

Box elders are pretty much the only trees on my property. My goats eat them all the time, love them, no issues. I looked up box elder, and never saw it on a toxic to goats list. Ugh, the internet can be frustrating!

Suggestions for ridding a pasture of perilla mint? Our goats don't eat it (they have loved on our farm longer than us) but we want to get another goat at some point. We've been over seeding with pasture grass seed, mowing and hand pulling. It has gotten a lot better but has been tough to get rid of. Any other suggestions appreciated!

I haven't dealt with it in any kind of abundance, I just see one here and there so I hand pull them and never researched what would be a better way to eradicate them. I'm sure there is something, I just don't know offhand.

I have a friend whose property borders onto a hobby farm. there is a pasture that was over grown with alders bushes. over a 2 or 3 years the goats had them gone. Since then a majority of the field grew became covered with golden rod. The goats are now grazing the grass in and around the plants but the golden rod alone. Is golden rod toxic to goats?
@StacyAlan77
@StacyAlan77 9 ай бұрын
I don't know much about goldenrod, but my approach is that if I am unfamiliar or don't know, I won't let them eat it.

Im confused ?Here in OZ We all use goats to keep lantana under control.? Can we talk more about this. Also been loosing my alpacas. Don't know why they died
@StacyAlan77
@StacyAlan77 2 жыл бұрын
there's a lot of plants toxic to ruminants like alpacas, goats, cows. I wonder if the lantana was responsible for losing yours. Animals don't always know what plants to avoid. Mine would always try to eat box brush and azaleas if I let them. If I see a plant unfamiliar to me, I will try to ID it and see if it is ok for goats or if its toxic. If it falls under the toxic category, I will try to rid the area of them or not allow the goats near it. Some plants are more toxic than others and you may have seen a goat eat the plant before and appear fine, but it could be harmful to them.

If there is alot of other stuff for them to eat . Would they stay away from plums and peaches. Or do they need kept away from the trees?
@StacyAlan77
@StacyAlan77 2 жыл бұрын
That's a good question. Stonefruit like plums, peaches, cherries, almonds are toxic to goats and they really shouldn't be allowed to eat them. Some goats won't bother with those trees, and others may just go and eat them. I had peach and plum trees in my yard planted away from the goat pen so none of leaves accidentally fell in their area. It's wise to just keep them away and not experiment with something like that.

Hi my goats in the Philippines have been eating avocado leaves close to year now with no problem .. do I need to stop feeding them avocado leaves .?? Thnx
@StacyAlan77

I would absolutely stop feeding them avocado leaves. Just because they haven't showed signs of sickness doesn't mean it isn't doing damage to the animal.

My goats eat some of them and seem fine. The neighbor has cows and horses, and they also eat it just fine. I'm not sure if it's a different species, or maybe I'm didn't identify it correctly.

they are, most stone fruit leaves are similar and can be deadly when wilted. Fresh or completely dry won't bother them as much.
