Next part of the review detailing more information about the nature of the fault affecting my new GoCycle G4i e-bike.
And it’s subsequent repair….
Apologies for the middle section containing upside down GoPro footage. If causes motion sickness please lock your “tilt” function on your smartphone or tablet and watch that section upside down to right the image!
Or lay your tablet or smartphone flat on a table and rotate around.
Apologies if you are watching this on a PC or laptop if neither of these are possible.
However it is the sound rather than the image in that section that is more important.

Thanks so much for the great review! It’s hard to find solid information on this bike. Disappointing that you are having issues. I’m more torn now than ever. If you can find a big hill for the next review that would be nice. You are a fantastic reviewer, keep it up! Curious to see your wife’s option.

I think your wife made the best choice and saved a substantial amount of money in the process. For me buying from a local shop with its own workshop was important. My local shop is an Eovolt dealer. Bike and dealer service both first class.

I purchased a vintage electric tracker from Fully Charged. Great shop and always there to help with any issues. Cant recommend them enough. I ordered a G4i for my partner but lots of delays atm. Will probably wait for next year now and give Gocycle a chance to iron out any issues they seem to be having. Thanks for the video.

Probably agree with that. I am a big believer in the theory you best purchase a product at least a year or two after it comes to market so all the niggles are ironed out by the time you own it. You lead a much less stressful and much happier life as a result. This is the first time I have bought a tech product when new to market. Fully Charged said I was their very first G4i customer delivery in the UK! But unable to get a GXi last year as sold out during pandemic and as 4th generation of the bike I thought less of a risk. Time will tell!

Thanks for the review mate. Like the look of the bike and was thinking about getting one, but after hearing about the bikes breakdowns and the price £5000+ I won't bother. I'll keep watching your reviews of the gocycle. Hope that you and the gocycle have a good relationship.

It was very very expensive at £4k but now incredibly priced at £5k! At least the lights and mudguards are now “included!” LoL! Still lovely to ride and enjoying every ride. Just had its first service. One or two little issues had cropped up. Both sorted. Will post a review soonish. I have friends who are keen cyclists and apart from having numerous bikes, they can cost over £10k eg- electric mountain bikes etc. I just think everything is now crazy expensive. Like cars etc. MM

Had my GX3 for a few years, no major issues. Had to send it back to the head office near me, but fixed in a few days. Was the kick stand and throttle button. Now ordered the GXi+ this week, will keep you posted. I love the bikes. Amazing to ride. I hope I have no issues with new bike.

Congrats. Do you mean the G4i+? Got in before the massive price rises due in the New Year! They are lovely to ride. I hope mine remains reliable as well. I live much further away from head office. MM

Don’t worry, my GoCycle is still going strong with no problems. First build teething issues? This issue never reoccurred. The slight scraping noise that was there after repair,I was reassured by other owners that it was the hydraulic disc brakes bedding in and would disappear. It did. Still beautiful and silent riding. Ridden less over the winter but will start riding frequently again soon! MM

Hopefully they get it sorted. Have not had any similar issues since with mine. The slight intermittent scraping noise when I got the bike returned to me may have been the hydraulic brake disc rubbing as other owners said they had the same noise which eventually disappeared. My noise also disappeared so it is back to being very quiet and smooth again. MM

Interesting. After using an electric hire bike on the Ile De Ré last year, I decided I would like an electric bike. I liked the Van Moof but there seemed to be build quality issues. I did a bit of research and like the Gocycle and ordered a G3+ in September last year. When the bike was delivered to the dealer, there were paint defects and he offered me a G3C, but at extra cost. I decided to go with this as would have to wait even longer for a new G3+ to arrive. In February the dealer came and personally delivered the Do like it a lot and initially went on rides that I would not have considered before. The ergonomics of the bike are superb. However I have had a problem with second gear that does not engage correctly and the noise is lot worse than with yours. Also On Demand doesn’t work. It is due a first service and I am waiting for the dealer to come to me ( I live in rural France). I am just wondering if quality control is a good as it should be. Also lights should be standard on a bike of this price. I am also not keen on the elastics designed to hold your phone. There should be something more robust ir befitting of a bike at this price.

Hope you get yours sorted. I believe the bikes are assembled in a new factory in Hungary. Or at least mine would have been.There may of course be QC issues to begin with. That may have been the cause of my issue or could have been a one off. . Not sure about the G3 line. The phone grip does look naff and unbecoming for a bike at this price BUT a phone holder would be bigger,probably rattle over time and may have interfered or got bent during the folding or storage process like putting it in the boot of a car. The rubber bands are cheap, quiet and if and when they perish will be cheap (I hope!) and easy to replace. Sometimes I ride with my iPhone as a dashboard. Mostly I don’t. Just get on and ride. A better inbuilt dash display SHOULD be the answer. May be for the G5!

To me is sounded very much like a rubbing disc brake at the rear. Perhaps the pads eventually bedded in to decrease the sound.

Great videos. I have a gocycle gx and I’m pretty sure your second noise is the disc brake rubbing a little, so it’ll probably disappear over time. Mine rub and make that same noise if I take corners very quickly. Enjoy the bike, I’ve had mine nearly a year and it’s been great so far.

Interesting video Mark. I noticed the GoCycle box that your bike was returned in. GoCycle offers a case into which you can place the folded bike and I believe it zips closed and it has wheels to let you drag it around. I see that as useful when loading our 2 bikes into our van for a trip to a start destination. Our van also holds our golf bags and other space-taking stuff. However the GoCycle cases would protect the bikes from getting scratched. However the cases are very expensive, and I am wondering if you think the GoCycle box would serve the same purpose, and if so, I could approach the bike store where we recently ordered/purchased the bikes to let us keep the boxes, then the boxes could be used for protecting the bikes in the van, although we could not drag the bikes around in the boxes.

Those luggage cases are designed more for travelling abroad such as on a plane etc. where they would be put in a hold potentially. Or regular long distances. GoCycle do recommend you keeping the cardboard box it comes in, in case of future repairs or sending it away for servicing if very far away etc, but when I got my GoCycle I rode it home from the shop so no box! Ironically I ended up getting one anyway sent to me as part of the repair. When folded the bike stands upright on its kick stand. Would there be anyway you could strap them down or place cushions or some other soft packaging in between them to stop them moving around? The box would protect it for sure but makes the whole package much larger. But if your van is big enough then yes the box would be protective enough.

I had an issue with my Gocycle GS wheel and have to say it was sorted promptly with excellent communication. I would say getting the bike repaired and returned in a week is pretty good. That second scraping noise is odd but a good sign that it is diminishing. Might just need "running in/loosening up"...? If it persists then definitely get it looked at. At least you know the manufacturer and retailer offer good after sales support (as they should given the cost of the product)

Yes. Hoping it is a ‘bedding in” type issue requiring a bit of time. May be new lubricant application gradually spreading around?

@@markymarkreviews yes could be. Whatever it is at least the cleandrive is full of “old school” oily bits and should be easy to diagnose/sort out if necessary - as opposed to the witchcraft going on at the front wheel…!

hopefully you won't run into more problems down in the future with your G4., I personally owned a G2 for around 6 years was great to be able to use one at 25MPh which you can't do anymore. was a pretty cool bike, don't ride a Gocycle anymore though

Where could you use yours with that top speed? Maximum motor assisted speed in the UK for an e-bike is just over 15 mph.(25 km/h) . In the USA they are allowed up to 20mph.

Only just purchased my G4i and have been baffled by an intermittent 'click'ing noise from the crank generated each time at the same pedal position whilst pedaling. Nearly impossible for me to reproduce. It stops now and again but I know at some point it will just begin clicking again. I've greased the seat post, seat clamps, etc. so I've opened a support case. I'm keen to open the CleanDrive but I haven't the tools nor the skills to do much about it. A small thing yes, but bit maddening.

Do you have a local authorised GoCycle repairer? Keep me informed about GoCycle’s response and what the issue was. Us owners should be able to collect data on common issues or faults to look out for for future owners. This is one thing the internet and social media can be good for. When I got mine a year ago, there was no information available. Only from GoCycle or e-bike shops selling GoCycles! So not impartial reviews. Not had any major issues with mine since the bearing failure and still loving it. Will do an update video soon. MM

Would love one of these for my London commute but worried someone banging me over the head for my Gocycle given you can probably flog it the same day for a reasonable amount of cash. Bad enough the locals eyeing up my phone when I attach it to a Limebike fingering the cleavers beneath their tracksuits!

My family were a bit concerned about me riding the GoCycle in London as well! Crime has become depressingly out of control there. My 2-3 trips have been uneventful travelling from Central London to the East/NE London area. Both during the day time though. The Cycle Superhighways are really good. MM

I'm about to plunge...please do an uphill vid using max motor settings in app. How little sweat/pedalling can you manage regardless of battery drainage? I think it's clear I'm not in it for the workout

I can neither confirm or deny that depending on which country you tell the GoCycle app, you are living in, then you may have access to the full “throttle mode” accessed via a twist collar next to the left hand grip. This apparently can accelerate you up to speeds of 15+ mph without the need to pedal at all. Then hills become very easy indeed in case you run out of stamina. All hypothetical of course. 😉

I had the same issue on the GX a wile ago.. the exact same! It vanished over night without doing anything.. and never came back... I have still no clue why...

Part 4 being posted soon and Yes, the noise has gradually disappeared so GoCycle feels and sounds back to normal so all is right with the world!

@@markymarkreviews The new noise was just the disc brake pad not being perfectly aligned. The pad will get scratched after a while and become quieter or completely gone.

To be fair, I knew that I was probably picking up the very first G4 model for public consumption. They also had a new factory. So I was half expecting to suffer “teething issues” ,high price or not. The loud noise was a failed bearing. The scratchy type noise post repair, other owners of previous GoCycle G models, told me was probably the hydraulic brakes bedding in and would disappear. It has done. I will be doing a 1 year review soon and it remains an excellent and super smooth , quiet and fun bike. Have only done 600 miles though. MM

Will do an update video soon. And then a 1 year review. Still loving mine. Do you use yours for commuting and recreation? MM

@@markymarkreviews I had my first service last weekend as well. I was informed that the bike is in good condition. Usually, I use my bike to go to work and back home, almost 20 km each day.
