Have had a lot of feedback asking about the EoVolt Confort e-bike that has featured briefly and that my wife mainly uses.
So in this episode, I will cover the features and design and ride impressions of this half price competitor to the GoCycle.
It occupies a different price level than the GoCycle but the features and range seem very similar.
Can it give the GoCycle a good run for its money?
Let’s find out!

Thanks for sharing this very thorough review Mark! It sounds like the eovolt is in my opinion the best fold up to go for if you want reliability, solidness, and dual town / mild off road capability. It looks like the eovolt has no design faults unlike the other more futuristic looking bikes. For people who are new to e bikes especially fold ups, the most important features you need are reliability, the availability of parts (like gear replacement) locally and a solid battery that won't surprise you by cutting out when you're in the middle of nowhere. I'm so glad I watched Mark's videos otherwise I'd have gone for a futuristic bike to discover that the app required doesn't even work on my phone!! I;m definitely a Francophile so am looking forward to trying the eovolt :)

Another very useful and fun video. Would be really good if you could do a video for G4i's accessories for such as lights, mudguards, bags, racks, etc ^_^

I have a GoCycle GX but switched to the Carbo S (11.5 kg, carbon fiber, 20 inch wheel, folding e-bike). The Carbos are much more powerful, faster, lighter and easier to adjust or fix the parts. The thumb throttles on the Carbos are way more powerful than the GoCycle thumb throttles. Plus the Carbos only cost $2200. I used to love the GoCycle design but it's too expensive for what it is and way too slow for me, particularly the weak throttle on the GoCycle.

Did you manage to experience the new 2022 version as I was looking to purchase due to the improvements made on the bike but wanted to know if the motor still makes a fair bit of noise? Or any thoughts on your experience? 👍

Hi mark, what are your thoughts on the tyres through winter would you be thinking of changing them?
@markymarkreviews
@markymarkreviews 2 жыл бұрын
Not sure! GoCycle don’t seem to suggest a change for winter. The tread on the tyres are fairly “slick” as built for low drag,high efficiency. I did test ride the GoCycle in the pouring rain before purchase but at slow urban speeds. Going downhill fast and braking hard in the pouring rain will be interesting! Will find out soon enough as autumn now here and weather getting worse.

Thanks for this, i have a similar e-bike with which i'm not happy at all. When the motor kicks in it is nothing similar to a bicicle, rather a moped... at full speed the pedals are basically spinning with no traction. I was interested in understanding if the Gocycle rides more smoothley, and if the motor is able to help in a progressive way (just as a torque sensor would do). Looking at the price I would expect so, but I haven't been able to finde any specific comment on it. Can you provide your perspective on this? Thanks
@markymarkreviews
@markymarkreviews Жыл бұрын
Hi. If there was one word to describe the GoCycle, it would be “smooth!” And as it has the torque sensor the motor assist does help out in a very smooth way also, but the app allows you to set by how much or not have any assistance at all. I ride mine in a pre-set “City” mode. This gives a large amount of e-boost away from stationary so perfect for traffic light getaways when you have cars near and behind you. The e-motor assist then reduces to zero as your cadence levels off so your legs are then solely doing all the work after that. Very clever and very intuitive programming. The e-motor is very very quiet on the G4 series also. I would still advise you to arrange a test ride if possible to see if it suits your particular needs. MM

Thats is difficult answer. If very light/loose gravel-no problems.But thick/deep sharp edged stones and mud probably best to avoid.

That’s my only issue with the Gocycle - I find it very restricted to only city tarmac road riding. If it was versatile enough to take on like trails then I could probably justify more to part with buying one…have you taken it off road at any point and if so, was it comfortable and did it handle well?
@markymarkreviews
@markymarkreviews Жыл бұрын
@@MM-pb1se I have done but unintentionally! Started off on a nice tarmac path which gradually got rougher and rockier ! Or in one case muddier and muddier in a forest! .Handled it all well, but these tyres on the GoCycle are pretty "slick" (not much tread depth at all or indeed tread!).I turned around in the former case and muddled on through in the latter until I was back on tarmac!

Interesting that you have the Eovolt weighing 22kg, I bought one earlier this week and it should be coming this weekend, the weight was the reason I decided to get it because I have to carry it up two flights of stairs so if the weight is not accurate and it's 4kg more than advertised I will have to return it.
@markymarkreviews
@markymarkreviews 2 жыл бұрын
If you are in the UK then it comes fully loaded with lights,mudguards and the rear rack. I suspect it is the rear rack the bumps up the weight. Should be easy to remove. But if you have bought it and believed it was 18kg as advertised in the pictures with rear rack etc then yes that would be a reason to return it. GoCycle advertise the G4i at 16.6kg. My measurement was 17.7kg. 1.1kg heavier. I bought this up with GoCycle who said their specified weight is without the kickstand! But the kickstand is an essential part of the folding mechanism of the GoCycle so why specify a weight without it? That is why I ALWAYS confirm the weight on my scales - which are accurate. No more than 0.1kg out at worst. The EoVolt is a great bike. Removal of the rack “should” bring the weight down. Depends if you really wanted the rack though. MM

You might wish to consider a Brompton Electric. The battery luggage clicks off instantly which leaves you with a 13.7kg bike to carry up those stairs (that’s the two gear version - six gear version is 0.9kg heavier).

@@petergilbert72 Thanks for the info, I have had the Eovolt Confort for a few weeks now and I love it, it is a bit heavy but not that hard to carry upstairs because the main bar is low you just bend your knees to pick it up and stand upright. when I first got it, I would roll it along the landing on the first floor to rest for the second flight but now I just lift it at the bottom and carry it all the way up so it's not that bad.

Hi Marky. Have you had yours serviced? If so, from Fully Charged in London? Or locally in Wales?
@markymarkreviews
@markymarkreviews 2 жыл бұрын
GoCycle recommended a service once a year or 2000 miles. Am only approaching 250 miles so far in 2 months. Visual inspection advised to do by the owner at 500 miles. No authorised GoCycle dealer in Wales anymore. Used to be one in Cardiff. So unless somebody else steps in, will be taking mine back to London and the Fully Charged team.

Interesting review and bike. £2000 was the launch price of the now discontinued Gocycle GS though without lights and mudguards. I wonder why they didn’t keep this in production as a “budget” model. It is not a fast folder so I don’t think it would have cannibalised sales of the G4 It looks like it would be a faff to sort a puncture on that bike - I didn’t see any quick release levers on the wheels. That for me is a major advantage of the GoCycle’s design.
@markymarkreviews
@markymarkreviews 2 жыл бұрын
Yes. One of the major advantages of the GoCycle G4 design. No need to remove the wheel to repair a puncture. To be fair though, one of the great advantages of these compact folding e-bikes is if the worst happens and it’s pouring with rain, you can always get on a bus, train or call a cab to get home taking the bike with you. Will be a lot more cumbersome with the EoVolt- it does not roll as well as the GoCycle, and the magnets holding the two halves together give up to easily once you try lifting it! But for general storage in a garage, cupboard or under the stairs, it works well enough.

There is also the first 100-mile service? I have my G4i delivered a few days ago but having a bit of an issue with servicing because I bought mine online from a store 200 miles away. Currently exchanging emails with Gocycle customer service about it :-(

Ironically 100 miles (it was 93 miles actually) was when it went back to GoCycle for the repair (rear bearing failure) so I guess that counted as the first service for me! It better had done anyway. Would not have been impressed if after sending it 150 miles back to me they then said it required a service after my next short ride.

Most definitely not. My bike is also set up with Predictive gear shifting but is very stable. Because it has 20” wheels then the bike is far more agile feeling than a bike with more standard larger wheels but it still rides very straight and true. Either you have to get used to the bike a bit more or there is a problem with yours. MM

IMHO ebikes are over priced regardless of brand, design and technology. Electric motors is not a new technology. Battery tech is moving at speed of snail. Fitting and optimizing it to bicycles is not a big deal. Most are very heavy to peddle when battery is dead. Motor need a high fork, cadence and sense of paddling only in action when overcoming bumps and inclines but freewheeling resulting in smaller sized higher volt & amp battery.

Electrical failure twice in 15 months and lengthy repair period (7 weeks and counting) and horrendously obnoxious people in charge of consumers has driven me to call this a Nocycle. That marketing line of it being maintenance free is of course absolute bullax. I would spend my hard earned money elsewhere, unless you want an expensive bike to keep in your closet or show off to your friends once a while. But if you really really want one my advice would be: read long term reviews and try squeezing longer warranty time out of them.
@markymarkreviews

Interesting and concerning. The very reason that I wanted to do a long term “warts and all” owners review as there were simply no long term reviews out there and basically no reviews of the G4 range. You based in the UK or abroad? My supplying dealer (Fully Charged in London) have been supportive and on the ball which has helped a lot when needed (Part 3). But will update my review as time goes by. If it is unreliable and becomes problematic as a bike I will report back and say so. Been good and enjoyable so far but early days for me in the lifetime of a e-bike. MM

@@markymarkreviews Hi. I understand that the G4 range is new and hence the absence of long term reviews. I have experienced the GXi which was the top of the line at the time. Marketed just as aggressively and with similar slogans. Upgrades are as far as I know a slight increase in power and a USB slot and almost an 800 euro's price increase. (In the Netherlands). The bike is still being manufactured in Poland. (Lower production costs). As far as looks and material use, it is a unique product. However based on my experience with the GXi, if you are planning to use it on a daily bases I would question the reliability vigorously. As I mentioned before ask for extended full warranty. Especially given the price.
