Malacath has always been my favorite Daedric Prince, despite his origins and his back story, it reminds me of the orcs from LOTR cause can you imagine if Malacath commanded all orcs in an army, similar to how the hist can command the argonians, seeing 100 orcs coming at you head on with malacath running at you in their ranks would be terrifying!

Its shame you guys to didn't mention the orc version of transformation of Trinimac to Malacath though, because unlike other versions of the myth, in the orcish version Trinimac transformed himself into Malacath by "tearing out the shame from his spirit" after he was banished to the Ashpit by Boethiah. This version has a lot of implications for Malacath as character. sure Trinimac most likely turned himself into Malacath out shame for getting tricked by Boethiah but what if it goes deeper? Maybe Trinimac also transformed himself into Malacath due to the shame and guilt he felt for for killing Lorkhan?

theory: the term 'orc' has changed in meaning over time: it used to be a catch-all term for the remnant-races of the previous kalpa; trolls and goblins and giants, et al. When some Mer suffered a similar fate, their un-changed kin called them 'orcs' as a slur.

I agree with Drew that the story of Malacath could have been twisted in order to make the God himself and his followers look worse off than others, but I could absolutely see in the Elder Scrolls lore that he was infact eaten and then shat out. It would make you question how literal other stories are in the universe.

My thoughts about excrement being less literal is to do with daedra lords *being* their spheres. For example, it could be Boethiah corrupted him by twisting his mind towards the padomaic perspective, changing his followers view of him by speaking through him, before dragging his domain from aetherius intooblivion. His tranformation through bring devoured, changed, and ejected could make sense in lore when viewed more metaphorically.

What if the connection is that Trinimac was a Dwemer god, and Dumac was an avatar of his similar to a Shezarrine? That would explain Volendrung and the Dumalacath thing at the same time.

It really is cool to see how much of Malacath's teachings are basically Malacath having a hissy-fit over being tricked and humiliated by Boethiah. Feel terrible for Malacath, the spurned Trinimac, wronged and backstabbed and humiliated. Like, seriously, look at his short but action packed story in the Dawn/Early Meredith Era. First his brother Lorkhan betrayed and lied to him, which he then defeated, tearing his treacherous heart from his Bastard chest, he saw Old Ehlnofey/Aldmeris sundered, and wept to see the destruction and desolate world of early Mundus. Then the traitor Veloth lead Aldmer astray to the forces of Padomay, and he tries to stop them, and beats the Oblivion out of Boethia until Mephala comes and stabs him in the back. The he gets absorbed and then expelled as a less grand, Oblivion tainted self. I hope one say an Altmer or something mantles the open spot Trinimac left behind, maybe with Malacath's help. And maybe the New Trinimac will fight Talos, the new Lorkhan, at the end of this Kalpa. And maybe revenge on Boethia and Mephala as well. I like how Malacath is essentially an "Anuic" Daedra. (Also;) Sad to see you guys went over looking into the "Place that once was" in his Realm. Some say it's a part of the Original Aedric power within him, a place that shows what Trinimac "once was", at least that's how I see it. The leftover part of his more Aedric early days.

23:30 - This DOES make sense for the small-scale tribal lifestyle that the orcs do live though. These tribes have very limited resources. So making sure that only the strongest people survive and reproduce makes sense because they only have so many resources to expend and in that case it makes sense the expend them on the strongest.

Something I really love about the Elder Scrolls is that no race is really inherently evil (saving maybe the Sload, but they're outliers lol). I feel like a lot of fantasy worlds just go the Tolkien route and make Orcs straight up evil bloodthirsty savages, and I appreciate the sort of sympathetic role the orcs here get. I've always found their sort of despised position in society and Malacath's origin story interesting.

Thank you guys for this podcast. Perfect timing, I must say. I am currently writing a fanfiction, short story based in Elder Scrolls universe and I had some problems you've just cleared with this Malacath video. For those interested here is the synopsis: a nord woman became a victim of sexual assault, the offender is jarl's brother (he is also a judge in this case) and he has a good reputation. She couldn't prove him guilty and people started gossiping about her, you know, how she lost her honor doing such a baseless accusations, how she wanted to posses jarl's brother's money etc. She became an outcast, withdrew from public life and prayed to the Divines for justice, but noone answered until Malacath heard her prayers (in the first conception it was Boethiah, but now I see that Malacath is a much better option). She is going to get her revenge with his help.

I am surprised you guys did not speak of the Sworn Oath and the Bloody Code. The Sworn Oath means do not scorn the already scorned. The Bloody Code offers strength to those who seek righteous vengeance. When Trinimac tried to prevent the Chimer from leaving Summer Set, he made the fatal error of arrogance. For all his might, he forgot humility, and thus Boethiah punished him. Malacath embodies a more matured form of honor, and that honor is not complete without humility. It has been said that the battlements of the Ashen Forge extend infinitely, all the way into Aetherius. Malacath is the weakest when arrogant in strength, and the mightiest when vengeance is done in the name of justice. Also, Volendrung can rip through castle walls. At its finest it is a seige weapon.

The Trinimac-Malacath & Boethia myth needs a parallel interpretation in another TES religion. Cause we only have the Aldmer version atm. Other deities have way more interpretations in the series which enriches them.

I'm curious about the orc naming convention of ------ gro -------- . A bit of dialogue from an orc out of the stronghold south of Markarth would suggest it means "of" but I've never really figured it out. I ask because for the longest time I'd name my orc characters after the ancient king Gilgamesh. Rather recently I've adopted a more Tamrielic adaptation but I'm not sure if it fits the naming convention. It's a minor thing but there are people whom are more familiar about this than I (hence why I am inquiring).

Maybe some Orcs existed before the corruption. But then after the corruption more came into existence. Then eventually they mated together. Additionally I respect and accept the Tribal/Stronghold system of the Orcs for the most part.

It's possible that Malacath's connection to Volendrung is not just a claimed Dwemer hammer, but that he actually helped make it. With the Dwemer view on Daedra, there's no reason they wouldn't work with him, and if he was directly involved in helping the Rourkens smith Volendrung, it would make sense that with them gone, he'd be the rightful owner of it.

Wouldn't it be fun if the dwemer were a third party of Mer that bore witness to Trinimacs corruption and had their articles of faith essentially broken because of the fallability of THE spirit of strength. Im not saying thats my headcanon necessarily, but I feel like it would fit in to the long term connections between the dwemer and chimer, and the dwemer and orsimer. The dwemer could have been the ones that saw the actions of the Anticipations and the Chimer's faith in them as distasteful and horrific, felt that they couldn't be protected and led by one so easily defeated, and that their best bet was to find power of their own in a place where they couldn't be snuck up on like Trinimac had allowed himself to be as he projected his faith onto all of them. If they had been part of the Chimeri diaspora or Trinimac's followers or a mix of both even, given their early schism into clans, it would explain their obsession with the doom drum and the basis for their future efforts to harness the Heart of Lorkhan.

Great podcast. I always listen to these in my Monday mornings at work. I want to see the Thalmor use some elder scroll shenanigans to separate Trinimac and Malacath. I then want to see a Thalmor agent mantle Trinimac to wage war on man in TES6 to take hold of Direnni Tower. Yet, that is just my fantasy for a TES6 plotline. I would like to know more about Volundrung and the Dwemer connection. Do you think that these particular Dwemer could reach out to Malacath for aid? Not as worshiping a god but requesting a pact with a powerful entity? The Daedric Princes do not just assist their worshippers they seem to help any and all people if they align with their purpose. That coincides with how the player character in all games seem to be able to make pacts and deals with all princes. Also going back to TES6, you think we will ever be able to get multiple Daedric Artifacts? Like do a intro quest for a Prince and get a minor artifact abd then if we pledge to a pact with them we go on a larger quest to get their best/more iconic artifact?

I don't believe the actual eating part. It's been documented that these princes can open "their jaws to oblivion". "She smiled. And the gates of Oblivion opened between her teeth." - Boethiah's Proving So it makes sense to me this could a half literal AND half metaphorical sense, I'd say Trinimac was "swallowed" into oblivion where he was corrupted into Malacath. As for the part where the Orcs rubbed themselves with ****, these stories always seem to be couched in metaphor I couldn't quite guess what this could be a metaphor with though...

About the name of Malacath: It's interesting to me that Malacath's name in Japanese can be spelt as "ma-ra-ka-su"(マラカス) just like death can be spelt like "de-su" (デス). Because the letters r and l are interchangable in Japanese, either we get 'marakas' or 'malakas'. The latter is Filipino for 'strong'. Interstingly, since Malacath ,being one of the Four Corners of the House of Troubles according to the Dunmer is there to test physical weakness, you could say he also tests the strength of the Dunmer as well. His titles "Daedric Prince of the Bloody Oath" and "Keeper of the Bloody Curse" could be one and the same. In Filipino, the word "sumpa" can either mean a curse or a promise; an oath. And Malek literally means "king" in Arabic. Just my two cents

While listening to the Podcast some thoughts about the metaphysical stuff came to my mind, maybe someone can tell me whether they make sense or not: So assuming that there is truth in the Trinimac = Poop = Malacath story (in whatever variation) it would be interesting to know if it actually took place in the early merethic era or the dawn era when the gods quite literally walked Tamriel. I mean, it is known that the aedric spirits had to invest a big amount of their power to create the mortal realm, whereby they got caught in it right? There was the Ehlnofey war where the gods took sides with men or mer, there was the convention at Adamatia, then the Aedra fell into a comatose state, because of which they cannot act as freely with mortals as the daedra can, the realm stabilized, linear time began. So assuming that when the Chimer made their way to Resdayn, Trinimac, then still being an Aedra, was still quite able to put up a fight, I ask myself how it is even possible for this story to have happened in the Merethic Era, since Trinimac, by then, should have been quite less capable of acting in the way he obviously did. Additionally, how can it be then that he is transformed into a mighty, if shunned, daedric prince with full power and concousness, when, at this point of time, he should be drastically weakened? I thought of three possible reasons for this: 1. All of this story happened in the Dawn Era, when time was not yet linear nor stable. Then, Trinimac could easily have been in a much better shape, also it was more plausible for him to be literally there in an incarnated form. 2. The decline of the Aedra into their unconcous state did not conclude with the end of the Dawn Era, but rather endured into linear time, maybe did not stop at any time at all. So Trinimac, him being one of the most powerful spirits, could have been alive and well while the others lay already at least semi-dormant. In that case it would be far more plausible for him to be consumed, corrupted and well, pooped out while still being very powerful and thereby being, like, "ripped" from his connection to the mortal realm that would have caused him to lose power over time. Therefor, Malacath is still very powerful in modern times, if consumed by bitterness. 3. The reason Boethia could defeat and consume Trinimac at all is that Trinimac has already been very weakend at the point when the two clashed and *tin-foil hat time* Boethia only quite consumed the rest of the power that was left of the once-great warrior. Then, knowing that it was necessary for the new folk of the good deadra to have an opponent that tests their physical strenght, he/she actually infused some of his/her own power into the remains of Trinimac, thereby "reviving" him and giving him back a lot of his former dawn era power, and obviously also disgracing him within that process. Continuing that thought, with former Trinimac being fully oder maybe only partly aware of this, he grew bitter and resentful, knowing fully that he is only a chess figure in Boethia's plan for the PSIJIC Endeavor. Or he does not realize this at all and sees himself as, well, what now-Malacath is percieved to be - dishonored, laughted at, resented. OR maybe Boethia's power infusion twisted his mind to a certain extend, thereby twisting this new gods character and treatment of his followers. Assuming all this it could be that the true Trinimac is really dead, similarly to Lorkahn, and revenge has been taken for the loss of Boethia's maybe-lover. *tin-foil hat off* Wow, that text became longer than expected

Malacath and Mephala being allies never made sense to me since the story of Malacath losing to Boethiah involved Mephala sneaking up and stabbing him in the back. Also you could have a city state under Malacaths beliefs, the Orcs issue was the civil war over beliefs. He also doesn’t want his people to be separated, it’s just stronghold Orcs like being in strongholds. Based on stories and even seeing him make sure revenge is dealt out for his followers, Malacath is one of the few princes that actually cares for them.

Oh so I read a Reddit post in which somebody theorised the story is actually really literal to fit into a simplified mythos. What actually happened was that when Auriel and Trinimac realised Lorkhan had tricked them into giving up power to create Nirn, Trinimac who was the paragon of unity, strength and protection was mantled by Boethiah when he betrayed Lorkhan and tore out his heart, as Boethiah is the daedric prince of plots, sedition, overthrow of lawful power etc, this really was boethiah’s moment. Trinimac was basically an oath breaker and because his aspect had been marred by Boethiah he became malacath. My only issue with that theory is how did Boethiah go back to being Boethiah? Or did Boethiah corruption of Trinimac sort of tear Boethiah and Malacath back into being separate entities?

Since a lot of sources on the dwemer are chimer in origin, and since early elves tended to use orc as a catch all term for non-elf, I think that explains most of the orc-dwemer stuff. Like its an insult to these deep elves who are barbaric in the sense that they don't revere anything the other elves do
