In this God Only Knows guitar lesson, I will show you all the guitar chords to this harmonically sophisticated classic by The Beach Boys.
Brain Wilson really shows us how to use many chord inversions and advanced chords to create moments of tension and release in the harmonic accompaniment of "God Only Knows".
It feels like that beautiful vocal melody is being pulled back and forth between different moods. You really never know what to expect next.
Throughout this lesson, I will use a fingerpicked comping style in order to be recreate the rhythm of the original track. It will stay very consistent throughout so you can concentrate on the chords more easily.
Speaking of those chords, this God Only Knows guitar lesson is a fantastic guitar chord workout. You will probably find many unique chord voicings that you have never played before. These chords can sometimes require a pretty big reach with the frethand. Take your time when getting them under your fingers, it will be well worth it in the end.
All-in-all you simply can't go wrong with The Beach Boys. Their music is not only so well put together and musical, but also incorporates some very advanced harmonic ideas all over the place. Brian Wilson created such beautiful harmonies that I hope you will take the time and study them a bit. I wish pop music these days could be even 5% as brilliant as this amazing song.

Finally, a youtube guitar instructor with enough harmonic knowledge to get the chords right on this song.

I didn’t come here for this, but just to watch his finger movements, but damn if his explanations wouldn’t have helped me immensely starting out. I’m certain if I stuck around longer I’d be learning what I thought I already knew. Good teacher.

Carl Wilson a very underrated guitarist . Not flashy but singing over complex chords in a 12 string is a different skill to licks . Despite the wrecking crew playing the studio versions he played it live . I’ve seen him . Real pro

All I can say is wow, I have never seen such a vivid yet defined transposition of an orchestral piece into a single rhythm-instrument.

For the verse parts, it's worth mentioning that you can play the Bb7b5 after the E/B with this fingering 6-x-x-6-5-4. It just provides a bit of a smoother change in my opinion, rather than jumping down to the first fret. Either way, great tutorial!

my god you have such an impeccable ear for detail, man! glad that you're not teaching the "easiest way possible'"to play the song and opting for teaching the more difficult but accurate way instead. that's the problem with other guitar teachers on youtube. they leave out so many important details. minute as they are, sometimes these details serve as the key ingredients that make a tune distinctive -- so it's really important not to leave them out!

To be honest, I don't think he did. Pet Sounds was a very studio-oriented album, I'm near certain that on the record the guitar part and the vocals were recorded seperately

10:20 I play this chord as 7 on the high E string; 8 on the B string; 8 on the G string; and open on the D string. It saves my fingers from further contortion.

Quick one - The B Minor played up high on frets changes throughout the song? Because you seem to play the A and the 3 high strings first and then the 4 middle strings at the end. Is that correct?

Best pop song ever written. Pet Sounds is a bit overrated for me (kinda boring overall) but this song alone is great enough to consider it an all time best record. Wouldn’t it be nice and Sloop John B are amazing too, but the rest of the album isn’t as memorable. Nothing bad on it, just forgettable tunes.
