Thandie draws you into her conflict. You feel the forces that set the characters in motion long before they collided. You feel they are drawn to each other like gasoline to fire; bound to consume each other until all that remains is cold, empty darkness. What an amazing performance from her and everyone in the movie. When I see her in a movie, I know it is worth watching

« God’s Country » the movie cut me SO close in feeling tone and a few actual situations as a Black woman college teacher in Montana in the movie and in Durango, Colorado for me. And I had less money, fewer accommodations and colleagues who would speak up, without the release of the ending but came close. It’s at the Capri Theater through Monday. 4 and 7 pm.

@@theepowherhouse a Black family on a camping trip at my nearest national park were intentionally trapped in the woods by bigots who downed trees across all the access roads. They were gathering up a fucking posse, accusing the family of being violent BLM antifa terrorists. Because of literally nothing but their skin color. Some local kids on 4x4s hauled the trees away to get them out, but it could have ended very differently. Black, brown, and otherwise marginalized people being terrorized by bigots in rural areas isn't a shoehorned plot point. It's real life for a lot of us.

@@redgeraniumwolf Again spoilers: the main character was a New Orleans cop during Katrina which really fucked her up. She's also actively grieving her just dead mother whom she had been the primary caregiver for. She has been hardened and profoundly saddened by life; she's barely keeping it together, and breaks down on several occasions when she is reminded of the innocent happiness of childhood and the family and community she no longer has. We learn less about the two brothers, but they both work shitty jobs, lost a friend to some sort of bullshit encounter with the local sheriff (who is now on administrative leave), are barely scraping by, and it is heavily implied in a conversation between one of them and the main character that their upbringing was really shitty. While issues of race and gender are subtexts of the story, this is a western in the traditional mold: write the main character to be a late 40s white guy who hung up his lawman spurs and moved to a new town after, say, burying his wife who died in childbirth, and you have a story that is immediately recognizable as a traditional western. The dispute between these characters is over nothing (a parked truck): it's their brokenness that traps them into a cycle of escalation that ends in tragedy.

Not really respect for authority. It’s about respect for your fellow humans. These people trespassing are those who literally think they can just do whatever they want whenever they want and it’s no big deal. That’s the problem. finally saw this last night based on the glowing critic reviews and intriguing-enough look into the northern midwest (it's never specified exactly where but hey there's lots of snowy mountains)..while she does well with the script she's given, it really meanders between its commentary on subtle (and slighly more overt) racism, the fragile nature of being a woman in rural america even given her [minor spoiler] background in law enforcement, inconsistent character decisions with dangling plot threads, suddenly pivoting at one point to her attempt to help a colleague regarding a sexual harassment incident, and then there's the apparently-meaningless demarcation of the progression of events happening one day at a time, which doesn't seem to constructively enhance the narrative in any way. long shots that are held for 20s+ apparently attempting to achieve dramatic effect, but are most often of a character's reaction to something off camera and used far too frequently (what felt like an overly-excessive number of times in the film). repeated (3+ times) vague imagery at the end of each night alluding to her time in new orleans during hurricane katrina. needlessly male gaze-y scenes of her in the shower as a thinly-veiled metaphor, and going through her mother's things in a low-cut dress. could have easily trimmed 20mins+ off of this and had very comparable results. marginally curious about the short story now however, as this seems like they were really stretching the material to reach feature film length. if she hadn't [spoiler] finally gone all john wick at the end, i might've asked for my money back.

Also thandie Newtown has done this film so many times, she's her own genre. Between the Western background in winter and her being an attractive black woman over the age of 40, I'm sure those HD shots are worth every penny.

I absolutely agree that it’s racist (e.g.) to stereotype black people, and misogynist to stereotype woman, but your specific stereotype absolutely changed the game. There’s something about it so profoundly different from other stereotypes! You should write a memoir titled “The Societal Pontifications of Alice Crowder. With a mind as strong as yours, you’d sell *at least* eight or nine copies, to those rare few looking for something a bit more firm than toilet paper.

@@Alyssthecrow Ohhhh, that’s very confusing, Alice. Because you made it sound like you knew “All”, “Most,” or even a statistically meaningful “Some.” You’re saying that you just “know of” these people; in essence, you know these kinds of people exist. That’s great. I wouldn’t at all be surprised if they do. But then took your entirely insignificant anecdote about some people in real life who seem (to you) to be the caricature you’re seeing in this trailer, and then you applied to it ALL of rural America. Do you not appreciate the irony of you clearly perpetuating “stereotyping rural Americans” while at the same time conceding that you have no scientific/statistical grounds or expertise of opinion to be able to make the claim you’re making? This is so dumb that I’m, like, awestruck. “DERR…Rural Stereotypes are true because…DERPP…I once met 8 people out of a…BAHHHH…population of 45+ million people…and…TRUE.” That’s what I hear ^^.

Precisely. It's a worn out trope that still hasn't had the big pay off all of these psychotic film makers are hoping for. It's disgusting. Just think of all of the people of color who are in office that trash white men for being terribly evil and racist and yet almost all of them are dating or married to white men. This crap needs to stop. From Dark Brandon spewing his hate for half the country before a bloodred backdrop to psychopaths shooting white people in Memphis or running them over at a Christmas parade. Right. It swings both ways and movies like this don't lead to any sort of common ground or cohesion. It's evil and it's simply to make money and earn clout in Hollywood or at Cannes. They can shove their thumbs up their asses and make like airplanes, damned bigots.
